some folks, like me, like it. Not getting into specifics, but I would rather have them on the schedule than a damn McNeese St. ... why? Because I know who and what UAB is - especially since the turn of this century, since we were ex-conference mates.
That is kind of it, it is not like UAB is going to be our marquee non-conference game. I would much rather be playing UAB then most other weak schools. History helps build a little interest as opposed to a Central Arkansas or Missouri State.
And I guess you are making my point.
People keep "saying" that it draws more interest, but the "fact" remains it provides little or no bump over a directional school.
Like I factually noted earlier, the UAB game outdrew the McNeese State game by 400 people. That game outdrew the Milwaukee game by 26. Seven AAC games drew better than UAB that year. Only the Tulsa and Tulane (by 201 people) drew less than UAB.
LSU this year, by contrast, drew the second most fans (behind Cinci). There is actual proof behind the idea that the game actually draws interest.
What is your point? That UAB is equivalent to scheduling a McNeese State? Okay that is fine but this is not our marquee game. So, if I had to choose between scheduling UAB or McNeese State then I would choose UAB 100 out of 100 times. I believe most fans would feel that way. Obviously, we are going to have "down games" so we might there is literally no harm in putting a UAB on the schedule as opposed to Milwaukee or someone else like that...
The point is that you can talk all freaking day about the difference between UAB and McNeese, but the actual attendance numbers don't back up what that difference supposedly means to you.

Only during his last two years. Prior to that we had good crowds for lesser opponents but not in the 15,000 range. Our average attendance the two years before the run to the title game were 14,866 and 14,654.

Yep. I would prefer UAB to other nameless teams. Atleast we have some history with UAB.

That's still pretty good. I rather play UAB with our little history than other unknown teams. I have faith that Penny will bring the crowd back.

F them. We gain nothing from playing them. Not a rival and we've owned their ass for a while. We shouldn't play UAB in any sport, ever again.
I agree, rival my @ss. I couldn't care less about playing UAB in any sport, not worth it. And who cares whether or not they bring fans, hell they don't even draw in B'Ham so they sure won't bring many here. Doesn't matter anyway, fixing to be old school around here, where Tiger b'ball tickets will once again be hard to come by.

When the season got going and we saw it was a very competitive team the numbers increased. But there was no 15,000 for the minor teams to start the season

So, then why the uproar about replacing McNeese State like teams with UAB?
Better than pure buy games. Will generate a little more interest.
Just two weeks ago the was overwhelming increase based on Penny hire alone. Combination of that and a better than a 300 RPI buy game should be a good thing. Overall I like it over that, not over playing a Higher profile.

I would rather have McNeese State. We don't have to give them a return game.

Shouldn't give one to UAB either. You want to play us, fine, we'll do it at FEF only with no return game, take it or leave it. If they don't want it under those terms, fine, tell em to take a hike.

Memphis and UAB are renewing their home-and-home series, per a source. Next season's game will be at FedEx Forum, 19-20 at UAB.
I could not possibly care less about renewing the series. Other than Pierre Niles slapping that UAB fan, it was a rather unmemorable series where Memphis has a 37-11 lead.

The irony of the comment by the announcer when talking about Tigers FT shooting in the game. That it will come back to bite the Tigers in the tournament.
I heard that and it turned my stomach!
If I remember correctly ESPN was so excited that it thought Memphis was going to lose that it put Memphis had lost on it's scroll before the game was over.
Meh. If it were a replacement for some home buy games, I'd be all for it. It was one of the more exciting early season home games 2 years ago. Not a big fan of the home-home with them though.
