RE: Southern's band
Can we get over ourselves? Some folks need to get out and see the world lol. Sorry you don't understand their culture, but the two bands just have very different styles.

Just because they're in our house, doesn't mean they have to change who they are (although I can argue that in fact, THEY DID.) Anyone who follows HBCUs knows that Southern's band was MUCH more "respectful" than usual. They played MUCH less than typical, and their fans were upset about that. Many traveled to see the band, and didn't get to hear as much as they hoped. That was due to 1) they acknowledged they weren't playing Alcorn State or TSU and needed to make adjustments and 2) hard to play during "the appropriate time" when during every time out we are holding red-zone races on crutches and car races on the jumbotron. Quite frankly, I would much rather listen to any band instead of our silly, overused promotional nonsense (aside from honoring service members, of course.) I didn't notice them playing during a play from scrimmage unless I missed something. If you're upset that an FCS school's band (whose football team we whooped) played during a touch back, you're probably the kind of fan that doesn't like when we boo the refs or when we tell Ole Miss where they can go...

To those critiquing and criticizing their band and comparing it to the MSOTS-- The Human Jukebox will be in this year's Rose Parade. They have played at Super Bowls, Macy's Parades, and Presidential Inaugurations. They never miss Mardi Gras. I'll leave it at that. Some schools are known for things-- for us it's basketball (and now football) and for SU it's The Human Jukebox. I love my school, I love the Tigers, and I think the MSOTS is GREAT... but comparing these two bands is not a discussion we want to have. Just give it a rest.

RE: Southern's band
Southern's band is Power 5 and our band FCS. You maybe confusing rude with them just being that better than us. Just like people used to be upset with the local SEC schools and call them rude for running up the score on us. Southern's band ran up the score on our band. Memphis should definitely hire a HBCU band director.

The game was heavily scripted.. right down to which band was supposed to be playing during time outs. So if anyone was uncouth is was the Tigers band. because they played even when is was not their turn to play. I have a copy of the house marking script and so did each schools band directors. So why would you pay for a band to come all the way up here and then not even let them PLAY! Not only that, they gave them only 4 mins for halftime when there was plenty of time left to give them at least another 1min and a half.

Every time Southerns band tried to play the House staff jumped on the headsets and told them not too. So of course they were frustrated..

Even when is was Southern's turn to play the tigers band still jumped on the loudspeakers and played...

Old Miss band played damn near the whole game and no one ran in here saying they were uncouth or go back to where they came from.

Their band was great. And they were rude as hell. Heard damn near everybody sitting around my seats saying the same thing.. Got worse in the 4th quarter. It was atrocious and pretty obvious to everyone.

I'm sure just showing up was atrocious and rude to you.

A ridiculous statement not even worthy of arguing.

What that has to do with the other points being made here I have no idea

Playing during plays I believe is against the rules, and playing loudly during our home game spirit squad celebration was rude, show us some respect too, like we did for them during their halftime show

Them being good, like many other bands, is beside the point in this case

HBCU bands come to battle. That's a part of the HBCU Gameday experience. There was no disrespect meant by The Juke.

The band shouldn’t play after the offense breaks the huddle and lines up.
I couldn’t care less if they try and drowned out a band but if they’re trying to create false start penalties or delay of game penalties then its over the line.

Nothing says #TwoAmericas quite like this statement. That rule is followed loosely to say the least at HBCU games. The bands are a part of the HBCU experience. Because it may be different from what you're accustomed to doesn't make it rude.

If there were times that the band shouldn't play then schools will usually send the band director an itinerary during the week just like Memphis did to notify Southern that they'd only have 4 minutes and 15 seconds for half time.

You are barking up trees where YOU don’t understand who you are barking at or even considering that they understand the bigger picture but even with that bigger picture found some things untoward

There are a LOT of traditions that are nonetheless rude.

Rebel flag waving. You like that?
Calling people boy or N word. You okay with that?
Just good old times and just southern tradition will scream the defenders

Bottom line, EVEN IF it is a tradition among HBCU bands to play during plays and to play over the home team band while their spirit squads are doing their signature show and even if that same home team band and home team fans showed tremendous respect for the road team band

It is not right

I am a pretty dam progressive person, but such intractability like you are showing hurts legitimate causes

Don’t defend doing something rude based on tradition unless you are prepared to defend it all

In THIS case, it was wrong

Bands are part of a lot of college traditions, not just HBCUs.

Your idea that anyone is interpreting different as rude is way off base and condescending in a manner that perhaps you don’t understand based on your different experience

I am done with band gate. An overwhelming shout out hedged with a mild comment is met with this unwavering asinine nonsense

We DO understand. YOU don’t.

Done

The fact that you THINK calling someone then N-word is remotely close to a band playing tells me EVERYTHING that I need to know about you. Just the fact of THATS the example that you chose to think of says a LOT about you.

RE: Southern's band
One of my absolutely favorite MSOS moments was rude as HELL

Arkansas State, 2013. Late in the game, we are up big.

Their poor little band plays Iron Man. As soon as they finish, we play a superior version of Iron Man, a song we didn't play much at all at the time, and haven't played since to my knowledge.

Their band didn't play again that day.

That is the Way of the World. You either get it or you don't, I guess.

No ref is going to flag that. Ever watched a Southern Cal game?

One of my favorite Tiger memories of recent times.

RE: " It Ain't Over" That was clever at the time given they had just run the fumble back to get back to 10. Couldn't find yesterday's video of it but here is the performance in the past.

Just think of all the handwringing here if they have dropped some Lil Wayne yesterday:

Great band.

Now that's a band!

Here what they look like at halftime when actually given enough time to perform. At Georgia 2015. Note the halftime score spell out given they don't know what the score will be in advance. That was cut out yesterday for the crutch race/ shopping cart race or drum-cam I guess?????

RE: Southern's band
I was impressed with the power of Southern's (ALMOST ALL BRASS) band, but don't forget that half of the MSOS are flutes, clarinets, and saxophones.....not the most musically intimidating instruments.

I'm glad they came, but was one of those that were disappointed with them playing over the end of 3rd quarter fight song, and during a series of plays.

Everyone was super pissed about the truck horn.....but cool with a 200+ all horn band blaring along?

For those that want a more HBC feel to gameday, I'm with you...I love the volume, and aggressiveness....but the sacrifice is limiting musical education for woodwind players that'd like to participate and gain experience should they become band directors, as well as the types of music you can play. Sure, some people don't think a football game is the right place for a music appreciation class, but I personally think it adds a lot and is more impressive than the more popular "park and blow" concept.

Old Miss band played damn near the whole game and no one ran in here saying they were uncouth or go back to where they came from.

When they played "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," an absolutely WONDERFUL song that's based on my favorite EWF song ("That's the Way of the World), and they played it all drive, and we scored, that was just beautiful.

Let's address that.

Address it being hot as hell and the game not in question? That's tough to do.
