I'm very surprised as to how both ODU and UNCC stack up on that list. I figured both of us would be further down.
UAB and Southern Miss both have budgets much smaller that I had imagined.

RE: Conference Athletic Budgets
This raises some questions for me. With our budget being on the high end for G5 schools why are our major sports' coaches paid below average and why can't we afford to pay COA for all athletes when many others can? Do we need to cut some sports to be more competitive? This just doesn't add up. Our performance in men's and women's basketball and football is not reflective of the investment in our athletics program.

Again, the schools that we are compared to ALSO have FOOTBALL. Some have much smaller budgets. The question is why are we not seeing the benefits of that larger budget as it relates to COA and success of the revenue sports.

The questions that pique my curiosity – how can Memphis afford to pay Tubby Smith $3.09 million a year when their total budget is almost identical to ODU’s total budget, and why is it that ODU cannot afford to pay a similar salary for a head basketball coach?

EDIT: I suppose the best guess is that FED EX is paying for it.

+1 Those are my questions too. Why are the schools that are in the same range as us Memphis, Boise, USF, UCF and ECU able to pay good salaries while we are struggling to keep up with rest of the cusa.

Are they paying their coaches from another source totally outside their budget?

For example, Paul Hewitt at GMU was the highest payed State employee in Va. (outrageous for GMU) but he wasn't the highest paid coach.
Although Frank Beamer made more, not one cent was from state funds, but instead a donor based athletic fund. His salary then would not show up as a line item in any official budget.

I can see a Memphis having enough tradition and a fanbase that extends well beyond just alumni (like VT) to be able to do that, wholly or at least in part.

Holy crap. How does it cost $4Billion to run a university and I can only imagine ODU is not anywhere close to the top. No wonder people are riddled with debt for half their life. There has got to be an ungodly amount of waste in that.

Stuff costs money.

I wonder if the hundreds of millions ODU does in research is included with that figure. I'm fairly certain (no source) that that is a combo of University funds and grant money.

Stuff indeed costs money, but is it necessary? With the current atmosphere of outrage toward student debt, I find it astonishing that universities are spending this kind of money while leaving students less prepared for the market than ever and yet managing to not shoulder any of the blame for the student debt problem. People want to throw more money at universities to lower costs for students, but with budgets that large, I don't see any way that the government could throw them enough money to make a dent. Beyond that, with the way schools are spending now, it is hard to imagine that government money would go toward anything but expanding their already outsized budgets.

A closer look shows that the 4 billion dollar expenditures is a total for all of the universities (including 2 year colleges and community colleges) within the Commonwealth of Virginia. ODU's expenditures for the year in question were considerably less at 251M$.

Isn't the argument for having football is that, it + BB are the money makers that pay for the rest of the sports?

$4,172,369,827

That is INSANE to me.
In the Fall I will be taking a course with no instructor. It will be just online and somebody will grade stuff after the fact. I'll just be watching pre - recorded videos, or presentations or what ever they plan to do. And it's for a rather intense course (Thermodynamics).
For $1,000 this is the crap I get.
There are far too many contract or Adjunct's teaching as it is.
$4 Billion?! my god.
