Net Neutrality ... our first case study
Quote:Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during Calif. wildfire

Fire dep't had to pay twice as much to lift throttling during wildfire response.

This is the kind of **** that will cause it to be a valid public policy. If you're on the right and you don't want net neutrality, then you should be for burning Verizon a new regulatory ***hole very loudly and very publicly right now.

The information superhighway should be a public utility available equally to all.

Verizon should be skewered for this but I can also find fault with the fire department for purchasing a plan with a 25G limit before throttling for an essential service.

If left to their own devices, Verizon would have no horizon.

The information superhighway should be like any other service, if you want something more than the basic, you PAY FOR IT.

UPS, ground is one charge, RED is MORE.

I have absolutely no problem with the service providers saying that if you want more bandwidth or faster service, you pay for it.

while I completely agree with the capitalist premise, in this case (emergency situation), I can only view it as gouging a resource that has limited funds.....

The odds of being attacked by a shark are greatly reduced if you don’t get in the water. Mathematics say there is little difference between salt water and fresh water.

Almost 15 posts in and nobody has pointed out the inherent legal lie that is "unlimited" data plans. Unlimited unlimited unlimited (size 4pt: LTE speeds until (small number of GB) then slower data (3G for a while if your carrier is "generous") like 2G/Edge, which isn't even enough for navigational data if you have cached maps even.

In a case like this when dealing with emergency services, I'm sure deals can be made to make sure they have the data if necessary.

Other than that, let the market decide.

Technically, it's still unlimited data, it's the speed of that data that changes after a certain amount.

Legally I don't think that would be an issue.

It's kind of dirty pool, but not illegal.

again, I completely agree with the latter.....

however, when the former needs that access, it doesn't cost a dayum thing to the provider to flip that switch.....that's when it becomes gouging....

Precisely. Legal. But not ethical in the least.
