A reminder of how good a MC Lauryn Hill was/is.
Never the biggest fan of the entire The Score album even though I could come up with about 4-5 tracks I really liked. It was always amazing how many fans came out the woodwork when this one broke yet no one gave them the time of day on the prior Blunted on Reality.

Really cool to see a live video of this song, one of my favs from back in the day. Although time hasn't done any favours to Dolby's voice, the sounds and musicianship is amazingly spot-on. The on-site description under the video on YOUTUBE contains a surprising depth of information of all the different things the individual players are doing to create the sounds. Worth a look to read it if you're into that sort of thing.
The inspiration for the song was Dolby's late uncle, who died as a submarine crewman during World War II. The submarine that his uncle served on sank due to an accident during routine manoeuvres, not combat, which according to Dolby instilled a sense of futility in his death.
Although this may be Dolby's recollection of the family story, in fact the vessel, HMS P48 (1942), was lost in action in the Mediterranean on Christmas Day, 1942.
Thomas Dolby (born Thomas Morgan Robertson; 14 October 1958) is an English musician and producer best known for his 1982 hit "She Blinded Me with Science" and 1984 single "Hyperactive!". He has also worked extensively in production and as a session musician, as a technology entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, and as the Music Director for the TED Conference. He is currently a Professor of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University.
