[IMHO, TV destroyed amateur athletics, after the NCAA allowed broadcasters to show more than one game per weekend.
The money and competition for more money and more of the money then outweighed the competition between athletes.]
[/quote]

It wasn’t the NCAA which decided to allow multiple telecasts. Oklahoma and Georgia sued to be allowed to televise all their home games and the courts agreed in 1984. The NCAA was the defendant, not the plaintiff.

See Grungy’s post. Field level is below the water table in the area. Even without a rainstorm, ground water would flood the field without constant pumping.

Same reason basements are not a thing in Houston except for buildings with pumping systems.

So do a bunch of Rice buildings have pumping systems? And how do they keep the steam tunnels water-free? My favorite steam tunnel experience was accidentally finding our way into the WRC old dorm basement when exploring...

If they are below the water table they would. HRS is 25 ft below grade and below the area water table. So somewhere between 0 and 25 ft you'd have a problem without a pumping system. Of course, when Houston gets one of its frog strangler gully washers, you have a problem even above grade.

Took a while to find this…

Inside the pump house.

Yes, there are other pumps.
Sump pump 10 is 1.5 floors below “first” floor Sewall Hall.

This is indeed good news - east side concourse restrooms appear to be getting a complete make-over.

"Before" is the north end, and "interim" is the south end (as of today (7/5/22)). "After" may be a month away, but I expect them to be similar to the improved west side concourse restrooms.

Women, east, concourse...

Or maybe, consistent with the "Rice way," they are just eliminating restrooms. Think of how much water that would save.

I honestly can't believe a renovation is happening in Rice Stadium. It's going to look nice.

Let's also hope for a renovation of the product on the field in HRS. I won't believe that one is happening until we see it.

Grungy, any pictures?

The cheapest way to accomplish that would be locking the doors, as they did with the small restrooms under the R-Room.
Saves the cost of demolition.
They’ve pulled the plumbing off the pee walls too.
Fairly confident this is renovation.

Thank you, powers-that-be.

Sorry! My comment was meant to be sarcasm aimed at the coaching staff. You’ve done a great job of keeping us up to speed on what’s going on with the stadium. I realize the product on the field is not yours to document, except for maybe the halftime product. Thank you!

I just wish we had as much good news (and pictures) covering the football program “renovation”. Heck, if we just knew thers was a “renovation”happening, that would be a step in the right direction.

The MOB should enter the stadium through the southwest gate and then onto the field from behind the home fans on the west side on the 50-yard line. I think its arrival would get much more of a reaction if it walked through the fans. The cheer squad and dance team could follow them if they want?

Remember that the band hall is just off the outside of the stadium tunnel, on the south end.
The MOB does perform at the Tailgate Owley, and wanders as far as the alumni tents and ticket booths at Gate 3.
Then we head to the tunnel to enter the stadium.

We have something of a tradition of using the tunnel as an echo-chamber to play the intro of "Toccata and Fugue in D minor".

I agree that breaking the fourth wall would be entertaining, and I have suggested that we perform in other parts of the stadium for decades.

When you say "enter the stadium", at what time do you mean?
Our entrance is usually about 40-45 minutes before game time.
There just aren't a lot of people in the stadium then.
(Anticipating the snide comments that there aren't many later, either, I'll just say that the stadium is close to deserted before pre-game.)

If you mean at halftime, an entrance from well off the field eats into the 6 minutes we are typically allotted.
These aren't the halcyon years when we had a relatively luxurious 8 minutes for a show.

They have posted images of the renovation work.
We've been seeing quite a bit from the weight room.
And there have been the stylized images of small groups and individual players.
Not sure what else they can do.
Not sure there is anything they can do that would impress many of the jaded individual members of the Parliament.
"Rice Fight Never Dies" and "Just Win" on heavy rotation are good enough for me.

Maybe declare the end of pound the rock? That would be a “renovation” of the football program most here would be truly excited about. Everything else is lipstick on the proverbial pig. Not that the pig doesn’t need a makeover, but 4-5 years in, maybe it’s time for a different, more interesting pig?

I mean before the game, instead of using the tunnel. TFD would echo just as well on the concourse. True that very few fans are there at that time. I just feel that the more engagement with the fans, the better. The 'entrance' may resonate a little better if you ask me, but I understand the tradition.

Maybe we get the team to do it instead. I think fans would really go for that, especially kids. Surprise them.

Well, since we’re speaking proverbially here, it’s like I always say.

A pound of pound the rock is worth an inch of yardage gained.

The pee walls in this one (southeast) are history.
The demolition crew doesn't know what the plans are for the replacement.
I'll guess that it will mirror the southwest side, or duplicate the northwest side.
Concrete saws on trailers are on the apron outside, waiting their turn.
They dug new drains for the renovation on the west side.
