Foolish. I'm not sure what you mean by a GOP administration. Obviously, in modern times, there never has been a Republican mayor of Chicago.

For all but two of the last 35 years, the Dems have controlled the state House, with Madigan as Speaker. They've controlled the Senate for 25 of the last 35 years. The Republicans elected to governor during that time have all been moderate/liberal.

Chicago/Illinois have been under the control of the Democrats for decades.

The Chicago Democrats get along with the state Democrats just fine. The City is the way it is because of Democrat ideals and administration. It can't be pinned on anyone else.

Mike Madigan has bankrupted the state, and Richie Daley bankrupted the City. Now, it is all falling apart.

So there have been two recent GOP Governors, Ryan and Rauner. Ryan was just as incompetent (if not more so) than the Dems precisely because he was every bit (if not more so) corrupt than the Dems. Rauner was just as incompetent (if not more so) because he didn't bother attacking corruption and instead used his political capital to attempt to enact ALEC style right wing garbage that wasn't going to pass instead of going after the corruption first (which is why he was put into office in the first place).

The people of Illinois, not once, but twice, have tried to solve the corruption issue by electing a Republican. It didn't work either time. And Rauner's tenure was even more of a disaster for the GOP going forward, because Rauner nationalized the GOP agenda (highly unpopular in the state) and tried to cram it down the state's throats.

Here's the model of who could be a good and effective GOP governor in Illinois. A non-ALEC social liberal who believes in basic gun control metrics like Mark Kirk. But he wasn't interested in Springfield.

In Mass, VT, and MD, there are GOP governors. They're all pretty popular and I think all of them win reelection. None of them are Trumpers I
think Governor Hogan of Maryland might actually run against Trump in the GOP primaries in 2020 - as a way of giving non-Trump Republicans a protest vote candidate), all of them are social liberals, and they work with the Dem legislatures, not against them.

----

A start of a real solution in Chicago is for the state legislature to enact a bill allowing municipalities, via a city wide voter referendum

1) Mandating city wide zoning and planning to take the power away from the Aldermen
2) Mandating no appointments for vacant seats so that actual open seat races occur
3) Mandating a city wide registry with criminal penalties for non registry for holding guns in Chicago (that registry shall list where the owner got the gun)
4) Holding elections for Police Chief
5) Authorize each ward or combinations of wards to create their own police departments and DAs. Let CPD and the DAs compete to see who wants them in their communities. I'll bet permissive crime zones end immediately in that case. And non-prosecution.

Ryan was elected in 1997. I guess your definition of "recent" is different than mine. Regardless, Rauner was elected simply because he was not Pat Quinn, perpetual political gadfly.

Rauner's a social liberal, but don't let that get in the way of your ridiculousness.

Since the power of the purse lies in the legislature, tell me how many times the Republicans have controlled that during my 45 years on this Earth? Chart Democratic control with when the pension crisis exploded. You'll find it was under the Blago/Madigan administration. Its undeniable.

The power of the legislature is located in Chicago. Acting like they are something different is a complete disengagement from reality. The Dems are perfectly happy with how Chicago runs.

If Trump can find a way to fix some of Chicago's worst problems, he might be able to flip Illinois RED once again.

Trump can't help Chicago, only an act of God can.

(08-03-2018 04:17 PM)Tom in Lazybrook Wrote:  Rahm and the rest of the Chicago pols are truly despised by the people. There's no such thing as an open election there (current holders always resign and then appoint their successors) and there's retribution for not backing the winner, especially in Aldermanic districts.

Here's how it should be reformed

1) Dramatically curtail the Aldermen's power. Currently, they basically can shut down any business or delay any developent, for basically no reason. Establish a city wide, professional - non patronage, permits office, and an elected zoning commission. Have the requirements be set by broad zones, not by aldermanic districts to remove the power from the Aldermen.

2) End the process of appointments to elected office. In the event of a vacancy, the seat shall remain vacant until a special election is held.

3) Serious police reform. The cops on one hand are brutal in some areas, but permit open crime zones in others. The though process is that if they shut down crime in area A, it will just move to area B. So they let crime occur in area A. I own a condo in Chicago. For about a decade, there was a group of drug dealers openly peddling smack on the corner of my block, directly in front of an elementary school and a block from the El. Daytime, nightime, all the time. And my neighborhood is not that bad of an area (Blogovich lived two blocks away and Loyola of Chicago is 4 blocks away). Very few, rich or poor, black or white, have much confidence or trust in CPD.

4) Serious prosecutorial reform. Another problem is that the DA frequently refuses to prosecute people. There was a vagrant who was arrested over 300 times in my neighborhood up there. In a 5 year period. Never charged with anything. Then she got violent.

