Like a lot of people we've been doing Zoom meetings this past year. I noticed that when I see myself on Zoom it's the mirror image. If you hold up your right hand you will see it on the right side of your screen, but it would be on your left in a normal image. Then I wondered how other people see me. So I set up 2 tablets side by side and started a Zoom meeting. Sure enough, my tablet was mirror image, but the second tablet was normal image.
Then I noticed the same thing with the backup camera on our car. The display shows the mirror image, because you are looking at a rear view but turned around forward. If the normal view were displayed, objects on the screen (cars, poles, etc.) would appear on the opposite side of the vehicle. So the mirror image display is necessary to give you a spatial sense of objects around the car. Kind of like a rearview mirror. Weird, huh?
The same is true if you take a selfie (I hate selfies so maybe that's why it took me this many years to notice!). Look at your phone and hold up your right hand, and you will see your raised hand on your right (not the images right). Then snap a shot. When you look at the saved image it will have reversed to normal view and appear on your left (your actual left, not the images left).
