I can see us going after Turner, Towns, etc. from this list...

I wonder if Kyle Hayes is still a target?

According to the rankings I use, I'm not sure he is a "Plan A" MAC recruit.

BTW, I wanted to get off on a tangent of sorts.

When looking at h.s. kids, the staff has to compare what we've gotten locally from h.s. MI ranks vs. what we've gotten elsewhere AND JUCOs.

Murphy and staff have done very well with JUCOs (including KWard and Naz and our three JUCOs this year) and high school kids else where (e.g., Bond and JT4) and transfers.

I'd judge the recruiting weakness as being local kids, except Lee.

My take: If transfers work. If JUCOs work. If H.S. kids from all over work...

Don't stop doing what works...

Is it still true that he have a verbal from Epps (2017) - SG from Wayne Memorial? I saw him ranked in the top 25 in his MI (junior) class.

River Rouge (Stone's school) has a good PG, Owens-White, who is also a 2017 player. I've seen him ranked in the top 15 in his MI (junior) class.

Come March 2017 we lose a lot of our back court (Lee, Mangum, Toney) but are expected to be very strong up front with JT4, LWH, Bond, Madray, Noble, Jones, etc.

Based on that, I'd go with a h.s. backcourt player this April (e.g., Justin Turner - combo from Detroit) and couple more in April 2017.
I talked to the Canton coach and he told me just a few days ago that he was verbally committed still.

I'm surprised we are not talking more about him, Epps?

We pull names out of a hat as possible recruiting targets and ignore a verbal.

Epps with 9 points 8 boards in loss to Canton last night. Murphy was at the game watching him and hanging out with Benny White. Whose kid is on Canton.

Steve Bell says this 2017 PF has improved his junior year maybe one worth watching:

I would be surprised. Do we need another Jordan Nobles?

We could use another SF as next year Price will be a senior. Maybe.

The staff needs to start thinking who the PG of 2017-18 will be. Someone on the roster or TBD?

I'm not worried about the front court (other than a bit at SF): JT4, LWH, Madray, Bond, Nobles, etc. have two or more years AFTER this current season. That's great. Lot of talent which will be around for a while.

I know NOTHING of what the staff is doing, but Turner of Detroit Renaissance would be among my top choices. A very talented combo guard.

Yes, we can't keep losing or the very good recruits won't believe in the direction of the program. Thompson fell into our laps and we were not heavily Recruiting him. Murphy needs to be a consistent winner to attract local talent. His conference record indicates mediocrity at best........

A little O/T for this thread (but not others from the past), but Lacey James has left Rider.

This shows how dicey recruiting high school players can be. Lot of folks thought he had a lot of potential at the mid-major level and he has apparently 'washed out' already... (unless there is something we don't know...).

BTW, for those following Verbalcommits.com, Jalen Martin has committed to Iowa State for football. They can scratch him as a basketball recruit.

Jalen is Jordan's brother...

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
This is my #1 recruiting target in MI:

"Detroit Renaissance’s combo guard Justin Turner is averaging 20 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals provides the engine for the PSL-West’s top team. He is just shy of 1,250 points and a strong finish to his career puts him in premier company. He is uncommitted, but holds offers from Horizon, MAC, and Conference USA teams. The Phoenix’ playoff battle has the University of Detroit-Jesuit in an annual battle. A PSL Championship prior to voting will help his cause.

Renaissance’s head coach Vito Jordan compliments Turner, “He’s extremely versatile. He can defend, rebounds really well, passes really well, can score, can shoot, attacks the basket. He not the best at one thing, but I don’t think there’s another guard in the state who does all those things together better than he does. (He’s) extremely coachable and has a great attitude.”

RE: 2016/17/18 Men's Basketball Recruiting
This is NOT a new recruit, but Quaran Jones, a transfer from Findlay, A D-II school in the same conference (GLIAC) as Wayne State, Ferris State, Grand Valley, etc.

He played what appears to be 1.5 seasons at Findlay. Took a redshirt and sitting out this season as a transfer.

Jones is listed at 6' 6" 225 and can play C / PF. Who knows how much he has improved (or will improve next year) as he is relatively inexperienced as a college player.

I'm trying to think of which recent EMU player who was his size and played inside (short, muscular center/PF). My brain is coming up empty... (EDIT: Hughley, Hunter???). O/T: but my favorite player who was similar in size was Kareem Carpenter. Kareem was a little short for a PF, but he was stocky and a real bull in the china shop. Think he might hold an EMU record for rebound (one game?).

Anthony Strickland? Mo is probably who you're thinking of though.

I thought of (but didn't post him by name) Strickland. Similar size and, of course, both transferred up from D-II.

Murphy tries to steal another Strickland.

He sounds like depth. A good guy to have on the team but not a difference maker. Is he on scholarship or is he a walk?

EMU needs a shooter.

He is a walk-on. I don't know if he has a realistic chance to earn a scholarship next season if someone leaves the program and another scholarship opens up.
