It certainly didn't help Texas State.
Well maybe they where a little late to the ball game.

Considering UNC attendance averages around 59,000, ECU could surpass the Tar Heels in attendance.
Would this be acceptable to UNC? I think not.
Needing more buts in seats makes the SEC even more desirable.
Of course, the extra money afforded SEC membership would also be a huge plus.
ECU has averaged a respectable 43,000 and change over the last 10 years with a record setting attendance of 51,000 set when the Tar Heels came to town.
I suppose that the thought in Greenville is: if you enlarge the stadium...they will come, but at this point the capacity that they have now exceeds the demand.
Don't kid yourself citing the last 10 year average attendance of ECU when the Pirates will be playing an AAC schedule moving forward in 2016. ECU will have a better chance of selling out their stadium than the Tar Heels will.
Of course, on the above we can disagree, but the real issue is what if I'm right? Could UNC suffer being 2nd in football attendance to an instate G5 school? I say no. Disagree?
Hmmm maybe...none of the AAC teams are noted for traveling long distances for a regular season game. Navy is fairly close and that is about it. I can't see ECU fans getting that excited about most of the AAC teams. I thought the school is conducting a feasibility study to go to 60k? Has it been officially announced?
IMHO: CUSA at its peak was better than the AAC today.

As of right now, ECU isn't a viable candidate for the SEC for multiple reasons.
What about UNC then?
What about them?
They're one of maybe 5 schools that can punch their ticket anywhere based purely on their BB program.
Not for long. When the sanctions come in that ship wil sail. With those serious sanctions and without organized cheating to sustain them they will no longer be able to sustain their previous "success".

This again???
You already have a great name and brand.
Renaming isn't going to do anything for you.
You are only held back by your conference affiliation, not your name.

Answer the question. If ECU started to have higher attendance numbers than UNC would the Tar Heels stay in the ACC?

RE: Will the expansion of ECU's stadium to 60,000 force UNC to the SEC?
1. ESPN has a very advantageous contract with the ACC
2. ACC basketball is important content to ESPN
3. If UNC were to leave, other ACC schools would start looking for new homes and the conference would scatter
4. With the SEC network, ESPN has a lot of interest in what the SEC does.
Given the above, how is ESPN ever going to let UNC be "forced" to the SEC?
It seems more likely that ESPN would try and orchestrate something like NC State (or, I guess in some scenarios, ECU) to the SEC, to gain the SEC network cable money from the households in the state of NC without hurting the ACC too much.

That's an easy one. Of course they would. ECU's attendance has no more influence over what UNC does than South Carolina's does.
That being said, I don't really see how being in the AAC is going to boost ECU's attendance from its current level of about 45K. None of their opponents are likely to bring many fans, and very few of them are attractive enough to bring more ECU fans to the stadium. The composition of the AAC is pretty similar to that of CUSA when the Pirates played in that league. There aren't any real rivals there anymore.
And the sad fact is that you could give ECU the same money as the ACC gives Wake Forest and you would get the same result. More money doesn't equate to more wins. That's been demonstrated for years and years.

This is very naïve/kooky reasoning. No, the expansion of the non-P5 school's stadium is not going to drive North Carolina into another league. Very weird theory.

RE: Will the expansion of ECU's stadium to 60,000 force UNC to the SEC?
According to the Equity in Athletics database ECU generates just under $10,000,000 in revenue from football. UNC generates over $32,000,000. I don't have actual attendance numbers but I'm guessing they are similar. So UNC generates 3 times the revenue from similar attendance.
I don't know how they report these numbers but I believe part of the difference is UNC is able to charge for premium seating and services (skyboxes, etc.).
