RE: Per AL.Com :Coach Robert Ehsan's new contract, salary breakdown, incentives and more
I think the salary is reasonable for where we are, and the market value for Ehsan. We wanted him, and I think he was a great hire, but the truth is, he didn't have head coaching options elsewhere. Haase, on the other hand, had a much greater value and better negotiating position coming from being an assistant for Williams at Kansas and NC.
I would agree that Ehsan is now a proven commodity, at least to us, but being an assistant at UAB vs. being an assistant at NC sure does change his value on the market. He really didn't have options, at least as a mid-major or higher head coach, and I'm sure Haase did, or would have soon. We are paying what the market dictates, and obviously he is getting a substantial raise from where he was as an assistant last year.
Had we hired someone away from another school, that in itself would have upped the ante. We didn't, and we get the better deal. And Ehsan benefits as well, because he gets a head coaching job he wouldn't have been able to get.
It's a win-win, and if he continues to win-win, I trust he will be compensated accordingly.

I surely wish $450K/year was a "low salary" in my world.

Haase initial salary was 450k

In that case, Ehsan is receiving a very fair contract.

The state legislature made the demarcation line for the 4% raise for Alabama public school teachers for 2016-2017 to be $75,000 (that's a total of 6% since 2007). Those above that line get only 2% raise. Chances are that Alabama's current Teacher of the Year makes less than $60,000, perhaps a lot less.

What does that have to do with anything discussed in this thread??
How can someone continue to make such asinine and unrelated comments after being called out so much for it??

I don't think Ehsan's deal was a bad one. If he balls out and is not compensated at a corresponding Haase level or better, then we are bush league.

RE: Per AL.Com :Coach Robert Ehsan's new contract, salary breakdown, incentives and more
Biggest worry would be for Ehsan to have a real good year in the upcoming season and get offers before the season ends. Offers too good to pass up before we can even put anything worthy enough together to keep him around. I don't think anybody believes Haase wasn't working on something with Stanford before the season ended.

Before he has won a single game... hell, before he has *coached* a single game, at that. I wonder if I go back and look at the coaching candidates thread how many of the people now saying we're not paying Ehsan enough were anti- or lukewarm about him then.

Its Business 101. Never pay a guy whis willing to start at $450k, more than $450k.
If, as a head coach, he proves to be worth $1M, then pay the man. TBD.
Paying Ehsan $1M now does absolutely nothing to improve UABs status, except give the internet addicts who troll other boards something to brag about.

I'm geniunely curious: what is the reason to pay a new employee more than he/she accepted in salary negotiations?
Now that I am a funding source of UAB athletics, I know that I would be extremely upset and calling Mark Ingram far worse than "Fumbles" to learn he'd said, "That's great, Rob, but here, take another $150,000 from 58-56 so I can swag more in front of the other CUSA ADs."
[insert standard rant that all college coaches are way overpaid, comparing to single mom making 7.25 cleaning toilets and slinging burgers on on-call hours]
