I'm wondering if this thread set a record for the longest thread ever about a player who averaged 8 points a game? You'd think they lost an All American. I agree, he's gone (and so is Mick).....time to move on.
I had him ranked the 5th most important player to return for next year based on the roster.
1. Cumberland
Huge gap.
2. Scott
Small gap
3. Kieth Williams
4. Logan Johnson
5. Brooks.
Then everyone else is roughly equal.
Cats actually have some front court depth or they can play a style to doesn't require a traditional 6-11 big as well.
I don't see much front-court depth. Interested to hear your thinking along those lines.
I expect Scott to have a nice year. I don't see how he could play the 5 for 30 minutes though. It will be an interesting year if he does.
Nsoseme is a good rebounder and decent defender, but he's extremely limited on offense. Like, you really can't pass him the ball.
Diarra is talented but raw. Although he might stand to improve the most under Brannen. Hard to see 20 minutes a game out of him though.
No idea about Prince Gillum but I don't expect much from a low-ranked redshirt freshman.
His reasoning is probably the new act like anyone who leaves sucked anyway, that is going around.
Seriously, put a Sophomore who barely was able to touch the floor last year over arguably our second best player last year. As you point out, with Brooks leaving we lack as much or more (if Cumberland returns and plays PG) at Center then we do at PG. Diarra is still raw and was frequently lost when on the court last year, Nsoseme couldn't do anything on offense (hopefully due to injuries and he will improve). Even if Scott plays the 5, who plays the 4? Gillam/Hardnett might be just as raw or even more so then Diarra/Nsoseme.
Our best players last year were.
1. Cumberland
gap
2. Brooks
3. Scott
small gap
4. JJ
5. Williams
6. Broome
Our most important players next year would have been.
1. Cumberland
small gap
2. Brooks
3. Scott
small gap
4. Williams
small gap
5. whoever can play at least average at SG or PG (Johnson/Moore/Hardnett/some new guy)
Gillam was low rated, but his low rating is a mirage. He was low rated because he unexpectedly reclassified, who knows how high he'd be rated if he has stayed in HS another year. We can't really know how good he will be until he gets on the court. But the fact that he reclassified then redshirted is no reason to dismiss him.
Are you kidding? Brooks was very inconsistent, plays a position where UC has three other options to replace him. There is not another PG on the roster besides Logan Johnson and only four total guard of Cumberland returns. There is way more value in the guard and wing spots today than in traditional bigs.
Once again next year comes down to Cumberland. The roster was so poorly constructed for defections to the NBA. Mick didnt have the next stud guy after Cumberland unless you buy Williams or Johnson as pro guys.
This was never going to be a top 15 team if everyone came back unless there were serious additions made.

had a booster friend tell me that Prince was one of the best players in practices. Of course, Mick and Terry Nelson always said Trevor Moore was a SUPERSTAR SHOOTER in practice. Who knows?
I'm with you; always wary of those predictions from practices but in this case let's hope it's true. Perhaps he provides some much needed depth in the year of the coaching transition.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and you have rated Brooks as our second best player many times. My thoughts are certainly we had a great player in Cumberland but after that we had a number of players in any given game who performed the best for us. Just don't think his stats outshined the others. His strength was blocks but look at scoring averages, minutes played, assists , big shots made in critical situations and the the argument of the best after Jarron is debatable.
Brooks improved and had a very nice season. Would loved for him to stay. But it is also debatable how well he would fit in Brannen's style of offense. A few people on this board were claiming he might be the best center in college basketball his senior year; I just don't see that possibility.

RE: Brooks
Jarron is our most important player. After that it's a matter of what you value. I'd have Brooks 4th or 5th among guys who may have come back, but when he's on the floor I could see him as high as second. Brook committed 5.7 fouls per 40 minutes. There wasn't another major contributor on the team that committed more than 3.7 fouls per 40. His inability to stay on the floor to me, moved him below some of the other guys in value, but we're clearly losing an asset.

