at this point in the season what does someone's predicted finish have to do with anything? It is useless information unless you have an agenda to bash our team and first year coach. and what does " acceptable" have to do with anything either? Do you think The reason we lost today is that the fans "accepted" it? If only we would not "accept" losing to Usf on the road it would not happen?
btw that same Usf team blew out your crush Tubby Smith's led squad last year in our home arena.
Not sure where you get that I was a Tubby supporter. I just stated his recruits weren't as bad as folks imply. I also have stated that he should've never been hired in the first place and we lost the Lawsons because of it. Had Penny been hired after the Austin Nichols transfer season we'd have both Lawsons (without Keelon) along with Chandler next season and Johnathan down the road. Penny was hired 4 years too late. He should already be in year 4 of his tenure but is now playing catchup due to the administration's poor decision making in choosing coaches.
Penny still could of had Chandler next season but didn't want him.
I disagree that Penny didn't want him as a player. He steered away from him only because he wants to move on from the Keelon mess/distraction that was created by Tubby and Josh. Had Penny been hired in 2015 none of this would even be an issue with the Lawson family.
The argument to that is if it was year 4 penny would of been out of the AAU scene for awhile and probably would have had a loaded roster at Memphis with more high level recruits coming in so even if he brought in Chandler he might have ended up a bench player thus transferring out after 1 year. Kansas didnt want him. Why?
Duke wasnt knocking. Why?
Hell Kentucky really either.
He might of had dedric and kj but the Lawson mess was always going to come out eventually. That's just how that family is. Something else would of sparked it.

You may have more insight than I do regarding Penny's relationship with Keelon. I always thought that they thought highly of Penny but their main grudge is against the Memphis administration promising him an assistant job. Apparently Bowen lied to him after Tubby was hired so that he wouldn't jump ship?

Idk about the UT fans, but the rest of your post was spot on. Penny a disappointment? That's crazy talk. He's a different personality, and fans aren't used to watching someone like him work the sideline. He's learning, too.
I trust his judgement, I think he's smart and knows what he wants to do. Get some more parts and we'll see what happens.

I don't consider 13-9 at this point a slam dunk.

Exactly! He's just now learning on the job when he should already been in year 4 had Rudd/Bowen not screwed up the hire. He could've been a seasoned vet by now if not for their incompetence.
Are you suggesting that the university should've hired Penny when he had even LESS experience? He is one of the least experienced head coaches in D1 college basketball already.

It was never going to be about the won/loss record this season. That's crazy talk. Going forward yes, but this year not at all. What do you not get about season ticket sales having dropped to an all time low under Tubby?

This is Martin's third coach. The talent level currently is what the talent level is AND Tubby had to throw together a class after his first team disintegrated and transferred out AND Tubby ran a totally different offense than Penny runs.
Tubby didn't go after top talent so he'd play a more methodical half court game with '4 year' program players. That's not what Penny is going to do and so yes, we have this transition year and yeah, there are some rough spots.
It's not and never has been about this year. Next year will be better just on talent alone and yes, Penny will go from being a freshman coach to a sophomore coach.
Year 3 will really be the year that tells the tale on Penny. He'll have better talent than 95% of the teams he plays by then and he'll have a couple of years of college coaching under his belt.
