University names

The obvious ones are Buffalo becoming New York State and LaLa being branded as Louisiana. Those two changes would big huge for their programs going forward. UTEP and UAB has gone by that for so long going by El Paso or Birmingham would just be confusing. Would UTSA think about going by San Antonio since they are new to the football game?

I think there's a certain "bump" that comes from having a four letter acronym - UCLA, UNLV, and UTEP haven't been hurt by their branding. Just going to "San Antonio" for athletics may hurt them because of the city's checkered history with professional football (WLAF, CFL, etc.). There's also an NBA team to contend with, and lastly, a school in Alabama that's been known as "USA" for 50 years and just happened to move to FBS about the same time the Roadrunners did.

I think UTSA could have a pretty high ceiling if they do well on the field, much like South Florida did in the old Big East.

Some directional names picked up the city instead .

For the schools without the option of U of state name or state name State what is the best option ?

Also Tech is not an option

State name A&M

UNC has been itching to get rid of "At Chapel Hill" since it was slapped on them in the 1931 merger with NC A&M College (NC State) and NC Women's College (UNC-Greensboro).

A few years ago there was a movement to convert all 17 campuses to the "UNC-(city)" standard. I think every school in the system balked at the concept.

cant, there is a FL Tech now

There is an FIT. FTU is still available. Let ESPN and the lay public call us what they want. In 5 years, FTU will be "Florida Tech".
Southern Florida Tech U, or STFU, wouldn't be bad either. 05-stirthepot

Can pair with Sam Houston Institute of Technology, if they ever move up.

They're waiting for the University of North Texas to become a private Christian school and pair up with them.

"Buffalo has been making a big marketing push as New York's team - look at their uniforms, football turf, and advertisements, you'll see State University of New York at Buffalo. everywhere."

There's a good reason for that, as The State University of New York at Buffalo IS the formal name of the university. It is normally shortened to the University AT Buffalo.

It was a few decades ago and it was a big defeat for Bill Friday.

It was originally intended to be, as the South Florida region was the largest population center without a pubic university when this was going down in the 1950s. The school was legislated into existence and appropriated for, but the University of Miami, only about 25 years young at the time, lobbied Tallahassee to prevent competition from coming in, and the campus was relocated across the Alley, name intact. Miami only delayed the inevitable for about a decade, as FIU was later established in the city, but it was originally that was supposed to be USF.

This is correct. Of course, both Tampa and Miami should have had public schools by that point, but all of the political power was in the northern part of the state. The rest of the state was only going to get one state university at that time, and for multiple reasons Tampa was chosen.

Culturally, the northern part of the state (Ocala and areas north) is considered Deep South, while everything south of Ocala is a melting pot that represents what most people think of when they think of Florida. So when viewing the state from a cultural perspective, the University of South Florida isn't a terrible name. That said, I would be supportive of a name change to the Tampa Bay University. I think that name would better represent the population we serve.

If East Carolina was going to change their name to become more 'marketable', I would suggest following a precedent of other state schools like Rutgers, Clemson, Auburn, and Purdue- namely, to name the school after a person. So, ECU would become Jarvis University.

Trenton State College, a teacher's college in Ewing, NJ, became "The College of New Jersey" years ago. I think the name change enhanced the appeal and prestige of the school. It also gives one the impression that it's the state university and that it's been around for a very, very long time.

Careful there partner. While I agree with you, some people down in Lafayette, Louisiana would take serious exception to that.

Yes, in a roundabout way. It was named after John "Auburn" Toomer, who founded the town. He founded the town as a respite from all the people wearing houndstooth caps and claiming 50 national championships in buggy racing back in the 1850's. Apparently it was insufferable for Mr. Toomer. Of course that was before the Methodist Church founded the East Alabama School for Males, which begat Alabama Polytechnic, which begat Auburn University.

No.

You are absolutely correct. Virginia did it right.
