Trump should take the 1.3 Billion for border fencing and keep America open for business.
Mexico is a failed state. There ain't a fence capable of making them a good neighbor.
Mexico is middle-to-upper-middle class among world nations.
Depending on the ranking, Mexico is around 60-70th out of about 200 countries in GDP/capita. That's about 35th percentile.
If you take out tiny countries, Mexico is about 20th percentile.
Criminal elements have ran the government out and control vast swaths of the country. In the areas the government does control the government is for sale to whomever pays the most. Their military and law enforcement is overmatched and incompetent at best, and untrustworthy and corrupt in general. When the central government loses control to the extent that Mexico's has it doesn't matter what the economy is doing it is a failed state.

Yes, because I don't disagree with the on-scene experts just because it's a political hot issue. Additionally, why would anyone disagree based on the fact the folks screaming right now that it's immoral were all for it and preaching its need just 5 years ago?!

Border Wall, if you don't keep them out, why bother? I posted a story about the "Smart Wall" only problem with that, it just helps catch them once they're in, and once they're in they stay.

A wall would likely be an enormous engineering challenge given the size of the border and there's eminent domain issues abound to that could get it caught up in court fights for a long time.
I'd rather us take billions from the defense contractor feeding troughs and give it to border security.

RE: Do you favor a border wall?
I would like a wall but think it would be more symbolic than effective, and costly. It probably wouldn't take 30 minutes to dig under it, or if you're in good shape to go over it even without a ladder judging from some of the pics of areas already with a wall. What we need to do is change the policies regarding anchor babies and catch and release. Create a no-asylum zone that allows the border patrol to apprehend violators after they cross the border and return them until their case is proven. Force Mexico into guarding the other border and controlling their own citizens.

I agree with the parts of your statement that are highlighted above. I disagree with you about the wall. In my eyes it is a significant deterrent.
For one thing, you can't use any kind of transportation to get past areas where it exists. Sure someone could tunnel under it, but that takes effort both in constructing the tunnel and in maintaining it. Sure someone could attempt to scale the wall as well. After the wall is built, electronic devices (cameras and sensors) could be installed at key places on the wall to monitor anyone trying to scale the wall. Ground penetrating radar could be used at regular intervals to determine if any tunnels had been dug (and then they could be made impassable).
Lastly, the Border Patrol people on the ground doing the work every day to secure the border have stated that there is a need to build a wall to help secure certain areas of the border. I think they know the situation better than I do back here in Virginia.

Do you favor a border wall?
If we’re looking for a 30 ft physical barrier, then simply build them 40 ft tall and bury them 10 feet deep in rebar reinforced concrete slabs.
Cheap and easy. If each section is 20 ft wide, just butt the slabs up against each other. Dig your tunnel under that, hombre.
With our drones aloft and the surveillance cameras on site, you better be a gddamn vole to make it through before someone with a”deterrent” shows up to show you the errors of your way.
Get in line. Come in the right way. You aren’t special. No more special than the guy in Latvia that’s been waiting 7 years.
No one else wants to leg sweep the guy that walks in front of the line at the quickie-mart? Why should we tolerate this crap?

I doubt you ever did this but I remember well just how easy it is to scale a chain link fence.

RE: Do you favor a border wall?
After 1 day of voting we are showing the following -
83% in favor of additional wall.
17% not in favor of additional wall.
If you haven't already voted then please do so. This is a 2 week poll which should take us up to just 2-3 days past the February 15th deadline for Congress to resolve things.

RE: Do you favor a border wall?
I have a better idea than a border wall... Lets make Mexico great again and make it the 51st state. Lets just roll down there and take over and boom... make them all Americans so they don't need to go anywhere. We instantly get back all those manufacturing jobs we lost to Mexico. Mexicans get to become American citizens. We can deal with the Crime/Cartel issue. If we're going to spend Trillions of dollars on other countries, lets do it to one that we can reap the benefits from. And as for boarder security, we now have a much smaller border with Guatemala and Belize to worry about.
I actually proposed something like back when I was in University in one of my classes, and my prof laughed and said 'yea thats an idea that comes up from time to time. It's both a great solution and a horrible solution at the same time.'

Fencing, yes, but not a Donaldian "wall" and not until he's out of office. And only if accompanied by better economic development planning with Central America.

So it's not about safety or security at all with you, just "Orange Man bad." Thanks for clarifying.

We can agree that this is the only viable long-term solution. It was one reason why I supported NAFTA and it is one reason why I support sugar cane ethanol from Latin America.

The economic development of Central America is not the responsibility of the United States taxpayer.

Bump.
Up to 84% voting in favor of building a wall after 2 days of voting.
If you have not already voted then please vote. This is your chance to show what people really think instead of having some fake polling data pushed upon us by the media. Voting is open for 12 more days.

Directly, no, not at all.
But national security is clearly a primary responsibility. And when Latin America is in as deep doo-doo as it is, and when China is already swooping in to take advantage, then we have a clear national security interest in doing so.
