I’m not a fan of Miami, Atlanta or Charlotte.
I would agree with that. Charlotte’s fine. Not a fan of Atlanta at all. Holds no appeal for me. Lexington, KY, Charleston and Greenville, SC would be my top southern cities. NOLA is a dirty stinking mess. Never saw the appeal to that town.
I’ll ask you the same thing I ask people who say that about NOLA: How much time did you spend outside the French Quarter.

As a Louisiana native, I've spent a lot of time in New Orleans, and lived there for a while. It's a chit whole. Period.

As a resident of Davidson County, I think you give too much credit to 2....not so sure about 3.
Davidson County is bleeding financially. On the verge of becoming a cess pool of spending if they aren't smart financially. There is absolutely no reason Davidson should be below budget with Tennessee's economy....but we are. Davidson County is in a budget shortfall.
Our schools are a complete and utter mess. 21 Nashville schools are in the bottom 5 percent.
Crime is rampant.
Basically, outside of the tourism and healthcare, its a $hithole with nice suburbs and hip/trendy pockets.

RE: OT - Nashville thrives while city of Birmingham struggles
I love New Orleans anytime we are in the area (with in a couple hours) we we go and spend the day or night. I enjoy seeing and being around people from all walks of life. You can get that with a 5 to 10 minute drive in New Orleans. Watched a Mardi Gras Parade in Chalmette year before last...right pass the lower 9th ward. Stopped and ate at Cajun Joe’s Seafood, its carry out only, pay no attention to the bullet proof glass (store) the Shrimp Po' Boy is as good as you will find...anywhere. I can tell some people on this board would be scared shitless even driving through this part of any city. I Probably wouldn't be walking around at 10pm but that goes for most cities outside of the "safe zones". Been in that area many times and never felt unsafe. Seen families and kids and grownups out having fun and doing what all of us do.
I like real people.... people that are not trying to appear they dont have any problems. Some of the most miserable people I've ever seen and been around are in the upper middle class parts of a city.

Damn, you sound spoiled. “Other than the tourism and healthcare”—two important things that almost every Southern city desperately needs—it is a shithole?
My friend, you have no idea what a “shithole” is if you think that Nashville is a shithole.

You sound offended. Do you live in Nashville? Right up the street from me, a 30 year old man was catching the bus to go to work around 6 am and was gunned down for nothing. Why don't you contribute something other than a slur of which you know NOTHING about.

Well...your anecdotal example of an incident that happens in every single city certainly convinced me.
Statistics say that such an incident happens less (or roughly the same) there than it does in most every Southern city.
And you sound far more offended than me. I simply pointed out that you lack perspective if you think Nashville is a shithole.

I've been in Nashville for a couple decades now and yes, Nashville does has some issues, but to say it is a $hithole is absurd.

Unlike Nashville, Birmingham does not enjoy the blessings flowing from steady employment of thousands of state workers, lobbyists, and lawyers associated with a state capital.

A lot more to it than that. Those things haven’t exactly helped Jackson, Montgomery, Tallahassee, etc. become places that people want to go.

I was born and raised in New Orleans. Yes, unfortunately, the crime rate is high and there are some real "combat zones" to stay out of. But....the Big Easy is still the Big Easy. Best food in the world. Our dogs eat better than 95% of the world's population. The Easy also has an "air" about it. It's not like any other American city. It's not exactly like any European cities either. Has elements of both and of all. All mixed together to form something totally unique.
The other thing about the Big Easy is she doesn't care what you think. Critics are clueless but....the Big Easy forgives 'em and welcomes all.
