Memphis/UAB renewed
Here next year, there in 2020

@JonRothstein
Memphis and UAB are renewing their home-and-home series, per a source. Next season's game will be at FedEx Forum, 19-20 at UAB.

Both teams are not where they were. That being said it was a great rivalry. Hopefully both teams can get back to where they were.

a nice deal when you are recruiting Trendon Watford. If he became a Tiger he'd get to play in his hometown during his freshman year.

Greatest game or ending at least of the series was the 2008 game at UAB and Robert Vaden

Down 77-70 with 1:27 left

I thought we were going to lose for sure at that point and then AA and CDR happened. It was unreal

Then an all out brawl almost broke out between UAB fans and Memphis players

Quote:1:43. Derrick Rose Offensive Rebound. 70 - 77
1:27 Antonio Anderson made Three Point Jumper. 73 - 77
1:22 Memphis Full Timeout. 73 - 77
0:55 Lawrence Kinnard missed Two Point Jumper. 73 77
0:55 Joey Dorsey Defensive Rebound. 73 - 77
0:39 Chris Douglas-Roberts made Three Point Jumper. Assisted by Derrick Rose. 76 - 77
0:38 Memphis Full Timeout. 76 - 77
0:15 Foul on Antonio Anderson 76 - 77
0:15 Robert Vaden missed Free Throw. 76 - 77
0:15 null 76 - 77
0:15 Robert Vaden made Free Throw. 76 - 78
0:07 Chris Douglas-Roberts made Free Throw. 77 - 78
0:07 Chris Douglas-Roberts made Two Point Jumper. 79 - 78
0:07 Foul on Robert Vaden 79 - 78
0:00 End Game 79 - 78

Memphis just 12-22 from the free throw line, "that will cost you come tournament time"... 03-puke

Ryan Boyce will be going up against some his former high school coach and some former teammates.

Possible that Jamal Johnson might be going up against some former teammates as well.

What? Are we really going to let UAB come in here and play so they can recruit Memphis kids?!

I like this series, glad to have it.

Who really cares?

It's not like UAB is any good, brings anyone here, or Memphis fans go to Birmingham for that game.

UAB loses their leading scorer and two other guys in their top 5 from a mediocre CUSA level team. Awesome.

People wax all nostalgic about these "local rivalries" with c-level programs but there is strong evidence (attendance, tv ratings, etc) that the VAST majority of folks don't care.

Plus, they are in the Advocare Invitational (along with LSU). Two chances to have repeat games in the OOC schedule. Weird.

edit: Upon further review, UAB is losing four starters.

WUT?

UAB snapped a 16 game losing streak last year.

Thanks Tubby.

I'm pretty sure we do this because Gene Bartow meant quite a bit to both programs.

Or are you just needling Memphis Blazer?

Huh?

That was 40 years ago. No one goes to a basketball game BECAUSE they shared a head coach. He stepped down from UAB 22 years ago.

Silly.

I like it. We should name it the “Gene Bartow Classic” and tie it into fund raising for cancer research.

I don’t view it as a rivalry. They’ve beaten us once in 13 years.

But I hate uab so there is that.

Yeah, since the 2000 season, UAB is 4-23 vs. Memphis.

The last time at the FEF, the UAB game drew 400 more fans than the McNeese State game did.

People in Memphis seem pretty excited about a player who played for Memphis 24 years ago who just became coach.
