Nashville is hands down better than CLT and I’ve lived in both places, in the very recent past. CLT is not a bad city at all, but Nashville beats it in almost every measure, outside of the “pretty skyline” measure.

I like Nashville too. That's why my wife and I bought a home here.

But as a now 3-yr resident of Nashville, I can tell everybody that Nashville (metro area) is a city under stress. It's gotten so crowded here, some of the shine is seriously wearing off. Grocery stores can't keep groceries in stock, roads are very crowded, restaurants are overwhelmed, etc.... Moving here from the Dallas metro area has been a real eye opener for us. Clearly, the Nashville area is growing too fast, and the infrastructure and resources are strained here.

Just a warning to anyone who thinks they are going to show up in Nashville and find Utopia. The word is already out.

I love Nashville for their medical facilities. When my son was 14 he wasn’t growing so we were sent to Vandy. They knew the first day he probably had a pituitary tumor. Provided treatment after verifying and he did great. He still goes to Vandy as 30+ adult now for his yearly checkups.

Mother in Law cracked her gourd this summer. The Medical Center in BG saw a bleed on the brain and wanted to fly her Vandy. Storms were bad and the helicopter pilots didn’t want to fly in it so they sent her via ground transport. We were on the 10th floor trauma unit for two days. Stayed with them for a week before being well enough to rehab back in BG. She’s doing well. Win #2 for Vandy.

3 years ago MIL needed a heart procedure for a leaky valve. Can’t do it in BG but they sure do them at St Thomas in Nashville.

That doesn’t even take in all the great music I’ve taken in at all the small venues in Nashville. None of them the pop country that the industry cranks out. There’s a ton of great places down there to catch really good music at.

Good places to eat that aren’t the usual chains.

That’s the good. The traffic is shittty. Someone mentioned the no state tax as a draw to industry. Yes. Can’t argue that. But the no state tax leads to what I believe is a shittty highway system in the whole hilljack state of Tennessee.

Many years ago that stretch between Madison and Trinity Lane was under constant construction that just killed you coming down. They finally finished it and it was much better for awhile. But Nashville has outgrown itself again and the Trinity Lane are is jacked again. Almost everytime I go Waze takes me a different way to circumvent Trinity.

Tennessee needs to 3 lane I-65 from the Rivergate Exit 97 all the way to the Kentucky line. A lot of those folks working in Nashville live from Millersville all the way to Portland. Hell, a ton of BG people work in Nashville now. That won’t fix the Trinity Lane junction problem but it’ll help anyone going north.

It’s possible Nashville won’t be able to keep up with the growth with their highway system just like Orlando has never been able to keep I-4 up to par with its growth. Hell, Orlando has just thrown up toll roads all over town so you can stay off of 4 but you’ll be paying for it.

All my complaints aside. I love having Nashville in our backyard. Their medical facilities are a blessing to have so close. BG has become a regional medical center for this area. I’ve had my knee scoped a couple times. But for the serious stuff, it’s nice to have Nashville available.

Nashville is a great city. I am not even into country music, and is an underrated city for all music types.....Nashville traffic is not great on I65 south but it beats Cincinnati traffic every day.....Cincinnati has worse interstate traffic ever the last 10 years and its not close maybe besides LA. Amazes me on a Sunday at 3, you will still be sitting on interstate outside cincy. I have been to several Titans games Sunday morning and hardly ever been stopped on interstate...

CLT is a nice town. Nothing to complain about there. But in terms of fun, entertainment, and the food scene, Nashville beats it hands down. ATL is fun too, but I’d take Nashville over either one hands down. ATL is just a totally different city than Nashville though. Bham is good too, and is definitely getting better, but it doesn’t compare to the other cities mentioned here.

RE: OT - Nashville thrives while city of Birmingham struggles
Nashville took a huge step ahead of Birmingham with the Nashville-Davidson government merger. Birmingham is constantly hamstrung by its suburbs, often consciously and deliberately acting to derail development or just plain screw with that city run by black people.

Birmingham had its chance to do the same, with a forward-looking white mayor, David Vann, and his One Great City plan. And then a badly-trained white cop panicked and shot an innocent black woman multiple times at point-blank range. The police chief backed his man, the issue became racial, and Vann was defeated by Richard Arrington, a supposedly liberal and thoroughly corrupt black councilman.

Arrington ran the city poorly, corruption thrived (sometimes comically in the open), and he and his cronies hamstrung opponents. Birmingham finally has an intelligent mayor from outside the Arrington machine (we’ve had others, but they were dumber than a box of bricks). If the new guy overcomes his fairly deep political naïveté we might finally get somewhere.

Ha! LOL at your CLT and Atlanta inferiority complex.

I’ve lived overseas in Beijing, China where literally the population is 10x that of Charlotte. Does that mean I want to live, work or raise a family full time there?

Birmingham and Nashville question. I’ve got to spend some time in both cities in the coming months.

Birmingham: Where are the best pockets of hotels and local restaurants? Any suggestions?

Nashville: The same. I’ve been to both Hattie Bs and Princes. Any other nice areas for hotels or restaurants?

Thanks in advance! I figure my dysfunctional but forthright CUSA brethren can help out, this thread looks like a natural for that conversation.

If you haven’t been to Asheville, NC you’re missing out.

Eclectic downtown, beautiful mountain scape and brews out the ying yang.

I would agree with that. Charlotte’s fine. Not a fan of Atlanta at all. Holds no appeal for me. Lexington, KY, Charleston and Greenville, SC would be my top southern cities. NOLA is a dirty stinking mess. Never saw the appeal to that town.

Florida, Tennessee, and Texas have no state income tax. 14 of the top 25 fastest growing cities (and 6 of the top 10) are in those three states.

If you get the businesses ($$$) the culture, arts, and nightlife will follow. It's really that simple.

True, however gov't usually gets their share one way or another. Nashville has a very high sales tax.

I've been in Nashville for about 20 years now and I liked Nashville more before the population explosion. Infrastructure growth has NOT kept pace with the population growth. "Big city" issues are on the rise like the price of housing, traffic, parking (I use Lyft a lot now) and crime. I used to like going to Broadway with the honky tonk bars and now I avoid it as much as possible since it has become so crowded. I don't think it has been mentioned yet, however the TV show "Nashville" that was on ABC and finished on CMT is part of the reason for the population growth.

Go Titans. Beat the Colts. 04-cheers
