Don't you think we know more about Robs ability starting out than we did about Haase. Its not reasonable that he is starting less. He was our #1 assistant for four years. Hasse was a 3rd ssst and JV coach.
Perhaps, but Haase had a greater volume of years as an assistant. I think Rob has the potential to be a great head coach, better than Haase, but from the Athletics Department point of view, you're trying to get the most bang for your buck. As the salary stands, UAB is receiving great value for its investment, and Ehsan is receiving $450K + the opportunity to be a head coach at 33. I believe both parties win here.
I agree. Also, if he's willing to take $450k you don't counter with "alright well how about $600k?"

I'm willing to bet it was "take it or leave it, we are interviewing others." or maybe Ehsan was able to talk them up to $450.

Bingo!
Great coach TBD. Bargain price. If he wins, we pay more.

First time in school history where the football coach makes more than the basketball coach?

No.
Garrick McGee made more than Haase when Haase was hired.

Don't bank on it. This is payback for forcing football to return. The message is: You want football? Then forget about basketball.

That's probably closer to the truth as when football went away, all those salary costs went over to bball staff w/ the big raise for Haase. Now we're seeing the flip side w/ football being back. If he has success & we want to keep him, we'll have to pony up out of our pockets. The Watzi's have a strict policy of $X limit in the budget for the whole dept & won't increase it, so anything over will have to come out of our pockets until they bleed us dry that we can give no more. Until they're gone, this university can't really move forward

I read a story on AL.com concerning the governor scandal and the Mason's. Quotes justifying payments to the Mason advertising campaign were justified by Bryant who I assume was cubby. Last time I checked he is a trustee emeritus which in my opinion would indicate Simone else should be responding. Maybe this scandal will break up the current trustee system and set us free.

RE: Per AL.Com :Coach Robert Ehsan's new contract, salary breakdown, incentives and more
We were told to raise $17M Dollars to balance the budget to bring football back. $17.2M Million+ was pledged and is being collected ahead of schedule. The normal budget + $17M Million included the $1M salary of Coach Haase. Now that they are only paying $450K to Ehsan... Where is the the $550K for the next 5 years going? That's $2.75M! We were told by our perfidious president that $17M was needed to make sure all programs were at or near to the top of C-USA with adequate facilities. Someone has some explaining to do?

Football will end up saving basketball. Watch ;-) brighter days are ahead of us.

Agreed. Hopefully we will be able to give Clark raises too

I see no issues with the salary amount. Falls in line with what previous coaches made with similar experience.
I would say though that if Ehsan has a great season next year I would bump up the salary some & reward him for it. (outside of the bonuses)

ICB, brings up a good point though. Where can we expect the difference in Haase and Ehsan's salary to be spent? For this year there's a difference of $400k in base salary from the University. IMO, it should stay with basketball and make sure the operational investments we made under Haase (chartering flights to away games, using a private jet for some recruiting, etc) stay in place.

The use of the private jet is a gift from the Lee family... I'm guessing that Coach Ehsan will get the same benefit.

LOL, and he was way overpaid. All this talk about experience reminds me of the fools who said McGee was a great assistant.
We're in a crappy conference with a coach with no experience. This salary is in line with C-USA. If we were in the ACC, I'd say 1 million would be the starting salary. If we were dominating C-USA like Memphis did in C-USA version 2, I'd pay the coach 1 million plus. This is C-USA, so I think the salary is fine.
