RE: AAF football team announced for Memphis
If the AAF can get known qbs like Kaepernick, Tebow, it could be worth watching, but, again, they need to keep expectations low, aim for like 10k attendance. One of the guys in the AAF was involved with the USL when they were exploring Memphis, which I thought was interesting.

Tebow plays baseball now and seems pretty good at it, why would he stop to play minor league football?

Because actually he's not 'pretty good at it'?

30 years old, hitting .241 in AA with 21 hits and 41 strikeouts. Tebow maybe realizes he's a draw for AA crowds, but has about zero chance of a real baseball career. So he takes another shot at football. Who knows?

Pretty good? Draws a crowd and has very good character but he is not a very good baseball player.

Total of 8 in the AAF:

Already three -

Orlando
Atlanta
Memphis

Remaining five -
Columbus, OH
Oklahoma City
St. Louis
Sacramento
Austin, TX

Phoenix is in talks for Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, so I would imagine San Diego or So Cal would also be in the mix.

Sure -

that all makes sense - if STL gets one, I suppose SD should as well,

as does a team in NYC or Chi for CBS......quite frankly, I'm surprised they announced for Memphis to be honest - though I think they're banking on the SEC West geography as well as UTK

Jerrah has a perfect facility for this in Frisco but I'm sure the NFL wouldn't be keen on this.

Maybe 5 years down the road this and the USL teams are successful and they look at a shared new facility downtown.

AAF tweet from last night seems to hint at Salt Lake City being the next to get a team.

Hey...why not? If it's a bust, it's a bust. But until then, might as well have some fun with it. I'm interested to see how it goes.

RE: AAF football team announced for Memphis
There are some pretty large metro areas without professional football.

OKC/Tulsa
San Antonio/Austin
Salt Lake City
San Diego
Portland
ABQ
Columbus OH
Raliegh Durham
Richmond/Norfolk/Hampton Roads
Birmingham
Orlando
Hartford

Just to name some

RE: AAF football team announced for Memphis
scratch Orlando off

This AAF league will add Salt Lake City, Phoenix and likely San Diego

That leaves one more West and one more East team to make 8

I can easily see those last two coming from your list above

I'm thinking they'll go into Texas. San Antonio/Austin makes a lot of sense.

Yes they do -

I think the other East team will be either Birmingham or Columbus, OH.....remember Vince's XFL is fighting for markets as well, and they start one year later in 2020

I've never understood this infatuation that minor football leagues seem to have with Birmingham. Is it the thought that Crimson Tide/War Eagle fandom will roll over into any kind of football? And Legion Field.... 03-puke

Metro Birmingham is almost as big as Memphis.

And they have a history of supporting minor league football. They supported the USFL and XFL.

Minor league players hitting .244 and nearly leading the league in strikeouts are not likely to get called up. Maybe if you are Jordan or Bo Jackson. If Tebow went against the caliber of pitchers in the majors, he would look foolish.

I think that logic you state can be construed in favor of minor leagues in Birmingham. Additionally, a prudent league would consider ratings generated by a market (as has been used, in Memphis' favor, for NBA and other events). I don't know Birmingham's record on that in football. Also, a league would look at corporate presence and perceive in Birmingham an enormous opportunity that has traditionally been untapped.

I thought the interview with Ebersol on 92.9 was very interesting, in that he unveiled his analysis of Memphis as a market, and the analysis for Atlanta and Orlando. With respect to Memphis, he pointed to the talent from Memphis, and a participation in youth football that contradicted the trend of decline nationally. I think he overestimates the state loyalty, but, by a similar token, underestimates a more general affinity for SEC football. I don't know how Birmingham fares in youth football, or other factors, perhaps Birmingham isn't interested and has shared as much with them. Or perhaps they will be added down the road.

If the league merged Birmingham and Huntsville in its analysis, that would be a larger market than Memphis, with many transplants (especially in Huntsville's aerospace industry) lacking the single-minded obsession with Auburn or Alabama that many perceive as an obstacle.
