State of Illinois football
Not to activate Redbird nation but I was perusing Massey's own rankings that incorporate all college football teams regardless of division, and here is how the state of Illinois stacks up. What jumped out at me is that we have some good FCS programs in this state that rank in the top 100 nationally. I guess the bummer is the state of Illinois does not have a top 40 team.

#48 Northwetsern
#71 Illinois
#74 Northern Illinois
#84 Western Illinois
#93 Illinois State
#122 Southern Illinois
#168 Eastern Illinois

So essentially every Illinois team listed except EIU is playing football at an FBS level right now (with the exception of EIU who is outside the top 130). Pretty impressive.

Northwestern and Illinois ahead of NIU is laughable. Classic Massey really.

Im not sure I disagree too much, I think Northwestern might be a little high in the upper 40s but placing Illinois and NIU at about the same spot seems about right to me. With NIU not really having an offense, it does place an upper limit on any objective ranking system right now. Illinois beat Ball State and WKU which is not awful team, they were beat pretty bad by USF but a lot of teams are going to have problems @USF. If NIU ever finds any kind of an offense, these rankings will switch big time.

Today Iilini host a common opponent NU, it will be interesting to assess the rankings next week.

So #74 plays against #19?
A 55 ranked differential?
Really?
Why is #19 only favored to win by 11?
I am hoping that NIU moves ahead 20 spots after Saturday night.

Because there is no direct correlation between ranking differential and points scored. Weather, home field, a lucky bounce, bad officiating, momentum, injuries, etc., are not factors associated with a ranking, but they can impact scoring.
In the event the Huskies lose, are you expecting NIU to drop 20 spots?

I don't look at rankings (haven't for 20 years)...I look at your record and who you played. Rankings are for rookies.

Wrong? Its a ranking system based on whats occurred, and a pretty good one at that. Couple of points here. First off, don't we always mention this every year, how the transitive property in sports does not work? I am not saying NIU is not better than Illinois, but for instance is the fact Baylor lost to Liberty by 3 points and lost to Oklahoma by 8 points mean that Oklahoma would be 5 point favorites against Liberty? I think Oklahoma is probably substantially better than Liberty than the 5 points. Secondly, I was not intending to make a direct comparison between NIU and Illinois, when they are ranked that close together with this small of a sample size on the season , it probably is foolish to say. Third point, do not use the transitive property in this way either, I like a ranking system, and thus you must hate the ranking system because you hate whatever I like and vice versa. Final point, Massey is doing something right with this system because almost to a T, the initial point spread for games is within 2 points plus or minus his differential in the game. For example right now I can tell with 100 percent confidence the NIU/Kent point spread will open somewhere close to NIU -21, or using my 2 point fudge factor -19 to -23. I think you take your hats off to someone when they can construct a system that does that.

Everyone in the Big Ten looks good when playing Illinois football. Nebraska has beat the two worst teams in their conference. Let's see how they fare against the good teams.

The Rockford register star has all but forgotten NIU football. All they posted online at least after the Nebraska win was an AP article. They used to do a really good job

Huskies have to give them something to write about on a more consistent level. Win, and win a lot.

Isn't that what NIU has been doing, with the exception of last year?

2015 and on has been rough. Don't pick specs out of fly **** here. We need to win more, and YES folks, bowl games count. I would argue bowl games are what everyone remembers based on hype and new fun match ups. NIU does win, we need more and the games that count. Just my humble opinion.

Many newspapers are under financial distress and barely hanging on. This could be part of the reason for the reduced coverage. I have noticed that there is no longer anyone on the phones during Carey''s weekly press conferences.

Beating Nebraska is more than a flyspeck. If they can't talk about that they aren't going to talk about the results of a bowl game that ended at midnight on the west coast.
