It is true that B'ham has the oldest ACTIVE baseball park in America - it is about a decade older than Fenway Park in Boston. In Vulcan, it has the world's largest cast iron statue - built for the St Louis World's Fair in 1904 to advertise B'ham's iron & steel industries. In Legion Field, it just has an old but somewhat historic site where games of national importance were once played, but that was decades ago and the stadium has not aged well.

If the whole metro area could agree to put up the financing, the MPF would be an economic boost to an otherwise moribund year-round tourist economy. If B'ham could afford to do it alone, it would already have been built. Even Atlanta can't do that by itself.
