Not sure if true but a Tarheel fan told me most ECU students are UNC fans for Basketball first. Minges looks like a tough arena though...has the look of a "Pit" in the good sense.
Because ECU basketball has been terrible for decades.
I can't speak for most ECU students being UNC fans first, but I do know that most kids that grow up in North Carolina (unless they are raised by Pirates) typically watch ACC basketball as kids. Be it UNC, Duke, State, or Wake... whether or not they are able (or willing) to shed that allegiance when they get to ECU is another question.
I grew up a Wake Forest fan. However, by the end of my first year at ECU, I realized I was referring to ECU as "us" or "we"... and Wake as "you" or "they"... it was weird.
But if we start putting a good product on the floor and start winning a lot of games, it won't be difficult to put 8,000 butts in Minges. I think Dooley is the man for the job... he just needs some players.

RE: Dowdy-Ficklen Renovation Update
Just something to think about...
ECU won the CIT Tournament in 2013.
We were in C-USA, along with UCF, Memphis, Houston, & Tulsa.
ECU finished the year 23-12, 9-7 in C-USA.
In the CIT semifinal game (at Minges) vs Evansville... we had an announced attendance of almost 6,000. Against EVANSVILLE. It was the CIT... not the NCAA, NIT, or even the CBI. But just the smallest glimmer of success got almost 6,000 ECU fans into Minges to watch a basically meaningless tournament game against something called the Purple Aces.
If ECU starts playing good basketball, the fans will come.

RE: Dowdy-Ficklen Renovation Update
Well ECU is in prime position to get real good in hoops. Lots of talent on the east coast to draw from.
The league is still trying to sort its self out for who the top 3-4 power programs will be. The sooner they (ECU) elevate the better. No one truly has been consistently great. ECU can tap into a lot of talent with a great recruiting coach.
Back to the stadium renovation...any idea how season ticket sales are going? I gotta figure your bottom season ticket holder base is right now coming off several mediocre to bad seasons. I'm just not sure I would expand though. Most attendance trends nationwide have been contracting. I know you'll say the local ACC teams provide sellouts but can you count on them long term to sell out one game a season to justify the money spent on expansion/renovation?

RE: Dowdy-Ficklen Renovation Update
It’s not an expansion. Season ticket sales are way up from last season.
ECU sold out pretty much every game in CUSA at 50,000 for a couple of seasons.

I thought overall capacity was increasing by 1-2K? I know it is more about premium amenities but still I thought there was a modest expansion?
Hopefully it works out for you guys...you are a good football school with a FB first fan base.
If you have hired the right coach and he wins 10-13 games a season...you surely will fill up the place

Then what’s your point? It’s not an expansion. It’s unclear on how many seats will be added/subtracted there have been different numbers. Any capacity changes will just be a byproduct. The renovation was overdue and a necessity.

RE: Dowdy-Ficklen Renovation Update
Approximately 1000 luxury seats will be added. Apparently some of the older seats will be removed due to new construction. According to the press release, capacity will remain at approximately 50,000.
https://news.ecu.edu/2018/01/12/athletic...ents-fans/
From construction photos I've seen, it doesn't appear that many seats will be removed. Most of the construction is above the old seating, with perhaps some seats removed for camera platforms.