Logan Johnson is completely unproven, he couldn't make it off the bench in some games - very comparable to Diarra/Nsoseme . Until he actually does anything is crazy to say he's more important than one of our better starters. As long as Cumberland returns, Cumberland can run PG and Logan will be maxing out at 20 mins.

Brooks strength was defense, blocked shots, offensive rebounding and excellent chemistry with Cumberland on the pick-and-roll. Last year he had a higher offensive rating then Kyle Washington's senior season (both overall and in conference) and a higher offensive rebound percentage then Gary Clark's senior season (and both overall and in conference play). His weaknesses were finishing around the rim (though he improved a lot at that throughout the year) and getting into foul trouble (which just showed how much we missed him when he was out). If Brannen couldn't figure out how to fit him in his offense, then there's a problem.
I don't think anyone said he could be the best center in basketball next year, but I did say he could be the best center in the AAC and one of the top in the NCAA in offensive rebound percentage (his conference play offensive rebound percentage was already one of the best in the NCAA last year).

RE: Brooks
It would have been nice to have had Brooks back but he left. Next years success is much more dependent on whether Cumberland returns and how much improvement we see from the rest of the returning players. Keep in mind there is going to be a different system in place and CJB isn't going to determine playing time like Mick did. Some of these guys may well flourish in a new system and we are going to get some indication of how well CJB can coach guys up.

John Jacobs was the best player in practice everyday in '92 as well...

Just for the hell of it,,, I looked up the seating capacity from UM's basketball arena,, 7900.. Looked at the attendance for 6 ACC home games last year, ranged from 6300, 6900.

I ATTENDED a lot UC's practices in those days and I disagree about John Jacobs. He struggled with his weight and Bob Huggins was brutal on John. HE sure wasn't a good practice player.

Yeah, Brannen had a whole 24 hours from Brooks and his guardian to bring him up to speed with his new NBA-style offense before they started talking about transferring.
Oh, wait... I remember now... He transferred for academic reasons.

RE: Brooks
I went at least once or twice a week myself. The point was things people say about redshirts is often exaggerated. Huggs wasn't really that hard on Jacobs though his redshirt season. He would often speak highly of him when asked on his coach's show. You're right though, saw him lay into Jacobs legendarily hard a few times.
I miss those days of going to practices. I remember sitting in the Armory Fieldhouse watching Yates teams practice with my stepdad. I was 13 Huggins first season. So many memories of those practices. So many things I can't repeat here lol. He didn't hold back with a minor in attendance, and I loved every second of it. Loved watching those practices. Loved the closeness to the players. Tarrance Gibson took me in the locker room a couple times. Would have went everyday if my stepdad would have taken me. Then sometime down the road some moron posted like a full practice scouting report online and they closed practices. I remember going up to practice the first time after that and a team manager stopped us, but Huggins saw and said we were alright and let us in. After that we got stopped once or twice without getting in and quit going.
I wouldn't be able to go as often anymore, but I'd love to check out a couple Brannen practices. I assume they're probably still closed to the public though.

I think that fan that posted Huggin's UC practice routines on the internet passed away long ago. What a horrible mistake that was. It hurt lots of us that went to the practices occassionally. I didn't blame coaches for closed practices after that. Internet and social media makes it too easy for someone to screw things up.

Yeah, we've had a few guys over the years get a lot of hype based upon practice reports while sitting out, but I don't recall Jacobs being one of them either.

Looks like he earns solid grades, which is no surprise given how intelligent he comes across in interviews. Happy for him if he is doing this for academic reasons. In retrospect, I really wish we would have redshirted him. Maybe then he would have stayed to receive his graduate degree at UC, and we would be looking at two more years of Brooks improving upon what was already a really good 2018-19 season. Regardless, I wish him well.

I would imagine he's more interested in things like restorative justice and working with troubled youth than being a big guy with a badge and a bad attitude. He doesn't strike me as someone with a huge ego.

Yeah, most people in Criminal Justice at UC aren't in it for Policing, they're in it for Policy and Corrections. Oddly enough, Cincinnati is a Top 10 Criminal Justice program in the country...
