His high school gf probably left him for a football player. Perhaps he could try his luck with one of the new "special" robots.

Just please remember that Dr. Bush speaks for only himself. I think this was a very bad look for him, but let's remember not to attack others based on his words. Now, please carry on with these insults. :)

Oh FFS! His baton must be permanently up his butt! If it weren't for sports, specifically in my case WBB and to a lesser extent softball, I would probably mostly ignore JMU as a traffic inconvenience most of the time. Of course, I'm not an alum, but athletics is a major way any school connects with its community and alumni.

But since he identifies himself as the Director of the School of Music (which he is) is he speaking only for himself or the entire department?

It does raise questions about how he (as head of School of Music) feels about the MRDs and Pep band, etc. They may not get the support they deserve with this attitude towards sports, and these groups are showcases and the "front porch" for the music school in many ways when it comes to the wider community.

Your statement highlights the issue. The public perception of the School of Music is that its raison d'existence is to create and support the marching and pep bands. It rubs the music faculty (and those who know better) the wrong way.

MRDs & Pep Band are honestly a fairly small part of the School of Music. Until recently, Pep Band could somewhat accurately described as under the Athletics umbrella...sorta. MRDs also receive a good chunk of funding from the University versus a part of the School of Music budget, I believe.

But Bush doesn't look good at all. And it doesn't help with perception when there's a negative correlation with SOM and his comment, despite his thoughts being personal opinions. His job is a little bit bigger & he has to consider that when making these statements.

Agreed. Dr. Bush's letter was ill-advised. I'm not sure what he thought it would accomplish or change.

RE: Pep Band Silenced
I grew up "under the desk" (faculty brat) at University of Wisconsin-Madison so I feel a little bit qualified to speak on this. We FBs were all aware, as were most of the kids in town, that UW-Madison had a fantastic school of music. We were also all very much aware of the UW Marching Band (in my childhood all male, now coed) and it was the pride of the city, the state, and the university...if not the school of music <g> There probably isn't anyone who's ever attended UW who doesn't feel a tear starting at the playing of "Varsity", the alma mater, or feel their heart race just a little as the band strikes up "On Wisconsin". So maybe Dr. Bush ought to look at what he wrote and walk it back....way back. Way, WAY back.
