South Carolina's Confederate Flag...
What do those who are from. or are living in. South Carolina think?

What do those from outside South Carolina think?

I bring this up due to the shooting in Charleston this past week. I've seen politcal cartoons such as:

and news outlets describing the US and South Carolina flags flying at half mast at the SC Capitol while the Confederate flag flew full mast:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morni...-shooting/

I want it to be clear that the tragedy that occurred was an horrific incident. I do not wish to make light of it. I present this thread only after fully acknowledging the aforementioned.

Should SC change their flag policy? Do they have the right to fly any flag they want? Should the NCAA and ACC prohibit postseason games in SC? Do they have the right? Did the NCAA not just allow South Carolina women's basketball to host in Columbia for the WNCAAT?

(And I say all this while referencing Mississippi, who actually has the confederate flag as part of their state flag, and not a separate flag like SC, as well as several other southern states who invoke Confederacy imagery in their flags.)

RE: South Carolina's Confederate Flag...
This is a political issue, not a sports one.

Although, since you asked, here are my thoughts:

The South entered into armed revolt against the duly elected government of the United States of America.

That meets the legal definition of treason in any place and at any time.

We can honor the valor of individual soldiers and armies, but that Confederate battle flag represented treason and now has been co-opted by the KKK and other racial hate groups.

Here is what the creator of that flag wrote about it in 1863:

In 1863, as the editor of the Savannah Morning News he proposed a design that would ultimately become the Confederacy's second national flag, which would be come to known as the "Stainless Banner". Referring to the flag's design as "The White Man's Flag", Thompson praised its design, as well as stating:

As a people we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause. ... As a national emblem, it is significant of our higher cause, the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization contending against ignorance, infidelity, and barbarism. Another merit in the new flag is, that it bears no resemblance to the now infamous banner of the Yankee vandals.

—William T. Thompson (1863), Daily Morning News

It has no business being flown in public places. Take that flag down.

Free speech. If people want to celebrate it, you let them. Dont agree with the KKK rallies either but I dont want a gestapo government.

Sure, the KKK is granted "free speech", but that doesn't mean they're guaranteed the right to assemble in any public locale in any manner they wish. There are restrictions. And those same restrictions would seemingly apply to your KKK/Confederate Flag parallel.

As recently as last year, Florida police officers lost their jobs after being outed as KKK members.
http://thefreethoughtproject.com/florida...k-members/

Should the right to "free speech" apply to a group of child molesters who congregate in a city center and proclaim their "beliefs" to the public in that manner?

And my initial post wasn't meant to connect South Carolina's confederate flag with the KKK. I think those are two separate issues, though it can easily be argued they're both related to issues of racism.

RE: South Carolina's Confederate Flag...
Treason and racism means the Confederate battle flag must come down from all public places, especially in Charleston after this racist, right wing, domestic terrorism massacre.

If someone wants to fly that damn thing on private property, then you can argue "free speech", but not on public property and government buildings.

Since it doesn't appear that a mod is around, and since this is really a "Spin Room" issue...

a) Do we need to create an ACCbbs verison of the Spin Room to move this thread to, or

b) Simply move this thread the site-wide Spin Room...?

No more spin rooms please, LOL.

You guys are still able to post in this thread but there's a redirect to the spin room. Nothing against the OP, but the spin room would be better suited for this subject.

Why the hell should this be off the main board? This is pertinent to ACC athletics.

I don't mind it. It's of historical significance, and I'd wager the majority of SC residents are ok with it, too. States' rights.

There are probably lots of flags of historical significance. Do they fly the Union Jack?

I don't disagree with that premise.

But, we're talking about a collection of posters who turn every ACC thread into a "division re-alignment" or "promote Cincy to the ACC" thread and can't stay on topic for 10 posts.

The confederate flag, the lightning rod issue that it is, will have this thread looking like the best of the Spin Room, and completely away from ACC sports, in no time flat.

Despite your best intentions and despite how you worded your OP.

Well, the Union Jack is a British flag, which is the flag of a foreign country... so, I guess I don't see the similarity.

RE: South Carolina's Confederate Flag...
I'm a states' rights person, so I'm not for the federal government compelling South Carolina to take it down. But I have no problem with public and corporate and NCAA pressure to take it down, because it should come down.

I believe in honoring history and what not, and I believe that the confederate flag CAN have some non-racist associations...but that flag flying above the State Capitol is 100% about segregation and racism. That flag hasn't been flying there since the end of the Civil War. That confederate flag went up in 1962 as a protest against integration, plain and simple. It is a symbol of segregation. It should come down, and should have come down a long time ago.

If I was South Carolina, I would pull it down now with a nice speech and a little contrition, to salvage SOMETHING positive.

"We've held for decades that the confederate flag honors our civil war dead of all races, and is not a symbol of racism. However, touched once again by the tragedy of hate, we take it down today, as not to give refuge to the scoundrels who would use it to portray South Carolina as a haven for the racism that belongs in the dustbin of history."

That will be better than the look of having to take it down under duress of business interests a couple months from now.

Does that change the fact that the majority of SC residents don't have a problem with it?

If the flag was put up solely as a response to desegragation then I think it should come down as it's purpose for flying doesn't, IMO, represent the real historic significance of the the flag. Anyway, it's not the official confederate flag anyway. For what it's worth, I have no issue with the flag.

The VAST majority of people who complain about it and want it brought down know next to nothing about it, other than what Facebook, MSNBC, Sharpton, Obama, and the rest of the media tells them. Sad, really.

State's rights died at Appomattox, along with any relevance for the Confederate battle flag.

I know a lot about the Civil War, the Confederacy, the generals, battles, armies, etc..of that conflict, including but not limited to the Confederate battle flag.

Tear it down from every public place.
