Democrats have an opportunity. Will they squander it?
There use to be yellow dogs and blue dogs and moderates in the Democratic Party. They were wiped out and made extinct by their vote for ObamaCare in the 2010 midterm. They haven't been back in the South -- save gerrymandered districts -- since.

So Democrats ... you eeked out a 1% victory in Alabama:
- Over a child molester.
- With 12 million in out of state money.
- With a candidate that claims to throw overboard overboard major parts of the Democrat agenda. The only places he stands firmly in camp D is global warming, healthcare, living wage, and abortion. He is firmly NOT in camp D on global trade and the 2nd amendment.

That's a LOT of stars aligning ... for the narrowest of victories.

I'm interested in seeing whether Doug Jones votes for himself or if he votes for Chuck Schumer. Because the last chance the Democrats had to show they have IDEOLOGICAL tolerance was Joe Manchin. And they've pretty much ruined Joe Manchin. Joe left the Governor's office in West Virginia with a 70% approval rating. He has so far been lock stop with Schumer with the rubber meets the road. His approval rating has been destroyed as a result. He is now just 4 points up against "Generic Republican" in polling ( https://www.peoplespunditdaily.com/polls...oval-high/ ). Manchin is probably going to get his *** handed to him next year as a result.

So ... will Democrats try to sew seeds of moderation and ideological diversity? Or will they sell the farm to get what they can in 6 years? Because I can assure you if they do, it will be the biggest landslide defeat of an incumbent in the US Senate in quite some time if they do. Based upon what I've seen and heard of Doug Jones so far, if I had to bet I'd go with "another Schumer soldier".

I believe Jones will fall right in line with the ideological extreme of the Democratic Party. I say that because that is who he is.

He had to run as a moderate Republican to have a chance at winning, but that’s now over with.

He’s a one term guy, and he knows it. He will not be loyal to Alabama.

It’s very bad news for Trump’s agenda.

You have summed why conservatives don't trust moderate dems.

I wish dems would allow blue dogs and their like back into the party. My congressman until 2010 was Mike McIntyre a blue dog dem. More people like him would really help unity the nation instead of the political "come together " speak dems use when they want conservatives to cave.

Instead dems run customized local dems in a nice moderate wrapping who then vote no different than a Massachusetts or California dem

Manchin voted yes on several Trump Cabinet appointees that pretty much every other Democrat said no to (most notably Jeff Sessions and Scott Pruitt).

I actually think more and more politicians will go against their party and vote their conscience in the future (Jeff Flake, John McCain, etc.)

Dude, they just lost a Senate Seat in Alabama. After Trump went down here and campaigned for Moore, and recorded robocalls for Moore...

Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama).

Democrats were starved for a win. If they think the whole face of politics just changed with a one point win over an accused child molester, well, good luck with that.

One percent would be a talking point if this wasn't Alabama. You know this. A one point win here is almost like a ten point win everywhere else. It's like electing a republican in California or Chicago. I'm perfectly willing to vote for a republican, but some here think voting for a dim is a sin.

They beat a child molester by 1 parcent. Not a ringing endorsement.

The dems through every penny and every resource they had into this race (including Obama) and still could only muster the tiniest of margins over a disgraced and accused child molester.

Hardly a good sign for the dems imo.

Roy Moore was a laughably bad candidate, sure. This wasn’t Nevada or Colorado though. No matter how much you want to pretend this isn’t a big deal, a Democrat win in a deep red state is huge. Trump stumping for this guy and losing is huge. Doesn’t mean the “whole face of politics changed”, but it’s a big deal.

I just don't see it at all.

They struggled bad to beat a disgraced candidate accused of child molestation.

This should have been a slam dunk for Jones, even in Alabama.

Yeah. This is like Vanderbilt coming to Tuscaloosa and winning by one. Alabama is geared to elect a Republican under almost any circumstance (even an accused teeny groper stood a fantastic chance to win). Any win against them is big.

When do we get to start blaming Russia?

Or are conservatives the only ones that will admit they ran a bad candidate?

In this analogy Alabama would have to be without their entire first string due to academic ineligibility.
