RE: Football Class of 2019
I have some fond memories of when (a few years back) UC was rated highly for winning much better than their recruiting rankings. In retrospect, much of that was really good talent evaluation by Dantonio and staff. (Kelly benefited)
It is fun to have good recruiting rankings on signing day. I would much rather have wins.
I just hope that our staff is making good evaluations. Especially OL, WR and DB. I want to have faith in them. Get it done guys.

Dantonio put in the hardest work, but I don't like the narrative that Kelly and Jones did not recruit well. We won a lot of games with talent that BJ and BK brought into UC.

RE: Football Class of 2019
I'm happy with the class so far. It was going to be tough to replicate the class of 2018. I consider our recruiting peers in this conference to be Memphis, Houston, UCF, and USF. Those 4 schools + Cincinnati should be in the top half of the conference nearly every season. The school out of that group that should be concerned is USF. They only have a handful of commits and none of them are top 1000 guys. It's too early to call, but I would say there is a chance Charlie Strong could end up being USF's version of Tuberville.

RE: Football Class of 2019
Class size question:
I remember seeing the suggestion a few months ago that the 2019 class would be a little smaller based on the # of scholarships available. We have had several transfers in and out since then.
Do we have a feel on the # we can now expect to take in the 2019 class?
If we only have a couple of spots open, (and assume no 4/5 star guys available), what position groups will we target?

19-22, but likely closer to the latter number.
Basically this class is almost complete. It's a different sorta class than last year, in terms of both quantity and quality.

Yea the 2018 class was a perfect storm of 1) Ohio having a deep, loaded class of prospects, 2) the city of Cincinnati having a deep, loaded class, and 3) Luke Fickell coming into a situation where he needed to find players who could contribute early (Vann, Whyle, Bush, Bryant (??), Taylor).
To that end, Fickell was able to sell the ability for several highly-rated recruits on early playing time at UC, which I'm sure really helped him land those guys mentioned above, among others.
For me, the 2019 class is all about depth. Could Justin Harris come in and play immediately? Maybe, but hopefully guys like Darrick Forrest and Bush are good enough such that he can take a redshirt. Overall, the makeup of the 2019 class appears to be one where the staff wants to slap a redshirt on most of the guys, develop them slowly, and prepare them to contribute in 2020/21 (god I'm old).

Definitely agree with this. That said, this is the same model that's always been in place at UC - more, or less. This is reflected in the overall rating for this class. It's very much in line what we've historically seen at UC.

Football Class of 2019
UC picked up a commitment from DE Steven Hawthorne of de la Salle in Chicago late last night. 3* rating on 24/7. Beat out some P5 schools - also had offers from Illinois, Nebraska, Rutgers, and Syracuse.

This is a solid looking pickup right here.

For sure...one has to wonder, though, how many of these DL guys will see the field. In the '18 class we had 5 DLmen, and so far in this class we've got 4 (not counting Jones and Phillips). That's a full 2-deep in just two years...

We're gonna experience HEAVY loses along the DL following this season. The class of '18 is going to get some good run this season in preparation to those guys being front line players next season.
I'm expecting the 2019 guys to be at the bottom rung, but still get some run next season. I don't believe their as polished as the guys we got last class, however the anticipated need along the DL for next season says they're likely going to see the field.
.....plus....the new RS rule dictates that they're very likely to get a chance to show that they belong.

Phillips has to be viewed as a definite project at this point considering he's only played TE up to this point. I believe I read where Hawthorne supposedly had a dominating camp performance at UC.

Where did you read that? Hawthorne didn’t camp at UC. He took an official visit back in June but wasn’t at any of the camps...

Was Hickman at camp? That may have been the confusion, pretty similar names and types of players (at least on tape).

It shows him as a 37% for Ohio State, does this mean the powers that be on 24/7 don't think he is a take for them, and will likely choose UC. I don't really understand how that works.

That's a percentage of people who have picked him to go to OSU and UC. So he has 3 total people predicting where he will pick for college, 2 people predict UC, 1 predicts OSU.

Per 247, he doesn't have an OSU offer yet.
