It's a different world out there now. What would you say to Indiana St. fans whining that their coach should be out there getting the next Larry Bird?
It may be a different world now, but top 50 recruiting classes aren't an unreasonable expectation for a school with Cincinnati's history. Mick fooled us into believing it's not possible, but it is. If Rhode Island, Harvard, and Western Kentucky can do it, so can we.

This isn't Indiana State or Army, and Mick wasn't just outrecruited by Yates but also by Huggins. Cincinnati has always been a more attractive destination for basketball recruits than Oxford, Mississippi, Iowa City, Columbia, SC, etc. I wish Mick the best, but I'm very glad his excuses and defeatist attitude are gone.

I can't wait until Mick underwhelms with his recruiting at UCLA and he spouts off some nonsense about not having the resources Sean Miller has at Arizona or something of that nature. It would be right in line with his long history of making excuses.

Oh yeah. I remember looking at old Van Coleman's when I was a kid that my old man had from when we were recruiting Hersey Hawkins and Vinny Del Negro lol.
P.S. Good God, have we really slipped to the point where people compare us to Indiana State and Army? How long was I off this board???

Oh my gosh. If your reading comprehension isn't any better than that, then maybe you should just stay off.
What I was trying to say is that we're in a different situation now than we were way back when in the 80's when Tony Yates was this recruiting dynamo... though I don't remember it that way.
Indiana St. got a guy like Larry Bird in the 70's. That isn't going to happen again.
Army dominated football in the 40's. That aint ever happening again either.
CAN we get a top 50 recruit class? Yes. But in case you haven't noticed, we're not in the cool kids club anymore. Zion Williamson aint coming to UC.
For the most part, we've got to find the guys that the Dukes and Kentuckys of the world have overlooked. More than likely, they're not going to be highly rated.
But to expect top classes every year? Forget it.

RE: Brooks
The class with Banks, Robinson, Starks and Givens was Top 10. Not so sure it was the program that led to the dropoff as much as the guy doing the recruiting. Prior coaches could recruit Top 50 classes to the Metro, Great Midwest, and Conference USA. I guess time will be the judge.

Why does this lame trope keep getting repeated. Whoever said we expect to be getting Zion Williamson?

Wasn’t too long ago arguably the current best player in the NBA went to Davidson.
Ja Morant will be a Lottery Pick and went to Murray State.
We don’t necessarily need Zion Williamson to make Final Four runs and National Championships. We can get better talent that is ready to contribute sooner than what we’ve seen from a lot of our recent recruits which took several years before seeing the court in most cases.

Not a surprise, I think a lot of fans undervalue just how good Brooks is and can be next year. Most of those teams don't look any better then UC though- if his goal is to make a name for himself and make the NCAA tournament. But Ohio State and NC State could be enticing, especially Ohio State.

Yes they did. We were in on the number one recruit till the end in 1987 (Marcus Liberty))

Doesn't matter how good he thinks he can be next year. He's looking at two years from now when he's actually eligible.
Top 25 this coming year... Or who knows what the following year.

I only see one of those close to Philly, and the one would lower his profile.
The one thing that no one has brought up is the possibility that Brooks was considering transferring even if Cronin stayed. His twitter was/is silent on the matter.

Yes they did. We were in on the number one recruit till the end in 1987 (Marcus Liberty))
He played for Sonny Cox who was from Cincinnati at King High School with future Bearcat Levertis Robinson
"Willowy and strong with a lightning-quick first step, Liberty and center Levertis Robinson led Cox to his first public-league championship.
"Man, we were awesome," says Cox. "I also had Reginald King, a great guard. They just destroyed other teams. They could run like deer; they could play above the rim. They were the most unselfish team I've ever had. Each one of them was good, so the other team couldn't key in on one guy, not even Marcus. And Levertis--Levertis had a God-given ability. He could jump to the moon. He looked like he was stuck up there. He'd jump up, and everyone else would be coming down, and he would still be in the air waving his arms, saying, 'Give me the ball.' We went 32 and 1. We lost our only game in a tournament in Rockford. The refs fouled the whole team out. We were jobbed."

Levertis was also a class act. He was the silent type and the unselfishness extended to his time as a Bearcat. One of my all time favorites.
