So Democrats ... you eeked out a 1% victory in Alabama:
- Over a child molester.
- With 12 million in out of state money.
- With a candidate that claims to throw overboard overboard major parts of the Democrat agenda. The only places he stands firmly in camp D is global warming, healthcare, living wage, and abortion. He is firmly NOT in camp D on global trade and the 2nd amendment.
That's a LOT of stars aligning ... for the narrowest of victories.
I'm interested in seeing whether Doug Jones votes for himself or if he votes for Chuck Schumer. Because the last chance the Democrats had to show they have IDEOLOGICAL tolerance was Joe Manchin. And they've pretty much ruined Joe Manchin. Joe left the Governor's office in West Virginia with a 70% approval rating. He has so far been lock stop with Schumer with the rubber meets the road. His approval rating has been destroyed as a result. He is now just 4 points up against "Generic Republican" in polling ( https://www.peoplespunditdaily.com/polls...oval-high/ ). Manchin is probably going to get his *** handed to him next year as a result.
So ... will Democrats try to sew seeds of moderation and ideological diversity? Or will they sell the farm to get what they can in 6 years? Because I can assure you if they do, it will be the biggest landslide defeat of an incumbent in the US Senate in quite some time if they do. Based upon what I've seen and heard of Doug Jones so far, if I had to bet I'd go with "another Schumer soldier".
Your logic is flawed:
Democrats don't win in Alabama. Democrats will never win in Alabama. Democrats will not keep the seat in 2020
None of that has anything to do with the 2018 Midterms, and the 2020 Presidential election. For years its been almost impossible for a republican to lose Alabama. What this year proved is that if they can come up with a candidate reprehensible enough, it can happen.

One percent would be a talking point if this wasn't Alabama. You know this. A one point win here is almost like a ten point win everywhere else. It's like electing a republican in California or Chicago. I'm perfectly willing to vote for a republican, but some here think voting for a dim is a sin.
Yeah. This is like Vanderbilt coming to Tuscaloosa and winning by one. Alabama is geared to elect a Republican under almost any circumstance (even an accused teeny groper stood a fantastic chance to win). Any win against them is big.
Not buying that at all in this context.
The involvement of accusations against a child has a major impact on voters. Its disingenuous to suggest this was business as usual.

It’s important in its immediate effect, a move closer to parity of party control in the Senate.
It’s no shift in political momentum or attitude.

If Doug Jones were to actually vote as a bipartisan moderate would he still lose the race? Probably. But it would also make enormous inroads into future campaigns for the Democrats. You don't dig yourself out of a hole that deep in just one cycle but you have to first decide to stop digging. If Doug Jones plays Schumer Yes Man, then no Democrat may ever win a senate seat in Alabama again. Because it is difficult to imagine a more favorable election for the Democrats than this.

The reality is that the Democratic party doesn't need Jones to play moderate when he's in Washington because they aren't counting on him winning his seat. Nor do they really need him to honestly.
This doesn't change 2020 when the Democrats come up with a person to run against Trump and that person barely visits Alabama because they know there is zero chance to win. What the democrats have to figure out from this, is did the large turnout in urban areas (For a special election) come because they all hated Moore, or because they were voting against Trump.
There's not much they can do about the former, but if its the latter, there are things they can do before 2020 to capitalize.

Oh it wasn't business as usual at all. But even with all that, Alabama was fully capable of voting Moore in.

Somebody can feel free to bookmark this and bring it back up in the election of 2020:. If Doug Jones votes like a Yes Man for Chuck Schumer he will lose reelection by more than 30%.

Bookmark it. It will happen. He is a 3 year senator that more that 70% of the state will despise. Plus Alabama claims the moral high ground.

I think the anti Trump factor would have made it closer than expected. The fact Moore was a terrible candidate gave the dems a chance to win and they took advantage of it

I think the anti Trump factor would have made it closer than expected. The fact Moore was a terrible candidate gave the dems a chance to win and they took advantage of it
That's where I sit, but that anti trump group is important because in the rest of the country, the margin between republicans and democrats is much smaller, and even a few can have a significant impact
Doug Jones doesn't need to win re-election. He just needed to win this election.

Somebody can feel free to bookmark this and bring it back up in the election of 2020:. If Doug Jones votes like a Yes Man for Chuck Schumer he will lose reelection by more than 30%.

And if he votes like a moderate and crosses the aisle to work with Republicans, he will lose by 10%. It’s Alabama. It’s the reddest of the red. Dems are freerolling with this seat until 2020.

And losing by 10% as a democrat in Alabama for US Senate is progress believe it or not. If for example the Republican who wins turns out to be a RINO dud, the skids would be greased for Doug Jones to run again and have a legitimate shot to win or at least provide the groundwork for some future moderate candidate to win. But as long as the Democratic party treats Alabama as disposable the Democratic party will be disposed of in Alabama.

And by the way the same logic applies to the Republicans refusing to run Libertarians or moderates in blue states. Jim DeMint and Rand Paul have been calling for years for the Republicans to run more libertarian candidates in blue states. I believe Jim DeMint's words were that he can declare a truce on social issues but the hour for debate over fiscal issues is growing late.

Democrats don’t have an opportunity. Doug Jones has an opportunity. Democrats will do everything they can to deny him that opportunity.

One seat matters a lot, particularly when its the dems in the majority.
When the Repubs are in the majority in the congress, its always more about the battle within their own party. There is no doubt they are in better position with the extra seat, but given their track record everything they pass is still going to come down to an inside the party fight.

He had to run as a moderate Republican to have a chance at winning, but that’s now over with.
He’s a one term guy, and he knows it. He will not be loyal to Alabama.
It’s very bad news for Trump’s agenda.
Agree. With all the out of state money he used, he owes a lot of people.

Scott Brown won a senate seat... Ted Kennedy's... in Massachusetts while promising to be the vote against Obamacare. I fully expect the democrats to win both houses next year.
