2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
Thus far, below are the Seahawks I've been able to locate on Summer Baseball rosters. Please post in this thread if you know of any others on rosters, and I'll update this post.

I'll also be keeping up with the progress of our players. Performance in Summer play has an impact on pre-season rankings and can also impact players' draft stock.

Cape Cod League

Clark Cota - Cotuit Kettleers

New England Collegiate League

Ryan Jeffers - Upper Valley Nighthawks
P/INF Blake Deatherage - Upper Valley Nighthawks

Coastal Plain League

Mason Berne - Wilmington Sharks
OF Kep Brown - Wilmington Sharks
Luke Gesell - Wilmington Sharks
RHP Breydan Gorham - Wilmington Sharks
SS Austin LaFollette - Holly Springs Salamanders

Carolina-Virginia League

INF Jackson Meadows - Kernersville Bulldogs
OF Noah Liles - North Wake Fungo
OF Noah Bridges - North Wake Fungo

RE: 2017 Seahawk Summer Baseball Thread
Some notes thus far:

* Sophomore righty Breydan Gorham made his first start for the Wilmington Sharks on June 2nd and flashed some nice potential. In 4 innings of work he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking 2. He was able to locate his fastball well and pitched with confidence. Gorham received a no-decision in a 5-4 loss.

* Outfielder Kep Brown, who was a projected 1st round pick out of High School before injuries derailed his chances for at least a short period of time, made his way from Miami to Spartanburg Methodist, and is now signed with the Seahawks. He is, however, draft eligible this year. So far, he has struggled with the Sharks in the early going this Summer, starting 0-6 with 3 strikeouts.

* SS Austin LaFollette is off to a good start offensively for Holly Springs, batting 2-7 with a pair of RBI. He has, however, committed an error for the Salamanders in his first 3 chances in the field. With Kennard McDowell gone and sophomore Cole Weiss penciled in as the starter at shortstop in 2018, it would be nice if LaFollette can provide depth at the position going forward.

* Incoming freshman outfielder Noah Liles already has 26 plate appearances with the North Wake Fungo, and is hitting a healthy .261. He's also flashing a lot of speed with 4 stolen bases, tied for 6th most in the Carolina-Virginia league in the young season. He's also struck out 8 times, tied for 7th most, but that's to be expected out of a young hitter adjusting to the transition from High School to D-I baseball.

* Liles' teammate, OF Noah Bridges, another incoming freshman for the Seahawks, has also been heavily aggressive on the basepaths. He's reached base twice in 5 plate appearances and already racked up 3 stolen bases, meaning that on one instance he stole both second AND third. Evidently Fungo head coach Robert Dudley is giving his guys the green light to run wild, as yet another teammate, Wake Forest's Caleb Coyle, has 4 stolen bases as well.

Something else I noticed last week:

http://www.wilmingtonsharks.com/team/roster

Former UNCW commit, Walker Imwalle, transferred to BCC last year & now seems to be committed to (Super Regional participant) Davidson.

I hear that the idea is, if we can work in another SS, then Weiss would move to third where he is most comfortable.

Imagine if Greg Jones opts to come to school. I'm hearing he's even faster than Linkous was. Which would be highly impressive given that Linkous was probably the fastest athlete in UNCW history, in any sport (even faster than Raynor).

As I understand it, there wasn't any playing time available so he took his talents over the bridge. Spose an opportunity became available in Charlotte some time between then & now.

2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
Luke Gesell (r-fr.) made his first start of the Summer for the Sharks last night, and looked sharp. He tossed 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and walking just 2.

He didn't get any K's against a middling Fayetteville squad, so he has some work to do on the swing-and-miss aspect. But he got outs, 11 of them on grounders, and that's what is important.

The Sharks lost, 2-1, so Gesell was unfortunately saddled with the loss (he is now 0-1).

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
Some updates:

* SS Austin LaFollette continues his strong play for Holly Springs in the CPL. He is now batting .294 (5-17) with a HR, 3 doubles, and 6 runs driven in. His .647 slugging % is 2nd on the team amongst players with at least 15 at bats. His defense has been strong as well, as he hasn't committed any errors in his last 3 contests after a miscue in the 3rd game of the summer.

* Ryan Jeffers if off to a hot start for the Upper Valley Nighthawks of the NECBL, going 6-11 (.556) with two doubles, 2 RBI and a stolen base. He's also thrown out a runner from behind the plate. Teammate Blake Deatherage has made an appearance out of the bullpen for the Nighthawks, throwing a scoreless inning and striking out 1. Deatherage is 0-4 at the plate.

