RE: 2017 Seahawk Summer Baseball Thread
Some notes thus far:
* Sophomore righty Breydan Gorham made his first start for the Wilmington Sharks on June 2nd and flashed some nice potential. In 4 innings of work he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking 2. He was able to locate his fastball well and pitched with confidence. Gorham received a no-decision in a 5-4 loss.
* Outfielder Kep Brown, who was a projected 1st round pick out of High School before injuries derailed his chances for at least a short period of time, made his way from Miami to Spartanburg Methodist, and is now signed with the Seahawks. He is, however, draft eligible this year. So far, he has struggled with the Sharks in the early going this Summer, starting 0-6 with 3 strikeouts.
* SS Austin LaFollette is off to a good start offensively for Holly Springs, batting 2-7 with a pair of RBI. He has, however, committed an error for the Salamanders in his first 3 chances in the field. With Kennard McDowell gone and sophomore Cole Weiss penciled in as the starter at shortstop in 2018, it would be nice if LaFollette can provide depth at the position going forward.
* Incoming freshman outfielder Noah Liles already has 26 plate appearances with the North Wake Fungo, and is hitting a healthy .261. He's also flashing a lot of speed with 4 stolen bases, tied for 6th most in the Carolina-Virginia league in the young season. He's also struck out 8 times, tied for 7th most, but that's to be expected out of a young hitter adjusting to the transition from High School to D-I baseball.
* Liles' teammate, OF Noah Bridges, another incoming freshman for the Seahawks, has also been heavily aggressive on the basepaths. He's reached base twice in 5 plate appearances and already racked up 3 stolen bases, meaning that on one instance he stole both second AND third. Evidently Fungo head coach Robert Dudley is giving his guys the green light to run wild, as yet another teammate, Wake Forest's Caleb Coyle, has 4 stolen bases as well.
