It's clear to see he is an elite athlete for his size. Like I said, he is going to find himself playing on a team where he is easily the best player on the roster and then playing against competition where he is the best on the court. Hopefully he is humbled and gets a chance to prove himself.

Look, four star basketball players don't come to UNCW if they're on top of their game. I'll take the chance on a guy like this every time. I'd have to say the upside is far greater than the downside.

Not to mention, this sets the recruiting bar pretty high and should be enticing to other targets. Can you imagine him paired up with some deadly three point shooters and a pg like Phillips? I see alley oops ala Cacok all day long. Any chance Siddle enlists Cacok to mentor this guy?

I love this move and really hope he can get on the court this upcoming season. If Siddle lands a ready to go 5 as a grad transfer it may mean we have to wait a year. I'm good with that. It will be worth the wait....04-cheers

I sure hope, and would love for you to be right on this one.

Blind optimism. Ignoring all the red flags because someone was "something" 3 years ago and has not been in college. Obviously I'm with you CG, I hope it works out. But like some others are doing i just can't ignore the serious red flags. Maybe more red flags than any other recruit i can remember in my 20 years following.

It's not blind optimism. Literally everyone has acknowledged the flags that you are mentioning. In fact, there are flags that haven't been discussed in this thread, but I'm intentionally not mentioning them because it doesn't add value. This is Siddle's decision and harping and rehashing those concerns really adds no value.

There is nothing that indicates he's been a bad teammate at NCST or SJU. No academic or legal trouble. It's a gamble and if it doesn't work out, it's a lost scholarship. If it clicks, he's a difference maker.
I have no issue with taking the shot.... but i refuse to drink the kool aid until we see how it works out. Legit reason to be hesitant to give stamp of approval. that said. I'd argue that being out of shape, or quitting on your team are DEFINITELY being a bad teammate. Look at the crap we gave Kai for quitting

I don't know enough about either situation to draw a conclusion. The risk is two-fold and to me the bigger risk Siddle is assuming is regarding his eligibility next year. I like the pieces that are returning, but we all know that without adding post depth our potential is limited.

RE: Recruit Updates
We gave a walk on a scholarship with little upside. It's always risk/reward and that's how decisions are made. Linssen isn't exactly a model for being "in shape", and somehow he managed to play and produce. I'm not cautious at all. This is the CAA, he'll be top 10% in the conference as soon as he hits the court. I haven't seen any big men other than Cacok in the CAA with his athleticism in a long time, I don't care how bad of shape he's in. He's 20 something years old.

Anyone here think he'll be worse than Trey Kalina or Marcus Bryan? Worse shape than CJ Gettys? C'mon.

Remember when Talley was suspended? How about Wyrick suspension? Tim Burnette? Matt Fish?

Risk? Antoine Allen from Miami. Yemi Makanjuola?

Apples to oranges. All those issues were issues AFTER they became a Seahawk. Not before. We are talking about red Flags prior to coming.

Bricks- Agree with you completely, if he becomes immediately eligible, i definitely lean more towards "Worth the shot".

Phenom Hoop Report: What Jajuan Carr Means for UNC Wilmington

So with the groundwork laid for what Coach Siddle is walking into, why is Jajuan Carr such a splash commitment?

First off, Carr is a high-level guard that Siddle had to beat out other schools for, schools that could be thought of for a higher level like St Bonaventure in the A10 and East Carolina in the American Athletic. Takayo Siddle came into this position with a reputation as a high-level recruiter, especially in the state. This immediate grab plays right into this. He knew Carr from his time at NC State, so there was a familiarity. Carr was Siddle’s first offer after getting the job and within the week, Carr was in tow, casting aside the bigger names and staying home.

Secondly, Carr is a local player. The District Player of the Year by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association. This is a great move for attendance, getting the local community involved. Being a school without football, getting the local support behind the program is huge. Keeping the best players in North Carolina is big, but also keeping the local players home is important. Burgaw, North Carolina is a basketball-crazed community and their native son was the first offer and subsequently the first commitment for Coach Siddle. A+ on the PR side.

Thirdly, Carr is a Top 15 player in North Carolina’s 2020 class. He had those offers for a reason, a true paint touchpoint guard who delivers pinpoint pocket passes after making great reads. We all know that championships are won with guard play, and Carr is one of the best pure point guards in this region. Carr averaged 21 Points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals per game, leading Pender High School to a 20-8 season, the school’s first 20 win season since the 2010-11 season.

Samage Teel will make his decision tomorrow. As of right now, he holds offers from UNCW and Presbyterian.

So... did Samage Teel make a decision?

Samage Teel has posted on social media that he will be announcing his decision on Friday. Let's see if it actually happens this time...

few things, first i do agree that it's a solid get. Outside of that, the writer clearly doesn't know much about UNCW or their "level". ECU is a level above? Secondly, just because a kid is from NC doesn't mean much for our attendance, that will have very little effect.

I was reading earlier this week that Carr really wanted to stay close to home, so he was considering going to prep school for a year until he was offered by Siddle (that is with an offer in hand from ECU). Playing in front of his friends, family, and community was important to him, so it sounds like UNCW is his "dream school", which is really cool. Either that, or he really didn't like the program in Greenville.

6'5" SF Ja'Dun Michael has decommitted from Wichita State. He's a 4 star from Burlington, NC and has decided he wants to be closer to home. Looks like he originally chose Wichita State over N.C. State. Wondering what kind of relationship he may have with Siddle.

A lot of people think he’s going to join that freshman class going to Raleigh. If not, I can’t see him ending up at a mid major. On another note, Samage Teel will be announcing at 2 pm tomorrow.

I knew Capel was in the mix, but Ja'Dun says with experiencing this COVID-19 he wanted to be close to home.

Each situation is different, but I imagine a lot of athletes will want to be closer to home with all that is going on. Maybe it helps us with Harvey or Mason.

RE: Recruit Updates
One thing seems certain. If we add another commit at the guard spot before we have a bit commit, we will be taking a scholarship from a current player. Siddle has got to have a big man come in that can play immediately, so he will have to have a scholarship available for an immediate eligibility transfer of that big.

There has always been a LOT of talent in Eastern North Carolina. If we could get just that talent pool to want to be within a reasonable driving distance of their homes and come play at UNCW, there almost literally wouldn't be a need to go anywhere else to recruit.

Just think of the guys in our backyard who got away over the years....

Have to remember what it was like to be that age. Very rare any kid wants to "go to college" near where they live. The whole point is to get away from your parents!

But we also have benefited from locals.
Garry Cooper, Danny Davis, Tim Shaw & Brian Rowsom to name just a few. There could be more - that is for certain.

Samage Teel commits to Winston-Salem State... Quite shocking but my guess is his offer wasn't there after Carr committed.

More evidence that kids are going to want to stay close to home. At least for the time being.
