RE: Southern's band
Perhaps none of you had a chance to experience a typical HBCU band . I challenge any of you to attend the SHC at the Liberty Bowl and actually watch the halftime show. To be honest, I have seen more uncouth behavior from fans at both UofM football games and basketball games. Sitting court side at basketball games and hearing some of the language and rhetoric used by some of the fans is very embarrassing and disheartening.Their band was an experience. I enjoyed it. We should hire their band director.

Forget what I said earlier about MTSU. You know what's REALLY disrespectful?

When we played at Ole Miss in 2014 and they strictly forbade us to let our band play - they said we could bring the MSOS, but they couldn't have their instruments.

That is disrespect. Music is not.

Ole Miss now plays loud piped-in music every-time an opposing band starts to play its fight song. They also mic their band, so it drowns out opposing bands and they separate the opposing band from the fan section.

RE: Southern's band
I get all of that

The TAG advertisement caused fall starts last week

And football teams come to compete and follow the rules or get flagged

When their band played quick notes during play calls and played loudly during plays it was wrong, whether that is HBCU tradition or not

As was specifically when they played over the quarter break Memphis spirit squad

Would we be defending their competitive band if they played loudly during the national anthem or the military promotion?

It seems like everyone thought they were very talented and have their own traditions, and still think the above were out of line, and are expressing that pretty tamely in a message board thread, after universally shunning our band at halftime to watch their performance. Again, we get it.

The band shouldn’t play after the offense breaks the huddle and lines up.
I couldn’t care less if they try and drowned out a band but if they’re trying to create false start penalties or delay of game penalties then its over the line.

RE: Southern's band
Wow it's some truly ignorant and racist things said in this thread, uncouth? go back where you came from? But hey in this day and age i would not expect anything less.

The game was heavily scripted.. right down to which band was supposed to be playing during time outs. So if anyone was uncouth is was the Tigers band. because they played even when is was not their turn to play. I have a copy of the house marking script and so did each schools band directors. So why would you pay for a band to come all the way up here and then not even let them PLAY! Not only that, they gave them only 4 mins for halftime when there was plenty of time left to give them at least another 1min and a half.

Every time Southerns band tried to play the House staff jumped on the headsets and told them not too. So of course they were frustrated..

Even when is was Southern's turn to play the tigers band still jumped on the loudspeakers and played...

Old Miss band played damn near the whole game and no one ran in here saying they were uncouth or go back to where they came from.

Nothing says #TwoAmericas quite like this statement. That rule is followed loosely to say the least at HBCU games. The bands are a part of the HBCU experience. Because it may be different from what you're accustomed to doesn't make it rude.

If there were times that the band shouldn't play then schools will usually send the band director an itinerary during the week just like Memphis did to notify Southern that they'd only have 4 minutes and 15 seconds for half time.

I don’t care about band decorum and who plays when but I don’t think a band should intentionally inject themselves into a game... just like I do not want to see schools pipe in noise while teams are in the set position to try and cause penalties. Perhaps that’s a black/white issue, but I think its more of a good sportsmanship issue.

No ref is going to flag that. Ever watched a Southern Cal game?

RE: " It Ain't Over" That was clever at the time given they had just run the fumble back to get back to 10. Couldn't find yesterday's video of it but here is the performance in the past.

You are barking up trees where YOU don’t understand who you are barking at or even considering that they understand the bigger picture but even with that bigger picture found some things untoward

There are a LOT of traditions that are nonetheless rude.

Rebel flag waving. You like that?
Calling people boy or N word. You okay with that?
Just good old times and just southern tradition will scream the defenders

Bottom line, EVEN IF it is a tradition among HBCU bands to play during plays and to play over the home team band while their spirit squads are doing their signature show and even if that same home team band and home team fans showed tremendous respect for the road team band

It is not right

I am a pretty dam progressive person, but such intractability like you are showing hurts legitimate causes

Don’t defend doing something rude based on tradition unless you are prepared to defend it all

In THIS case, it was wrong

Bands are part of a lot of college traditions, not just HBCUs.

Your idea that anyone is interpreting different as rude is way off base and condescending in a manner that perhaps you don’t understand based on your different experience

I am done with band gate. An overwhelming shout out hedged with a mild comment is met with this unwavering asinine nonsense

We DO understand. YOU don’t.

Done