* Incoming freshman OF Noah Liles continues to rack up stolen bases at a high rate for the 7-3 North Wake Fungo, as he now has 6 in 37 plate appearances to go along with his .273 batting average and .351 on base %. His teammate, OF Noah Bridges, meanwhile, has 5 SB's in 15 plate appearances, but is only hitting .214 with a .267 OBP.

* Mason Berne is no longer on the roster for the Sharks, for unknown reasons. Sometimes guys drop off of their summer rosters for a variety of different reasons, so it's likely not a big deal and not really worth speculating about. OF Kep Brown, meanwhile, is hitting a dismal .154 (2-13) for Wilmington. He'll wait to see if his name is called at some point during the MLB draft, which begins tonight at 6 and lasts until Wednesday.

* The Cape Cod season gets underway on Wednesday night. Cotuit will be facing Bourne in the opener, potentially providing Clark Cota (Cotuit Kettleers) with his first opportunity of the summer.

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
I realize a lot can still happen, but it appears that Kep Brown will be a Seahawk next year. Yesterday's article stated that he opted to move in with UNCW teammates rather than playing in the Cape, or living with a host family. That's great news! And, with two days of the draft in the books, if Jones ends up on campus, next year's freshman class (newcomers) will have an impact.

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
June 19th updates:

* The Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League have started their season 4-0, and Clark Cota has helped contribute to that perfect mark. In 2 appearances, he's totaled 3 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit, striking out 5 and walking one. He picked up a Save in the season opener on Wednesday, a 5-3 win over the Bourne Braves.

* In the NECBL, Blake Deatherage has now made 3 relief appearances for the Upper Valley Nighthawks, and has yet to allow a run. He's also struck out 5 and allowed just 4 baserunners (2 hits, 2 walks) in his 4 total innings of work.

* Among hitters with at least 20 at-bats, Austin LaFollette is 12th in the Coastal Plain League in batting average, at .381. In the same group, he is also 6th in Slugging, at .714. Granted, this is still a very small sample size, but the early returns continue to be awesome for the Holly Springs shortstop, who hopes to take the reins at the position for the Seahawks next season.

* Kep Brown is showing improvement for the Sharks, as in a matter of a week he improved his batting average from .154 to .263, and also has a HR.

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
Kep Brown is off the Sharks roster. He finishes his season hitting a sizzling .393 with a .536 slugging % in 28 AB's.

The final 2 Seahawks remaining on the roster are Luke Gesell and Breydan Gorham. The 2 hurlers each earned wins in their most recent outings.

Gesell (1-1) tossed 5 innings on Friday against a 13-8 Florence squad, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits, striking out 3 and walking 5. His ERA drops to 3.18. Gorham (2-1), meanwhile, pitched the "complete game" against 13-8 Peninsula. Doubleheader games are only 7 innings long in the CPL, and in game 1, Gorham led the Sharks to a 6-2 victory by allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2 over his 7 frames. He improves his ERA to 4.50.

The Sharks have now won 3 straight after starting the season 7-12.

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
2 additional updates:

* It seems somewhat clear that Blake Deatherage will be making his biggest impact with the Seahawks on the mound rather than at the plate, based on all available evidence from both last season with UNCW and in summer ball this year. While he is only hitting .188 at the plate, Deatherage made his 4th appearance of the season on Friday for Upper Valley in the NECBL, and threw 2 more scoreless innings, running his streak to 6 straight scoreless innings in relief. He did walk 2 batters, and now has given up 4 free passes, but he's also only allowed 2 hits and struck out 5. Thus, his WHIP with the Nighthawks is a solid 1.00 and his K/9 is 7.50.

* Ryan Jeffers, caught those 2 innings for both his Upper Valley and UNCW teammate. And he's been performing well in both the field and at the plate. He's recorded 8 assists in 8 games (I am unsure which of those were runners caught stealing) while hitting .302 at the plate. Jeffers is also 3rd on the team with 11 RBI, contributing heavily to the 11-5 Nighthawks. Given the departure of Casey Golden, Nick Feight, Brian Mims and Robbie Thorburn, Jeffers will be a crucial figure in the middle of the Seahawk lineup next season.

RE: 2017 Seahawks playing Summer Baseball Thread
Evidently Cole Weiss and Riley Zayicek are playing Summer ball in Canada for the Victoria HarbourCats, part of the West Coast League.

Thus far this season Weiss is hitting .289 with 1 HR, 3 RBI and 2 SB in 45 AB's for the 10-13 HarbourCats. He projects to be our starting third baseman in 2018, though he has also been getting work at 2B and of course SS with Victoria as well.

Zayicek is struggling a bit with contact, hitting .209 with 10 K's, but has shown power with 3 HR in his 43 AB's. Zayicek will most definitely be in the starting OF mix in 2018.
