Hawking, yes, closeouts are the problem. But the reason we aren't closing out is because we can't stop dribble penetration and are cheating to help. Then, a simple kickout give shooters all the time they need. So, it's a lose/lose/lose for us. We either give up the drive, foul the driver, or give up the 3. All of those are bad outcomes. I really don't care WHY we can't stop dribble penetration, we just can't. And it all happens playing man to man.

BUT, we KNOW there is a solution to stop dribble penetration, stop the kickouts, and stop fouling driving guards. We've seen it, the coaches have seen it, the players know it. Yet, our coaches REFUSE to solve the problem. At this point it's willful negligence or sheer ignorance by McGrath. We now have the worst defense in the nation. We are in next to last place in the CAA. There is ZERO reason to continue playing man to man when we have proven we are the worst at it in the nation. Roll the freakin' dice and play 40 minutes of zone. Grow some stones and admit when you need to change.

That would of course require abandoning your weak side sagging defense (not quite 'Pack Line' because I haven't seen any extreme ball pressure unless Gadsen is on the court) that only encourages guys to let their man blow by because 'help is waiting'.

Nice call! You only have to watch 20 seconds into the post game interview to hear the magic words!

I've tried many times on here to share breakdown video or screenshots of SYNERGY stats to no avail. No matter how small the pic it says I've exceeded the limit. Can anyone help?

I agree 82Hawk it starts with 1 v 1 contain BUT it's not just ISO stuff. It comes from being out of position before pick defense starts, bad offense leading to poor transition D and therefore 'crossmatches', as well as a defensive scheme that puts players in a constant state of recovery. It's ironic that UNCW probably plays the most scoutable offense and defense because it's so plain but thy can't even execute that. I know it seems that I'm piling on but is it wrong to expect more? (Meaning improvement)

Don't disagree, but who cares? For UNCW man to man = bad, ZONE = good. The details don't matter anymore. At the beginning of the year trying to figure out WHY your man to man defense sucks is worth the effort, because you might figure it out ,get better, and end up with a good record. We're beyond that now. We haven't figured anything out through a full OOC schedule and over 1/2 of our conference schedule. Time to break the glass and try emergency measures.

The frustratring part about having such a bad defense is that it is somewhat hidden by the fact we score in the high 70's. If we had the worst offensive efficiency in the nation, it would be obvious to everyone.

The highlights from CAASports stopped with the foul that gave you 3 free throws with 12.5 seconds left. The highlights didn't show how it ended!

It ended, much like our hopes of a quality season, with poor defense.

Bruiser's Drexel teams were just the opposite. Strong defense, awful offense. We had just enough scoring to win ugly and a strong enough defense to always keep us in games. Late in his tenure, our defense slipped to average and below and the losses and blowouts piled up in a big way.
