Yep. We were a Top 20 defense in Barry Odom's last year with us. That team had nowhere near the talent that this team has.

Sorry, but I don't think either of those statements are true.

And you would be wrong. Memphis was 21st (sorry) in Total Defense in 2014. In 2013, Memphis was dead last in conference recruiting and second to last in 2012.

Under Odom we were. 51st- 2012, 39th- 2013 and 29th - 2014.

Yeah, I've looked at 3 different sites for 2014 (Odom's last year) and we were not top 20 in any of them. Anywhere from 28-41.

As for talent, HS rankings aside, there was a lot of talent on D during Odom's years. 2015 alone, we had Ifedi and McCain drafted, with Etienne as a free agent.

Now, there is no doubt Odom's D was better than what we have now. But it wasn't top 20 with zero talent.

A lot of those Odom's defenses were Porter-recruited talent.

And our defense from 2013-14 (last two games of 2013 aside, when we just mailed it in and gave up) was legit AF.

Its all about ZERO pass rush.

Winner Winner. We give the WR's a 5 yard cushion and don't pressure the opposing QB's. Even the best NFL corners would get burned in those situations.

Our D line definitely gets pushed around by most every team they face.

It’s not that they get pushed around. It’s they give up too many big plays. And that’s because the scheme and positioning is bad. Which equates to coaching. Plain and simple.

This too

Y'all aren't fans of the "Chris Ball Slaw" defense? lol

Our Offense only needs to score 40+ for Chris Ball's Defense to help us pull out a victory.

It's better when you're creating 31 turnovers with a +15 margin like last year. This year, they've only created 12 to's.

BRING BACK JOE LEE
Remember bone head plays and missed tackles can't be on the Coach and maybe the talent

I don't agree with the term "created TO's". A large percentage of TO's are due to mistakes by the other team. A bad pass, OK, you caught it, but you didn't really "create" anything. Sure, some INT's are created, but not all. A muffed punt generally is not created, it's a screw up by the other guy. A lot of fumbles are not due to a defender knocking the ball out.

4th down stops are created TO's, and we certainly haven't had many of those this year.

JLD defense was so bad that Tommy West fired him mid season. We need to do better than that. Now when TW was the DC under Rip, the defense was legit. But we can't bring him back either. I wonder if Todd Graham would come to Memphis and work for his pupil?

It's a combination of both. Sometimes to's just happen. But there is no doubt that some philosophies and teams are better at generating to's. It involves taking chances on coverage, and techniques that are taught.

RE: Fire every coach on defense
This side of the ball has to be addressed. I've seen far less talented teams under Schearer and West play much better defense. There is a serious lack of physicality, poor fundamentals (tackling, angles), and there seems to be a conceptual disconnect. Too many times are WRs running free or backs aren't getting picked up out the of backfield, no route recognition. The defense has been predicated on turnovers, which are huge, but we're not doing it this year. Also, its hard to create TOs with no pass rush and WRs with 10 yards of separation. I understand that creating TOs limits scoring opportunities for the opponent and gives our offense more, but a defensive foundation needs to be established. We need to control the line of scrimmage better in running and passing situations. We need to tackle better in the open field. We need to make QBs make tough throws under pressure. We need to stay ahead of the chains on 1st and 2nd down. We need to know our assignments better.

I assumed that Graham was an offensive-minded coach.

Despite that fact, we were a little better than we have been lately.

DJ Durkin was fired at Maryland...went 11-15 as a HC and served as DC at both Florida and Maryland.

he'd make a great Assoc HC/DC for Memphis.

Yes, let's hire a coach who was just fired for abusing his players.

as I understand it a player fell out while being individually worked out by the Strength Coach...that coach along with the training staff did not render proper aid. The Strength Coach along with the head trainer were fired and DJ Durkin's only crime was being at the practice that day.

that's the story I was told. is that not true?
