RE: Brannen's staff
Hicks and Bobbitt was running mouths saying AK was perfect fit. I asked them why and he didn't make them go class and also quit on recruiting. Still waiting on them to reply and this was Sunday...

RE: Brannen's staff
I checked out Brannen's staff at NKU. I didn't realize that he had Chris Shumate as an assistant. He played for Cronin at Murray and was on his staff here at UC for a little. Looks like the other guys worked with Brannen at Alabama. Do we expect him to bring these guys over or get most new hires?

Why? Is that the only qualification? NBA guys?

Look on top teams in country bench or on teams where they pull off top 75 kid out of no where. It's because of a nba connection. I don't need a bench full of X and O type coaches. Players go places where they relate to coach. Mick came from Woodward with a (*5) so he always related to inner city kids.

Really glad to hear that his staff is actually getting a little bump over Mick's. We made a nice chunk-o-change from Mick's buyout over Brennan's buyout (~ $2M methinks) on top of the savings in salary ($700K per year iirc not including the raise Mick was likely to get). But he's going to need a good staff and I'm glad we seem to be giving him the resources to adequately pay for one. I'd love to see him add a Bearcat like NVE but either way, I hope he makes the right calls on who he picks.

RE: Brannen's staff
The most reasonable guess I have heard so far was with an on-the-air interview with (I think) Chad Brendel. If I have this wrong, I am sure someone can correct me. There have been a lot of interviews I have heard recently.

The guess was essentially that Brannen would bring 1 NKU assistant with him (most likely Shumate). The rest of the staff might be made up from people that are "branches from the Billy Donovan tree, if you can figure out who they might be".

Not exactly specific - but again, seems like a reasonable guess.

I don't really see it as mattering one way or another if he's still around. We need guys with connections who can recruit.

Bingo

And I hope Brannen has a grad transfer up his sleeve too.

Same here. We still have some holes to fill on this roster.

We have 2 scholarships this year and 3 next year so I hope we use this year’s scholarships. I think Transfers are most likely considering we won’t have as much time to develop a relationship with HS recruits. Of course that could change depending on who he adds to his staff, but I’m not expecting anymore big HS recruits this year.

Can’t imagine James has a degree considering he stopped going to class.

I think he will be back on campus starting this summer to finish his degree. So he will be here regardless.
Flight or Dermarr?

When can people forgive flight and JM? And are we positive they just bailed on the team? I heard it but did we ever have proof?

Hey James! How about you spend more - errr!!! some - time being a father to your kids!

The guy is garbage.

Honestly that whole 06 team can go away as far as I'm concerned. Hick's comments were ridiculous. Meeker wanting AK to get this job despite the fire that AK was pouring gas on the way out the door. I understand he was good to Meeker personally but that guy burned the bridge here permanently.
I was following the cats during AK’s time.

He Wanted the job. It was a tryout almost . I never thought he tanked. Are you guys sure he wasn’t recruiting? He probably was but he couldn’t sign anybody because he was a lame duck.

He would be a fool to just show loyalty to Bob and kill his future.

I have no issue without recruiting. Interim coaches can't really recruit anyway. The issue is with the lack of accountability for the players which ended up with two guys suspended for the last game and severe damage having been done to our APR.

That time coaches normally invest in recruiting could have been spent keeping players in line.

People wanted to bring back the band with AK, James White? No thanks. I don't think people realize how decimated the program was as a result.

All I know is that that was a fun team, and d@amn good too, until Kirkland went down. Even drafted Barwin into the mix.

It certainly was. I was willing to give Mick time, after that. I thought he did an amazing job putting it all back together. The problem was he plateaued. I think UC basketball has a higher ceiling than what Mick reached. I could be wrong, but I’m willing to take that gamble. That’s the problem with Mick. He always did just enough. That can sometimes be worse than bad, because they stick around longer. A bad coach is in and out. A good not great coach is around for years. Again, no Mick hate here. I trust the guy making the hire, so I’m willing to gamble.

Mick definitely had limitations and it seemed like his stubbornness was a big asset at times, and a downfall at times. Like not attacking the press to give ourselves easy baskets. Instead, it’s like he was stuck in his ways and wanted to play not to lose and slow it down and try to hold onto the lead.

A lot of times coaching changes don't work out, whether you are going with an established high-major guy, or an up-and-comer. With that understanding, I'm still really looking forward to trying something new, and finding that I'm anticipating next year more than I have in a very long time.
