I've been to Florida a couple handfuls of times, and I can't recall seeing anything but Publix. Seems very strange. It's not like they're an amazing store. Pretty good, but not so good that no one else could compete. And I also thought they were expensive.
Maybe we're spoiled in Houston with selection (I've read it's the most competitive grocery market in the US) but seems odd that they have a monopoly. No one else has thought to move in?
There are others, Winn-Dixie is probably the largest competing chain, and there are many more niche groceries stores such as Aldi, Fresh Market, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Earth Fare, Trader Joe's, etc and lower cost ones like Save-A-Lot. You also have your discount warehouses such as Costco and BJ's along with groceries at Wal-Mart and Target.
But, really, Publix is so popular that many of there biggest competitors such as Alberson's, Food Lion, Sweetbay, etc. have been put out of business by them.
I am surprised that Kroger - with their marketing and buying clout and loyalty from recent residents - has not made a bigger dent.
Kroger was down in Florida in the 80's operating under the name Florida Choice. They sold those stores or closed them. Publix has a pretty dominant presence there. Kroger did buy a retail center in Palm Beach County back in August.

Wine and beer yes. Unfortunately its illegal for grocery stores to sell liquor in Florida. Almost got legalized last year until Rick Scott vetoed the bill. Almost all Publix plazas have a liquor store though and a lot of times its a Publix branded liquor store. Just has to be separate from the grocery store.

We have one of those, too, but [hot take]Pollo Tropical sucks[/hot take]. There are literally a hundred better Cuban restaurants you can find.

Sure there are better Cuban restaurants but we're talking about College Students. Pollo Tropical has good chicken and filling food for McDonalds prices, I'm not in college anymore and I love it but especially college students that eat out more looking for cheap meals.
Pollo Tropical:Cuban Food::Little Ceasar's:pizza
It's cheap, it's edible, but it's not "good."

No way...the only cheap stuff is the BOGO's
The rest is overpriced
BTW, Wegman's is so much better than Publix

Fresh Market, Whole Foods, and Winn Dixie but Florida loves Publix and Publix loves em right back.

I'm kind of with you - Publix is more expensive on average than Winn Dixie, which is our next biggest grocery chain here.
Funny thing is, the Tampa area has had just about every chain that exists. Albertson's came and went. Food Lion, too. We even had a few Safeways here a couple of years ago. They all ultimately couldn't make it work. We have the lower cost alternatives (including Aldi and even the Walmart Neighborhood grocery stores), the high end ones (Trader Joe's, Whole Paycheck) and a few one offs. But we've never had a Wegman's.

Wegmans is slowly moving South...they are just coming into NC. I figure Atlanta and SC within 3-5 years

Truly a power move by a power 6 university. USF students will have their bodies powered by Publix subs and produce. The meal plan just saw a powerful expansion.
I was just going to say this was a P6 "move"! Congrats! (Now female freshmen will hit their Freshmen 10-15 even BEFORE Xmas break...as you can't say no to a FULL Publix Sub!)

RE: USF opens On Campus Publix
I think the XFL messed up by going into NFL markets. I would have done the following
1) Syracuse - Carrier Dome
2) Columbus - Mapfre Stadium
3) Norfolk - Foreman Field
4) Raleigh - Carter-Finley Stadium
5) Orlando - Citrus Bowl
6) Memphis - Liberty Bowl
7) San Antonio - Alamo Dome
8) St Louis - America’s Center
9) San Diego - SDCCU Stadium
10) Portland - Providence Park
Duplicate Markets (but slightly different)
11) New York City - Yankee Stadium
12) Boston - Fenway Park
——————————————————
Expansion Markets
Birmingham - (New Stadium)
Louisville - Papa Johns Stadium
Milwaukee - Millar Park
Salt Lake City - Rice-Eccles Stadium
Washington DC - RFK Stadium (Renovated)
Philadelphia- PPL Park
Ft Worth - TCU Stadium

Florida really had nothing like Wawa--an actual good convenience store with gas and no fee ATMs--so in retrospect it makes total sense that the Florida expansion has been as successful as it has been. It was an unfilled niche in the local business ecosystem just waiting for someone to exploit it.
I wish I could get the Cuban hoagie up here...
