I assumed as much.

Let's get it.

Hope springs eternal.

Hope we get rid of Tubby and hope we get Penny.

ETSU lost to UNCG last night, 62-47. I was impressed with UNCG and their coach Wes Miller. He is young, aggressive, and hungry and yet has some accomplishments and experience. We should consider evaluating him for Tiger Head Coach upon vacancy.

A guy with zero college or pro coaching experience. That is a train wreck waiting to happen. After the fans crucified Finch, does Penny really want the same thing to happen to him?

He sorta reminds me of Pastner. But he's winning.

He shares youth with Pastner (when he was hired), but little else that I can see now. His demeanor, for example, is very different from Pastner as is proof that Miller can recruit at a high level like Pastner.

Names?

Keeping in mind they would have to be affordable as we pay off another coach.
Agreeable to coming into a program which has run off 2 coaches in 3 years - including one well-respected.
Willing to take on a rebuild.
Under the radar - as we're in no position to get in a bidding war with the power conferences.

I am open to other possibilities - been saying Majerle for years. But let's be real.

Well we've gone from one extreme to another. Too young, inexperience 3rd assistant to too old, game passed by, over the hill grumpy grandpa.

How about something in the middle? A current mid-major D1 head coach with 4-8 years of head coaching experience who is dynamic, energetic, and been successful in building that level of program. Would prefer the program to be located in a major urban area in the southeast so that there would be that parallel. Current salary under $800,000 (probably actually in the $300k to $600k range so that a starting salary of $800k to $1,000,000 a year will represent a tidy little raise.

Forbes immediately comes to mind. MTSU Coach worth a look. There's two and I didn't even leave the state of Tennessee.

Saying there are a dozen viable choices is probably an undersell.

I know the love affair with Forbes here. He does seem to fit the bill. Except for the show cause on his resume - not sure if that's a deal breaker these days or not. He won't energize the fan base from day 1. It will be a slower process to get fans back. But it's possible. If we don't have to outbid other P5's to get him.

Kermit? No thanks. He's having some success at MTSU...now. But it's been a slow build. No way we have the patience for a similar 10-year plan. Plus, he's not really the up-comer and 56 years old.

So you have one possible - and the most obvious. Who are the other 11+? As I said, I'm open - but want to keep it real.

Do you ever do your own work or do you sit back demand others do the heavy lifting? You need to get out more.

TIER A: (In no particular order)

Steve Forbes - ETSU
Eric Musselman - Nevada
Danny Hurley – Rhode Island
Marvin Menzies – UNLV
Chris Jans – New Mexico State
Leon Rice – Boise State

TIER B: (In no particular order)

Damon Stoudamire - Pacific (I hesitated to put him here but.....)
Dan Majerle – Grand Canyon
Earl Grant – College of Charleston
Rodney Terry – Fresno State
Pat Kelsey – Winthrop
Lamont Smith – San Diego
Matt McCall – UMass
Allen Edwards – Wyoming
Matt McMahon – Murray State

TIER C: (Would really not like to get here)

Andy Kennedy – Available!
Anthony Grant - Dayton
Jeff Capel – Duke assistant
Darris Nichols – Florida assistant
Tommy Lloyd – Gonzaga assistant
Travis Steele – Xavier assistant
Ron Sanchez – Virginia assistant

WILDCARDS:

Tom Crean
Bruce Pearl

There are certainly plenty of others if you really want to roll up your sleeves and go to work.

Oh, and with all the built in advantages at Memphis Kermit could probably work a little quicker especially since he's already built a solid winning reputation now.....

I'd put Dan Majerle in Tier A.

Great player who was tough as nails on the floor (watched him play at Central Michigan for two years), has solid NBA connections, and winning at GCU. I would be beyond thrilled to see him on the Tigers bench.

Next season, whoever we bring in, will at least have a fighting chance of a decent season with our JUCO heavy roster.

If we wait another year, we will be bringing in a coach with an absolutely imploded roster. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It also makes the job much less desirable. At least we have some pieces in place that can be complimented by someone with a sustainable recruiting plan.

Also, we can get a jump on the coaching carousel that may happen if/when the FBI investigation goes public.

The Forum will be EMPTY next year if he is retained.

Strike while the iron is hot!

Do you have $10 million hanging around to cover the buy out?

Wrong question. Tubby's salary is covered. It's the money for the new coach you're looking for........

Lol...Thats too funny.

That is like saying If you have a house and want a new house that you just have to find money to buy a new house.

We have finite resources and they may find the money to make it happen but it may be a difficult pill to swallow.

That is like saying If you have a house and want a new house that you just have to find money to buy a new house.

We have finite resources and they may find the money to make it happen but it may be a difficult pill to swallow.

It is more like owning a house and knowing that it has lost half of its value in 2 years, and will continue to lose value if no renovations and repairs are done. The structure of the house, its location, and its original value allow you to predict that its value will double if you make all the necessary changes. Basically, Rudd and Bowen can convincingly tell the boosters that every $1 that goes toward the hiring of a new coach will bring $3 in additional revenue.

Rudd and Bowen need to convince the boosters to pony up. The difference to the school's bottom line is in the 10's of millions of dollars, at least.

Another thing about boosters. They like having nice things and they also have pride. They might not feel like shelling out the money, but people know who they are, and I'm sure they don't feel good about the product being put out on the floor.

I don't think Matta can stand for any length of time. His last season, they had to bring a chair out on the court for practice and he coached from it. Not sure he's up to the rigors.

lol, feisty. You haven't paid attention to my posts, if you think I don't bring research. The challenge was to you because you made the "dozen" remark with absolutely no insight to where that was coming from. But it's fine.

Realistically, other than 2 guys, Tier 1 is out of reach. When they make their next move, it will not be to a situation like ours where we can't pay top dollar for a rebuild with high expectations.

Tier 3, no thanks to any other than Capel, and he probably would not come.

That leaves us with Tier 2. Interesting names and I could see and support most of them. But the question is, do they bring more to the table than Penny does? They bring SOME track record. But limited ties to the area, and no proven winners at high level D1.

I just don't see a dozen absolutely, fool-proof better options and I feel Penny is who we need at this time.
