if that happens, we should get Jackson TN...that would move Memphis to the 39-40 range.
Jackson TN is 1 hour, or 65 miles from the edge of Memphis (wolfchase area)
Dayton OH is around that far from Cincy.
This is a proposed merger of the TV markets. The northern tip of the Cincinnati DMA is in Middletown. The southern tip of the Dayton DMA is in Springboro. That is 9.17 miles apart.
just as the Memphis DMA literally buts up to the Jackson TN DMA...this would also be a proposed merger of the TV markets...exactly the same.

C'mon man. Jackson, Tennessee to Memphis, Tennessee is almost 90 miles.

Hell if you are going to go that far; you might as well claim Nashville too, because you are halfway there.
If Memphis can claim Jackson Tennessee then Greenville, North Carolina should be able to claim Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, because the distance between Greenville and Raleigh is only 84 miles.

At least one of the criteria for inclusion in a particular DMA used to be whether or not the submarket, in this case Jackson, had a certain number of local affiliates for CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox, and if the stations it didn't have local affilitates for were in the larger DMA.
For example, if Jackson had a local CBS and ABC affilitate, and the local NBC and Fox affilitates were in Memphis, it might qualify as a part of the Memphis market. I don't know the exact number of affiliates a submarket needs to be separate, so I'm just posting this as an example

Seriously though, when factoring in urban sprawl; if Memphis is going to claim Jackson then it should claim Nashville too. And Nashville should claim Memphis. The sprawl between Nashville and Memphis probably takes a good 60 miles off of the distance between those 2 cities, which puts the actual distance at about 140 miles between the two cities; which makes Jackson the logical halfway point.

Even from Cordova; it is still nearly 70 miles to Jackson. Even with urban sprawl, if Memphis can claim Jackson then Greenville could claim Raleigh, because accounting for urban sprawl Greenville is still closer to Raleigh than Jackson is to Memphis. So if you claim Jackson in your posts for Memphis then in my posts I will claim Raleigh for Greenville.

Okay... and the edge of the Cincinnati suburb literally touches the edge of the Dayton suburbs. As I said before, apples and oranges.
If you look at a map of the Cincy/Dayton area, all the towns along and near I-75 between the two cities is now basically one big amorphous suburban area. You can drive between downtown Cincinnati and downtown Dayton and it is suburban the entire way. That was not the case as recently as 20 years ago.

Makes sense. And if true resolves the dispute. No wonder your post was, but for this exception, completely ignored.

All I know is that this is a ridiculous thread pointing out Memphis adding any more cities to its DMA. UC fans only bring up Dayton because the govt has been talking about combining the markets for over 15 years. Not because UC fans want it, truly an independent 3rd party wants it. So that makes every other comparison Apples vs Oranges.
