It's not like UAB is any good, brings anyone here, or Memphis fans go to Birmingham for that game.
UAB loses their leading scorer and two other guys in their top 5 from a mediocre CUSA level team. Awesome.
People wax all nostalgic about these "local rivalries" with c-level programs but there is strong evidence (attendance, tv ratings, etc) that the VAST majority of folks don't care.
Plus, they are in the Advocare Invitational (along with LSU). Two chances to have repeat games in the OOC schedule. Weird.
edit: Upon further review, UAB is losing four starters.
I'm pretty sure we do this because Gene Bartow meant quite a bit to both programs.
Or are you just needling Memphis Blazer?
Huh?
That was 40 years ago. No one goes to a basketball game BECAUSE they shared a head coach. He stepped down from UAB 22 years ago.
Silly.
People in Memphis seem pretty excited about a player who played for Memphis 24 years ago who just became coach.
Ok?
And people DON'T seem excited to go to a game vs. a team that isn't a "rival", doesn't add anything of value to the OOC schedule, will be an RPI drag, doesn't travel, and, frankly, most folks 25 and under can barely connect the dots with Bartow, Memphis, and UAB.

I thought we were going to lose for sure at that point and then AA and CDR happened. It was unreal
Then an all out brawl almost broke out between UAB fans and Memphis players

The irony of the comment by the announcer when talking about Tigers FT shooting in the game. That it will come back to bite the Tigers in the tournament.

I'd rather just play some team you can foresee being good.
SIU will be good next year. Three hours away, they will travel a bit just because Memphis>Carbondale. College students aren't going to leave Birmingham to go to Memphis, or vice versa. They essentially have the same stuff.
Western Ky.
ETSU
MTSU
Belmont
Loyola, Chicago
Hell ALL these schools would jump at the chance for a home and home and likely accept a 2 for 1.
It's easy to look at rosters right now, see how a team did, see who they are losing, and figure out if they should be a solid team.
SIU, 20 wins this year, 2nd in MVC. Return all five starters. Should be good.
UAB, 6th in CUSA. Lose four starters including 16 ppg leading scorer. Should be NOT good.
I feel it is vitally important to hold on to any rivalries we have. Maybe in a few years the AAC will have ample ones, but as of right now it is pretty barren. I value the small things that differentiate college athletics and I think games like this are part of that. I understand also that we have moved on a fair bit from UAB, but think about from their point of view. If we are talking about a bigger draw from Memphis fans, perhaps its not there. But it builds tradition, and they could travel better than a fair amount of schools we could schedule.

Huh?
They have four 3* ranked 219, 239, 281, and 321.
They only have four returning players who played and real time and only return 40% of their scoring--from a team that was 6th in CUSA.
But, yeah.

saluki, calm down turbo. We get it - you don't like UAB on the schedule ...
some folks, like me, like it. Not getting into specifics, but I would rather have them on the schedule than a damn McNeese St. ... why? Because I know who and what UAB is - especially since the turn of this century, since we were ex-conference mates.
