ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY..THANK YOU!! Walton played almost the entire second half with 4 fouls. To my recollection Kenon stopped getting the ball so much in the post in the second half which could have led to a foul on Walton. I don't know if that was a Bartow call or UCLA's defense just got that much better. Chalmers should never have taken that shot as the Kansas guard was fouled before he got the ball to Chalmers per Calipari's orders. They just didn't want to get an intentional foul called so it had to not be so obvious. But to answer the question, Chalmers shot, because the Tigers were the better team that day.
Rose bumped the Kansas guard all the way down the court and actually knocked him down as he passed the ball to Chalmers.
You're exactly right Tiger46.

Walton did foul out; the refs just didn't know it.

Dan o I had no idea you were "Of that age and time".
Yep.
Class of 1967, Memphis State University
Older, but still very feisty
Age is just a number!
You have me beat by probably 2 years in age. I was originally Class of 1969, but with a change in major and transfer in to Memphis State in 1968 extending me beyond 4 years of college, and me having a low draft number that prompted me to enlist for 4 years in the Navy, my eventual graduation was extended to Class of 1975.
Aha---a squid! lol
Due to world events when I graduated in '67, I was pretty gung ho and volunteered as a jarhead soon after that.
But, such was the way of the world for lots of us guys in those days.
It sure sucked a few years after returning home to see Walton handed the "gift of a win over the Tigers.
Fixed, I tell ya.
I wasn't that gung ho. I just had a low draft number, exceeded my 4-year exemption for college, and did 4 years in the Navy to avoid getting shot at in the Army or Marines. I had 2 childhood friends, including one I was very close to, die in Viet Nam.
My matriculation delay meant I was still a student when we got robbed in 1973.

Navy was a great choice; I wish my cousin had picked Navy instead of Army.
I hope he survived the experience. And looking back on it, I'm glad I joined the Navy, too. Four years active duty, instead of two, doesn't seem like a big deal now.

He did not, sadly. Top running back in the City of Memphis, top track star, desperately wanted to play for the Tigers but Spook Murphy ran him off. Set all kinds of records at Catholic High. Had Spook let him play he would not have gone to Vietnam.

Well, I Hate to tell you, I got ya beat there! Grad. 1961 BBA and went to USAF (SAC) base outside Spokane, WA, where I ran upon some overzealous SEC troops that made a bet that they thought they had in the bag. I bet them that the 1963 football Tigers would not LOSE a game to any school in Mississippi that season. We started with the 0-0 tie with Ole Miss, then beat Mississippi State, and finally beat Southern Miss . One airman was for Alabama, another for LSU and the third was for Ole Miss. The bet was for a case of beer ea. for these three dudes. THEY LOST. We had a beer sharing party for about 18 members of a squadron football team, which won the base flag ball competition two years in a row coached by yours truly. It was a fun time. Right in the middle of the Cuban Missile crisis too.

The Chalmers Shot. Prior to that, the Kansas player was clearly out of bounds with Hightower looking right at the guys foot as it was HALFWAY over the stripe. Never should have come to the shot.

A retired Maj Gen of the USMC is a real good friend of mine. He went to MSU with me. On the other side of the country in WA state, a close family friend grew up in Richland, WA and knows general James "MAD Dog" Mattis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Mattis A nephew here is going to join 14-Feb-14. Another good friend in VA served in the USMC. Has "Semper Fi" as his motto. They are still "The Proud, The Few, The Marines". God bless them all.
At one time, Memphis State had one of the largest ROTC programs in the nation. Fraternal organization I belong to has six flag officers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_Officer around my class.
Funny how all this comes together.
We are all highly concerned about the state of this nation today.

Those were great years.
I lost a next door neighbor in Viet Nam and another neighbor made it back it good shape. They went in together Oorah!!!
I was trying to get into the Air Force to follow in my Dad's steps when I got a high draft number, and decided to stay in ROTC.

Coming down the home stretch, a fellow Tiger fan reached over and tapped me on the shoulder and said "your son is going to remember this his entire life. Our first national championship". I will remember both moments (the Chalmers shot and the shoulder tap) for the rest of my life.
The tap of death.
