RE: 2018-19 Basketball Games of Interest
1. I miss the CAA tournament of old. The brown dump sucked, the employees there were the worst. But the games and energy were great. 2. Theres no way W&M or JMU will accept a buy game from us and I don't blame them. 3. Theres no way we should accept a buy game from VCU. I wouldnt even want to accept one from VT. We own the Hokies. Perhaps a 2-1 with UVA since its an easy drive up and back.

Imagine being Gonzaga. Go undefeated in conference play with an average margin of victory of 25 (I made that up) and not win the conference championship. It's cool, they will still be a 2 seed at worst.

Unless Jeff Jones and UVA have a gentlemen’s agreement not to play each other, I don’t see why they wouldn’t take a 2 for 1. Tony Bennett gave JMU a 2 for 1 series a couple of years ago.
On the flip side both VCU and George Mason got straight home and homes with UVA so not sure whether the movers and shakers at ODU would like the optics of anything less than a straight home and home series.

UVA also cancelled a handshake deal with us that had us on their schedule and replaced us with Marshall (pretty sure this news is all unofficial stuff). They've also scheduled MT. Feels weird they are willing to schedule other CUSA teams but not us.

Possible reason's just a guess!
BJ Stith transferred from UVA to us. Bryant Stith all time UVA scorer, maybe they feel weird about him coaching at ODU. Jeff Jones was fired from UVA. Wood Selig left UVA for Western Kentucky. Like I said, I have NO CLUE but perhaps those folks hold grudges!

The "unofficial" reason ODU was given was that Bennett felt our style of play was to similar to theirs and they would not get any more benefit from playing us than they would from having a practice. Of course, that may have nothing to do with the real reason and your thoughts may be spot on. Still, that is what we were told.

I still think the rumored aspects outside of basketball that were part of JJ's firing at UVA are the reason they won't play us.

MT was their first-round game at Atlantis, unless they've also signed a deal. Virginia did host Marshall this season; I think it was a buy but I'm not sure and I can't find anything one way or another.
If Virginia wants, for whatever reason, to big-time ODU in a way that they won't for even JMU and Mason, let them. I see no benefit to ODU going to Charlottesville, hat in hand, in humble hope for largesse from Big Daddy. Plus if Tony Bennett leaves and they don't nail the replacement hire, who's to say they won't go right back to the Gillen/Leitao wilderness years? I'd like to see them in the Ted and I'd like to see them on the schedule, but let's not pretend they're Duke or UNC either.

They aren't Duke or UNC, but they are still a consistent contender in the ACC and supposedly more accessible to us than Duke/UNC since we share the state and share some history.

But apparently they're not as accessible to ODU as they are to VCU, George Mason, GW or JMU. They're a strong program now with decent history but they don't have the call to be big-timing ODU like they were Longwood or Coppin State. I wouldn't want ODU to take a buy game against them or Virginia Tech, which really needs to get the stick out of the arse with regards to scheduling decent in-state competition.

Not a game of interest, but Tony Shaver was let go by W&M after 16 years there.

Writing was on the wall. I mean 16 years and not one NCAA berth. Good coach, good man, but think they gave him plenty of time.

We should bring him on as a shooting/FT assistant.

He'd make a heck of an assistant. I think he's a good coach, but nobody can turn W&M into a consistent winner. Im pretty surprised he's gone.

So, does this mean we have JJ for 10 more years? s/ or is it /s
Real shame. Tony Shaver is an absolute class act and they should be thrilled he stayed with them this long. Good luck doing any better.
I'msure he"ll land on his feeet in short order. At least he's being let go early in the firing/hiring season.

Stupid move, that man can coach. Before Shaver we used to beat them by what, 30 every game. Maybe they can get some ex Yale, Stanford or Harvard coach!
