We want them back. It's possible. Your team, never. It would be the equivalent of the walking dead if we were in the same conference. Total apocalypse.

UC fans know that feeling... I would give a lot to see us back in a power/BCS conference. I had no idea how quickly things can fall apart.

Most of the nostalgia is for 3 schools. Schedule each other in OOC. Especially if it helps attendance for all of the schools involved.

Um yeah, they don’t want to play North Texas because of lack of brand appeal.

ECU needs to get off her butt and schedule USM. We need home for home football and basketball series. Southern Miss has been a great friend and it would be fun to renew the series.

Access to the BCS and, now, the playoffs makes the difference. Virginia Tech, when Syracuse, Boston College, and Miami were offered ACC membership, stopped all construction projects and froze their athletic department until the school secured their spot in the ACC.

There is no reason schools like East Carolina, Cincinnati, and Houston shouldn't be able to compete on the highest level.

I agree, and since Compher can't seem to get us any so-called P5 schools, you'd think getting USM on the schedule would be right up his alley. Unless, that is, he just doesn't get ECU culture.

I understand his anger. USM used to share a conference with programs that their fans cared about and the level of competition was much higher than it was today. Instead of ECU, Houston, UCF, and Memphis they are now playing Old Dominion, Charlotte, and WKU. Most people don't even realize that ODU and Charlotte play FBS football.

Our attendance is down, fan support is down, apathy is high...I think it has a lot to do with our current opponents. I know it shouldn't matter but our fans/big money donors just do not care about any of the teams on our schedule anymore. Its sad and depressing. Again, sorry for the pity post...sometimes it feels good to vent to old friends. I still can't get over the current state of USM athletics. I know we are our own worst enemy. The good news is the dinosaurs (school president, administrators, officials, coaches, and even our long time city mayor) who ALL contributed to the status that USM is currently in have died out...they've retired, resigned, fired/voted out all over the past 7 years. For the first time in 15 years our school is finally becoming somewhat stable. College realignment really happened at THE worst time possible for USM. Football has slowly somewhat recovered from the Ellis Johnson debacle of 2012. The Donnie Tyndall sanctions are officially over. I honestly think that if we are to ever get invited to the AAC, it'll only happen if we have a lot of success and proven investment in basketball (in addition to winning bowl games, conf/div championships in football) but I totally understand why y'all wouldn't want us. Anyways, I know this is a random post but again, I just needed to vent.

On a side note maybe we'll see each other in a bowl game in a month or so. I've seen a few projections showing USM playing Houston, Memphis, and USF though I'm sure y'all would prefer playing someone in a P5 conference (I don't blame y'all). Cheers!

I sent the same note to Louisville, Rutgers, and WV.

Personally, I miss the Big East, especially in basketball season. Even BE 2.0 was a solid football conference -- the biggest gripe was that it took a special run for a Big East school not named Miami to play for a national championship, and secondary was that teams not named WVU didn't travel particularly well. It was AQ worthy.

Once Temple really decided to support football and got its act back together, they should have been invited back, even for a football only membership (and the conference should not have pursued Villanova, they really just weren't interested).

We fit the academic profile of a Big 10 school (and could be a third participant in the Land Grant trophy with MSU and State Penn) but the only school we had a history with in the Big 10 is State Penn. It will take a while to develop anything there.

Unfortunately the Lambert schools are spread across 4 conferences and the Eastern conference idea had sailed. Once the Big East decided to nix the contract ESPN offered, the writing was on the wall.

The UConn football series was a good one through the 70s up to the 1A/1AA split, we played Temple pretty evenly throughout the series (even being horrible at the same time 01-lauramac2) and finally were playing competitively with Pitt and Syracuse.

It will take time for the American to gel as a conference. If there's no movement above, the conference could be a good one (similar to the Metro super conference for football). But we only had any history with Temple, Navy, UConn and Cincinnati, and that's only 1/3 of the conference.

Exactly. ODU and Charlotte as well as North Texas, La Tech and WKU do not turn heads nor pay the bills for USM.

I know what you mean. Memphis is having one of the best runs in football in school history but attendance is mediocre. Unless we're playing an SEC school or Louisville, people really don't care.

TOGC, sometimes I think you post crap like this just to get attention. Take away the rain and storm games we've had this year, our average attendance (butts in seats) would be in the 45,000 range. If we played in the stadiums our conference mates play in (except Temple and USF) every one of our games would be standing room only, Liberty Bowl with a capacity of right at 60,000, not the case. Our game this Saturday against SMU (guess what, not a $EC school) is expected to draw the biggest crowd of the year, between 46-50,000 based on tickets sold and good weather (per our athletic dept.). Now with the weather forecasts predicting rain and thunderstorms thru out the day, it'll be a much smaller crowd than predicted. The weather God's have not been kind to the Tigers this year. But to say that the people in Memphis really don't care is a wrong and stupid comment. I'll be at the game Saturday, will you?

I thought Charlotte dropped football years ago. When did they bring football back and are they in the Sun Belt or CUSA?
