RE: State of Illinois football
B1G wins are longer lasting than any MAC tie in bowl game. I bet 90% of the people on this board couldn't even tell you our last few bowl games and opponents. Newspapers are dying. They can pay someone pennies to write HS football stories and then just run AP stories for college/professional sports

Huskies have to give them something to write about on a more consistent level. Win, and win a lot.

Isn't that what NIU has been doing, with the exception of last year?

2015 and on has been rough. Don't pick specs out of fly **** here. We need to win more, and YES folks, bowl games count. I would argue bowl games are what everyone remembers based on hype and new fun match ups. NIU does win, we need more and the games that count. Just my humble opinion.

Beating Nebraska is more than a flyspeck. If they can't talk about that they aren't going to talk about the results of a bowl game that ended at midnight on the west coast.

People remember wins over name P5 programs and ranked G5 teams. It really doesn't matter if it's a bowl or regular season. Even more so if those teams have lots of tradition.

Wrong? Its a ranking system based on whats occurred, and a pretty good one at that. Couple of points here. First off, don't we always mention this every year, how the transitive property in sports does not work? I am not saying NIU is not better than Illinois, but for instance is the fact Baylor lost to Liberty by 3 points and lost to Oklahoma by 8 points mean that Oklahoma would be 5 point favorites against Liberty? I think Oklahoma is probably substantially better than Liberty than the 5 points. Secondly, I was not intending to make a direct comparison between NIU and Illinois, when they are ranked that close together with this small of a sample size on the season , it probably is foolish to say. Third point, do not use the transitive property in this way either, I like a ranking system, and thus you must hate the ranking system because you hate whatever I like and vice versa. Final point, Massey is doing something right with this system because almost to a T, the initial point spread for games is within 2 points plus or minus his differential in the game. For example right now I can tell with 100 percent confidence the NIU/Kent point spread will open somewhere close to NIU -21, or using my 2 point fudge factor -19 to -23. I think you take your hats off to someone when they can construct a system that does that.

Every body agrees it's worth writing about. It starts with winning, filling seats, and getting the Huskie Hum going. Most likely bigger than one or two variables why we don't get the exposure we used to or rightfully deserve. Beating NU is huge, as are the other teams we beat and picked not too. I never said flyspeck with regards to NU. We have to win games, most of them, and also the big games like FSU. We want to be the next Boise we have to win the big games, and to be frank, have to win our conference every year for a while. We took huge steps forward, have to take it further to be totally respected. Right now we are known to be dangerous and a risky team to play, (in a sub par conference) we have to become feared. Boise State has been feared. I love my Huskies and was on the field 30 years ago at NU, I know what that win meant to fans, players, and program. I am thinking bigger picture. I think growing our school's reputation is equally important and would help grow athletics. To me it's all correlated, but winning on a consistent basis is essential.

I guess I meant that we would have gotten better coverage for the Nebraska game in earlier years with a win like that, even if the team wasn't winning that many games.

In Rockford Il, perhaps the days of Newspaper -NIU FB coverage may have temporarily decreased greatly.

We have already entered a virtual age of internet coverage. The best fan metric might be fan coverage through the Internet(both live streaming watching, streaming after game and radio over the internet), old radio and Television.

NIU probably has more Internet aka 'invisible' fans then ever before.
NIU has over the past 15 years been arguedly the most consistent College FB program in Illinois. Interms of winning seasons, Bowl appearances, MAC West conference championships and Conference championships.

If u EPAsnoopy were an Illini fan you would be calling for Lovie Smith's head.

Secondly you under-estimate the strength of the Nebraska team.

Thirdly : They beat Nebraska and Michigan State last year.

A 55 ranked differential?
Really?
Why is #19 only favored to win by 11?
I am hoping that NIU moves ahead 20 spots after Saturday night.

Because there is no direct correlation between ranking differential and points scored. Weather, home field, a lucky bounce, bad officiating, momentum, injuries, etc., are not factors associated with a ranking, but they can impact scoring.
In the event the Huskies lose, are you expecting NIU to drop 20 spots?

No.

Tanner Lee feels like an Iowa QB, their approach on offensive which is fairly conservative feels like Iowa, somewhat stingy on defense like Iowa

In Rockford, more than care about NIU.
It boggles the mind that all the posters on here who brag about never buying let alone reading or caring what's in a newspaper, then can't understand the economics: less subscribers / less readers = fewer ads = less space = less coverage = less subscribers / readers = budget cuts in staff = less coverage = fewer ads = fewer pages and space = less coverage = less subscriber / readers = fewer newspapers = more cuts = fewer staff and on and on.
In the 80s, it wasn't unusual for NIU's press box to have writers from the Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Herald, Register-Star, Aurora Beacon-News, DeKalb Daily Chronicle, Elgin Courier-News, Dixon Telegraph. In addition to the Huskie Radio Network on flagship WLBK plus an NIU student radio station, there were also single representatives from smaller stations like WRHL. Every MAC school had at least one daily paper, a student paper, and maybe one other newspaper making the trip to DeKalb.
For those of you who missed the news, former President William Monat recently passed away. He was famous for telling people when he was first at NIU serving in the capacity of Provost, then sports information director Bud Nangle kicked him out of the press box because there was no room for university administrators. Monat backed Brigham in building the President's Box underneath the press box.
Ask Korcek what it used to be like. The first time Iowa basketball came to Evans, there were seven different stations broadcasting the game for Iowa, now there's one Hawkeye Network.
Don't expect to see anyone from the Rockford Register-Star unless: a) NIU runs the table to a big bowl, b) a kid from Rockford becomes a star player, or c) something bad happens.

Will any of the DeKalb bars and or other places be showing the game live?

I would have never wanted Lovie as a coach in the first place. He was a below average coach in the NFL. He's the same guy who stuck with Rex Grossman, who single-handily, lost them the super bowl with his fumble and interception issues.
