Exactly. And the institutional reputation and fit of potential members is of huge importance to the presidents who actually vote on realignment decisions--while fans are typically far more focused on the athletic performance aspects of realignment. Not saying athletic performance doesnt matter to the presidents---but institutional fit is just as important to the presidents---perhaps even more so.

It’s not what you want. It’s what ESPN wants. The AAC will add what ESPN tells them to add. Just ask the ACC.
They will, but does ESPN want to go from paying for every bit of Buffalo's content at the MAC price to paying the AAC price for it? Buffalo probably makes as much if not the most sense of any likely yes candidates, except for the fact that ESPN already owns 100% of their content for very little. What does ESPN gain by changing the patches on their jersey and paying multiple millions more a year to do it? Everyone keeps taking the statement of "there's a very short list of teams the AAC will add" as saying that's fully the AAC's decision. What I suspect is the actual truth is there's a very short list of teams that ESPN feel is worth the AAC adding.
Conferences have made moves like this in the past, and ESPN has approved despite the monetary point you mentioned.
Not saying that Buffalo is "the one", but you could have just as easily said the following a few years ago:
"They will, but does ESPN want to go from paying for every bit of Buffalo's Louisville's content at the MAC AAC price to paying the AAC ACC price for it? Buffalo Louisville probably makes as much if not the most sense of any likely yes candidates, except for the fact that ESPN already owns 100% of their content for very little. What does ESPN gain by changing the patches on their jersey and paying multiple millions more a year to do it?"

The success of its men’s and women’s basketball teams has elevated its brand, and the football program had its most successful season in 2018.
When asked hypothetically if UB would be a candidate for the AAC, Aresco declined to address the question directly.
“Buffalo is a great school that’s achieved great things in football and basketball, and they’ve produced some great athletic directors in Warde Manuel, Danny White and Mark Alnutt,” Aresco told the News last week. “But the last thing I want to do is put a bullseye on Buffalo and upset (MAC commissioner) Jon Steinbrecher.”

That’s not who I’d expect, but they do fit the academic profile—-which is more important to the decision makers than many fans think.
Buffalo doesn't really fit the AAC academic profile. They are AAU, and they are US News ranked #89, which puts them up there far above most AAC schools, with SMU and Tulane.
But they are similar in profile to UConn - a good academic school, big school, in the broader New York area.
That said, IMO it would be a mistake to add Buffalo. Their success in football and basketball is too one-shot, could be ephemeral.

I've thought if Buffalo were to go the MAC could take another bite out of the Midwest somewhere like Illinois St.
Weaken "The Valley" even more.
MAC loses a team and they try to peel off WKU or Marshall. If that doesn't work, they go for a football only UConn, UMass or Liberty. They don't move into FBS and ISU can't afford it now or they would have already moved up.

Marshall will not join the MAC unless we got a waiver to not play mid week games at home. We are not going to kill our fan base for that.

Buffalo makes no sense. Conference USA and Sunbelt is the new blue print and they will have to pick from there. A travel partner between UC and ECU makes sense otherwise BYU West and Navy East for a slam dunk.

RE: Aresco discusses Buffalo to the AAC
The AAC's path is best divined by looking at what these same schools did in the CUSA, as 9 of the 11 were in CUSA, mostly at the same time. Army was in the CUSA. They go after them first. They would go after Air Force next.
While NIU or Buffalo are possibilities, they had chances and passed on those schools for CUSA. They picked Southern Miss, UAB, Rice, UTEP and Marshall. With the temporary dropping of football, UAB is not a possibility. UTEP is too weak in football and too far west. That leaves Southern Miss, Rice and Marshall. While all have drawbacks, so does the rest of the G5 and none of the others have been picked by these schools to join them before.

I still think it’s going to be a MWC team and we’re going to be told “tough nuts, you’re going to the East”.
Temple
Cincinnati
Navy
ECU
USF
UCF
is what literally every team in the East division wants to happen.

Absolutely not. If the MAC ever wants to improve and elevate itself, it needs to filter out some of those schools in the Ohio region. Too many bottom feeder Kent states and EMUs in the conference. I think the MAC should be targeting JMU, Marshall, WKU, MTSU- schools that hold their own, we have enough cellar dwellers in football.

By fit—I mean a top national 200 USNWR a school that is R1. Some of the schools being mentioned aren’t even USNWR “national” schools—-much less ranked in the top 200. Obviously, Buffalo’s academics more than clear that hurdle and all AAC presidents would find the idea of being associated with such a highly respected AAU school appealing.

RE: Aresco discusses Buffalo to the AAC
UB would be a slam dunk if the Bills left town. Unfortunately, the current UB program has little brand outside Erie County. If they have a great season the locals will watch them on TV otherwise they are ignored. Their stadium is horrible. Built for the Pan-Am games? and has a track around it. Buffalo is a very underrated destination but the stadium is devoid of atmosphere.

Memphis can be easily pushed to the east and has an old rival in Cincy sitting there. I don't think any of the front range schools split off from the other 2 and leave the MWC for the AAC. After that everyone else in the MWC is just to far away.

I don't necessarily think that, just because UConn stood to have the most games go to plus of all conference members, that they would represent the most potential subscriptions to plus.
I would think that the teams with the most draw of total eyeballs would get the most subscriptions, unless they have zero games in zero sports on plus, which is unlikely.
