First of all, all global currencies are not pegged to the US dollar. Only around 17 out of around 182 currencies are pegged to the dollar last time I checked. Also, just because we have the capability to dictate some terms does not mean we should. Quite the opposite. Further, what happens when the US dollar is no longer the reserve currency? Are we just screwed then or do we start acting like big boys and do something about the debt now?
As long as we are the world's leading Superpower, we will hold the reserve currency. When we stop being that, then we have bigger problems than the debt.
Keep borrowing more money. Remember, we are the good guys in the world's best defense. We create the security for the free market to work. Most of our debt comes from that. We should be sending everyone a bill.
Our economy allows us hold the reserve currency. If the economy continues in the clinker more nations will start to look elsewhere, like China, for a reserve currency. Granted, that may be a long way off but nations are actively discussing and contemplating such a move. That wasn't the case even a decade ago. Things our govt does now will have a direct impact on many things in the future, namely our status as a reserve currency holder. Do you think other nations will continually have faith in the dollar given what seems like annual debt limit confrontations, etc?
Then why do the tea baggers want the economy to crash?

Our govt's current inability to compromise on anything, but mainly the debt/spending issue, may eventually lead to a default. If that happens credit derivatives (look it up) will explode and set off repercusions in world wide financial markets. This, on top of the recent financial crises, will continue to diminish the world's peception of the US as reserve currency bearer. The currecny will just be too volatile to be considered stable. I don't agree with some of tea party issues, but the need to control our debt is one I do agree with. The tea baggers, allbeit in a confrontational manner, want exactly the opposide of what you postulated above.

No, I stand with doing something about the debt, which is the only sensible thing to do if the US wants to contain it's stature as a reserve currency bearer.

RE: Obama Forgets How Math Works
If the Debt Ceiling is not raised, America will suffer. We have already spent the money the debt ceiling needs to be raised to cover. We fail to increase it, then the U.S.'s credit rating takes another hit and the value of the dollar continues to drop. The value of the dollar drops and our economy suffers even more.
I'm not sure why this is such a difficult concept.

The military has an impact, but I would suggest our economy allows us to prevent military confrontation more at this point in our history than ever before. Not talking about rouge nations like Iraq, Iran, etc. Talking more about potential military conflicts with the likes of China, Russia, etc. There is more to lose economically by those large countries, due to their reliance on the US economoy, than there is to gain via any military strike. That is reason enough to keep the US economy strong. Our govt constantly deadlocked over the debt situation is not good for the economy.

Obama will have to increase the debt ceiling himself and I believe that is what Boehner's end game plan is. It's the least unconstitutional thing Obama can do to pay off the debt. He could also sell federal property or raises taxes, but that won't happen. Raise da roof.

I've read where there are billions worth of unused or underused govt buildings that could be sold. Problem is, some law prevents the govt from doing just that. Selling those buildings would be a good start.

I'm really sick of this belief from the Right that Taxes are the devil. Taxes serve a very useful purpose. The Netherlands pay high taxes, but guess what? Free healthcare. Free college/university. Rock bottom homeless rates.
It's ridiculous.

So you stand with the tea party in destroying our and the world economy. Thanks for clarifying(though I already knew that is where you stood).
No, I stand with doing something about the debt, which is the only sensible thing to do if the US wants to contain it's stature as a reserve currency bearer.
So crashing the world economy is the best way to accomplish this?
Ok, I see your agenda and there's no getting through to you. I've only scratched the suface of the economic/financial ramifications a debt default would instigate, espeically with regard to our reserve currency. It will be useless for me to dive into a higher level economic and financial discussion with you as you clearly intend to keep spouting this particular talking point.

Our govt's current inability to compromise on anything, but mainly the debt/spending issue, may eventually lead to a default. So, when does the piling up of debt end?
As soon as we start taking in more than we are spending?
Robert, how big an increase in taxes are you willing to personally send to Washington?

When we have tax rates that are actually appropriate for the various economic classes.

Right. Even if that were to increase revenue which it wouldn't, you would still have politicians finding new ways to spend it. Balanced Budget Amendment to constitution would be the only way to ensure we spend no more than we take in.
