Met/worked with most of the old school(80's-90's)bodybuilding names. Have never met Arnold, but have run into Lou
several times.

Awesome! I only competed naturally we took a lie detector test. I worked at GNC through college. I was only fortunate enough to meet Ronnie Coleman at Metroflex Gym and the Ronnie Classic in 2001. I was doing Chest and Biceps...while Ronnie was doing Legs pumping out 405lb Front Squats like a warmup. Markus Rhuhl showed up and seemed like "this place is a complete dump" lol. You do leave Metroflex looking like you've been in a Bodyshop.

so what kind of program do you do now?

hyper
heavy
cardio stuff
powerlifter/max stuff

Nobody agrees with this training philosophy, but I've always subscribed to the Mike Mentzer/ Dorian Yates HIT training Philosophy because it's the most logical. That is, maximum intensity, minimal volume to attain maximum muscle size and strength for anaerobic exercise. Doing volumes of sets is aerobic exercise based on tradition unfounded in Sports Science.

As Mentzer described it, it only took 1 sperm to create a human life. As Dorian Yates described it, it only takes one hard whack to drive a nail through a board
Beating it to death only does more harm than good, if your stated objective is maximum muscle mass and strength.

Do 1,000 sets for whatever reason if your objective is aerobic exercise.

Obviously, you have to hold back on intensity to perform additional sets and have a real anaerobic workout. Are you competing in a Triathlon or in a Bodybuilding/Powerlifting Competition?

Split my body parts over a week. Roughly 85-93% 1RM 8-3 reps x 4-5 sets/exercise 30-60 sec between sets 4-5 exercises 18-24 total sets less than 40 minutes Cardio :15 min warm up, 20 min
warm down Keep the body adapting.

RE: Arnold Shwarzenneger vs. Lou Ferrigno. They built the foundation.
Competing. Hell no. Im just a 47 year old guy who doesnt want to be a fat terrible 47year old guy.

I have a good meathead trainer who trains me and writes programs.

I started with strong lifts 5 X 5. Sometimes some Powerlifting/Max type stuff. Sometimes we steal programs from elitefts. Sometimes he writes a hyper program. Hes a powerlifter and Im a guy with a fragile ego so sometimes I try to push myself to do more weight rather than volume. I feel the last couple of year I would set my goals around a rep weight 5X5 or a max which is kind of stupid at my age. I get on a program I stick with it for 6 weeks then life happens or the waves get good and I just go back to doing a heavy push, a hyper chest/arms day and a leg/pull day.

I hurt my back a few weeks ago and it was a kindof a wake up call to train differently For whatever reason I have a hard time not straining my spine on DL. I also got into a bad habit of not keeping my butt on the bench and arching to pin my shoulders back to push more weight.

Im 195 12-13% Body Fat. Id like to lean down to 10% but I aint doing bro science diet. That just aint me.

Good talk.

You gotta' do what YOU gotta' do. Sports Science isn't Rocket Science. Training/Diet is all revolved around Seasonality, if any, of your objective. Traditionally, a competitive Bodybuilder designates about 12 weeks of dieting/cardio inclusion to prepare for competition. After competition, it's all hands on deck to build muscle mass, and healthy bodyfat levels return in the pursuit of adding additional muscle mass. Powerlifters just say screw
that we just want to gain strength 24/7, lol. Doesn't mean anyone can't apply the same principles if say, all you want is to get a beach body for the Summer after the holidays.

My training partner was a Powerlifter. He tried to incorporate Bodybuilding Principles when he was ready to lose the extra tire around his waste and trim up for the Summer.
He absolutely hated traditional cardio. I do too, he's not alone. He opted for Circuit Training. It's low intensity, High volume resistance training. That was his cardio. It's always difficult to maintain muscle mass and strength while you are in state of caloric deficit. But you have to do what you feel comfortable you will stick with to attain your objectives.