Chicago though requires nuance to fix. Trump doesn't do nuance. So you've got one person asking for Trump's help basically to go after Rahm. The second Trump gets involved, all hell will break loose. No one trusts him, and why should they - Trump has shown nothing but contempt for the people of Chicago for years.

And no, Illinois has zero chance of going red. What you're seeing is a local politician looking to embarrass Rahm. The Dems wil romp in Illinois this year, Rauner will be replaced by a Dem, and Roskam will lose his suburban CD.

Chicago's political problems (and Illinois') aren't a Republican or Democratic issue. The same problems happened under GOP Administrations too. Its really a corruption issue.

Chicago's biggest problem is that many areas have been turned into war zones.

Change starts at the neighborhood level.

The people can't on one hand "march" against violence then refuse to cooperate with the police to apprehend the criminals. The people can't complain about "lack of police" then turn around and complain when the cops start policing their neighborhoods.

Until the crime and killing goes down, NO ONE will open businesses or create "opportunities" in those neighborhoods. It starts with WORKING WITH law enforcement and not against them. Until THAT happens, nothing will change.

Support isn't nonexistent, but really only because that'll happen when there's nearly millions of people in a given area. Chicago is about as far left as you can find outside of the coasts - for example, a neighboring suburb I live in voted 70-28 for Hillary in 2016, yet that was less Democratic than any Chicago neighborhood in the rest of my congressional district (comprised of downtown, the west part of the city, pockets of the south side, and a few west suburbs around where I am).

Chicago's violence doesn't get fixed without a comprehensive cultural shift; even when Madigan gets replaced some day nothing will change without the entrenched mindset of the city and its politicians. It's really sad since the city has a lot of character, plenty of great qualities, and many good people (especially compared to New York and LA). Though it's worth noting that there's a referendum on the ballot for November to put in term limits on the mayor's office, which would disqualify Rahm from next February's election.

in no way does that surprise me.....

you have the ones that get the 'free' stuff and the rich folks that get the property tax write-offs......it's win-win for dems.....

how much longer that lasts is going to be their and coastal(s) undoing with DJT at the helm.....and they know it....

How long before the tolerant left demands that Rep. Ford has to publicly apologize and fall on his sword for his blasphemy. I'll put the over/under at tomorrow, 5 pm. I'll take the under.

#walkaway Chicago. They need to save themselves from Democrat oppression.

Big Tent. Patriots welcome.

Actually, you'll find out soon enough.

In 2016, Cook County (which is more conservative than Chicago) gave Trump 21 percent of the vote. Trump got 12 percent in the City. Much of that would be in a few pockets in the SW side of the city.

We can see exactly how much the GOP has gained by looking at the Gubernatorial results for Illinois' open seat this year. They'll be slightly higher than 12 percent, but then again, the GOP candidate isn't Trump. I suspect he'll draw about 12 percent in 2020. Its really hard to get below 12 percent. Trump got 10 percent of the vote in the 48th ward, where my condo is located. I don't vote there though. The condo is rented and I live and vote in Texas

http://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/Nove...President/ has a really cool map. If you;d like to see how Trump did in the African American community just click on some of the area south of downtown. My God, he was south of 5% on the South side. That Rep. is playing with fire. Trump got 10 percent in his district. I get it, he hates Rahm. Most people do. I think many people blame the GOP's love for the NRA (and one particular gun store, where many of the guns used in Chicago's crimes come from) as much - if not more - than Rahm for the problem with violence. But that's a dangerous game he's playing. Primaries happen.

I like when you guys make predictions.

60 Shot, Nine Dead In Chicago Since Friday

Rahm could care less what the number is....

Quote:CHICAGO (WLS) — Dozens of people were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday, police said.

One paramedic described the evening as “a war zone.”

Since midnight, police said 43 people have been shot, six fatally. Since Friday at 5 p.m., 60 people have been shot, nine fatally, in shootings in Chicago.

34 of the shootings and five deaths occurred between 10 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, according to police. During one two-and-a-half hour-hour period, 25 people were shot in five multi-injury shootings.

“We know that some of these incidents were targeted and are related to gang conflicts in those areas,” said Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller at a press conference Sunday afternoon.

The carnage continues.

Four killed, nearly 60 shot as violent weekend rocks Second City

Quote:Two teens who had been reported missing were among the four people killed and 54 people shot this weekend in Chicago, as the city's gun violence epidemic continued unabated.

The weekend tally was up compared to the same weekend in 2017, which saw 48 people shot and five killed, officials told Fox News on Monday.

I worked for four politicians while I lived in Illinois. Two of the four went to jail, and a third should have. No Illinois politician is worth their body weight in dog shite.

No.

But he's better than the alternative.
