September 17 NIU loses to #8 Wisconsin L 7–49 , WI would finish 11-3
September 24 NIU gets by FCS CalPoly W 47–30
October 1 NIU loses at CMU 41–48, CMU would finish 3-9

That was an extremely young defense that year, if you remember.

Let’s find some positives to build on(to save our sanity)

So it’s only $1.1M more at most once the game is played.

There is no doubt that the money we get from FSU and Iowa is already planned for use in its entirety to pay the bills until the next paydays at Nebraska and Utah next year. We don’t have extra money sitting around to pay for new coach searches, double pay a new coach from December - June while Carey’s contract runs out, or pay beyond what we are paying Carey for the top notch coach many seem to think they want

If we can't afford what's needed, we should just close up shop.

Here are the positives.

Huskies are still undefeated in the MAC.
They have a clearer idea of what areas to focus on and improve.

DogFan,

I'm sorry you don't understand, but Northern Illinois University has had to cut $9.1M (10%) out of its budget since FY '15. Combine that with decline enrollment numbers (>30% over the past decade), there is a legitimate financial issue facing this institution. EVERYONE at this school is being asked to do more w/ less and it's spectacular how well the university continues to operate. There are greater needs than finding a new head football coach. Please, stop being so ignorant.

Go Huskies.

If everyone is in such dire straits, the Department of Athletics should contribute to saving the university by getting rid of its head coach. He gets a nice piece of change with his contractual incentives. Get rid of him and hire someone green at a lower rate or promote a grad assistant. Either way, the results will be better and money will be saved.

Another way to save money is to cut some sports. We can't afford to continue the fringe sports. If UIC could cut gymnastics, NIU could cut a couple sports. These would be non-revenue sports that cost money but do not bring in revenue.

Also, since we are apparently at the brink of financial devastation, where is the massive fundraising campaign? Oh, I know....that costs money, which we don't have.

I'm not debating Rod Carey's salary or the salary of his coaching staff. As I stated earlier, there will not be an extensive search for Carey's replacement. If his contract isn't renewed in 2019, the search will likely be from a short-list of names or there will be a promotion from within (things will be done in a financially savvy manner). Furthermore, if I'm a coach, I'd think long and hard about accepting a job offer at a public institution in the State of Illinois. There are zero promises we will have a set budget come June.

Cutting a sport is always going to be a last resort - as it should be. It really ***** over the student-athletes, especially the ones that are in a redshirt year. This is a decision that would have to be thought over carefully, and I'm not sure of the feasibility due to Title IX requirements.

Fundraising campaigns have been going on (i.e. Campaign to Sustain, Engineering Our Future Campaign, Giving Tuesday Campaign) every year. The issue is, the university needs more unrestricted dollars to help support the school's general scholarship fund. It's hard to campaign for that because donors rarely provide unrestricted gifts. Bottom line, Northern Illinois University's immediate goal is and has been financial sustainability. That's why Lisa Freeman will likely become the next President and they will forgo an outside search. None of this is black and white. There are so many things to consider with this school and with the State of Illinois. Go Huskies.

Agree with everything. Thank you.

I hope the list for Carey's replacement is indeed short and well thought out. No matter who they hire has to be an improvement. Just as long as they don't extend his contract (which I feel will happen).

RE: Let’s find some positives to build on(to save our sanity)
If we do get another coach, we have to be careful what we wish for.

It is shortsighted to say that anything will be an improvement over Carey. Before 2002, competing for MAC Championships, beating P5 teams, and going to bowl games was just a pipe dream. We have been there before, and can go there again. Certainly it would be great to win another MAC Championship and bowl game.

So going further backward is possible. I just hope that doesn’t happen with a coaching change. Between a simple search (everyone remembers the lazy hire of Carey just before the Orange Bowl) and the uncertainty at NIU ... declining enrollment, declining FB attendance, budget woes, state funding woes we would be very lucky to land a coach that takes us back to the Orange Bowl.

Root for Jordan Lynch at MC...he helped lead NIU football to greatness. Hopefully he can someday bring us back.

yep.

Hard to claim financial hardship when we spend loads of money on non-revenue sports that make little sense (e.g. baseball). Sorry, but true.

Also, hiring a new coach should NOT mean "paying $x thousands" to a search firm. I can (and have) get you a really good list of candidates in one afternoon. And I will do it for 1/10 the "search fee." Hell, I'll do it for nothing-- a donation in kind.

If Carey goes say good by to our recruiting class. Also if you go with a in name to save money, how do you think recruiting will go. Carey has flaws and is stubborn but he has kept program winning. One kick ass QB and we are in our way. Wright seems to have skills

yep. You are correct.

Tough situation. How long does he get to figure out the QB situation and the offense as a whole? Get him a legit O-Coordinator then.

Also, if Carey goes, expect some good players to transfer out (via uncertainty and the relations Carey established with some of the players) Not sure what how he does it, but one thing that can be denied is he is a really good recruiter.

Recruiting is great but he doesn't use the talent that he gets.
Remember when Toledo always had the best recruiting classes but NIU won the West.
