RE: Birdsong out
JMU was adapting the offense to cater to the strengths of Birdsong. If it looks like he will be out at least the first game, I'm afraid the offense may shift back to a more run heavy, shotgun spread offense.

And there goes any semblance of an expanded offense. Like a scared turtle going back in his shell, our hoped for innovative offense sneaks back into its comfort zone. What really bugs me is that no matter how effective any of the backups might be during practice, Mickey won't let them throw against Akron. It'll be just like the Duke game.
Hope Birdsong has a speedy recovery.

Isn't LT still hurt? Big, big mistake to not have a solid #2 QB, even if it meant a transfer. I'm not a big fan of taking a risk with another freshman QB.
Mickey's job is on the line this year. Hard to believe he didn't plan for some kind of backup plan. Ultimately if this comes back to bite us, Matthews will be gone.

RE: Birdsong out
DNR just had an article about Thourogood today, talked about how no one knows where he will be at, either as back-up QB or the second RB behind DQ. Stoss made it sound like he was going to be a utility player. So if he moves into QB, how much do we weaken at RB? We need DQ to stay healthy.

On the bright side, better now than later! No way he is out 5 weeks. Our depth (or lack thereof) at QB is quite a concern!

The article about him in the DNR today made it sound like he would be ready to play. Is he 100%? It was hard to tell by the artcile, this is what it said:
“I’m getting better, better than I was last year. I can put it like that,” said Thourogood, a 6-foot-2, 228-pound redshirt sophomore and former three-star recruit. “I can run full speed and everything better than I did last year...
JMU coach Mickey Matthews said Thourogood will work at quarterback and running back, the position he played during spring practice just to get him reps somewhere after he hurt his throwing shoulder...
Thourogood said he did very little quarterback-specific work in the offseason because it was only in the last week and a half that he learned he would be working at quarterback. Now, Thourogood said, he views himself as a utility guy. He also said he doesn’t need to be the No. 2 quarterback — even though he is the most logical choice — for JMU to be successful."

Nothing major here.. he'll be back in time. As long as he didn't wait till the last minute to get the surgery done he should be fine in a couple weeks.

RE: Birdsong out
Just found this. Hope Birdsong's recovery is just as quick:
Quote:Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel could miss two weeks after undergoing an appendectomy.
Coach Will Muschamp said in a release issued by the university that his starting quarterback had acute appendicitis.
"Fortunately the medical staff caught it very quickly," Muschamp said. "His surgery went well and how long he is out will be determined by how his body responds, which could be two weeks."
Driskel competed for the starting job last season but Jacoby Brissett opted to transfer.
Entering his second season in offensive coordinator Brent Pease's system, Driskel earned a leadership role and high expectations from Muschamp.
"It's his football team," Muschamp said.

RE: Birdsong out
As others have said, we were probably going to come out of the first two weeks 1-1 anyway, so I'm not sure if this is as crippling as it seems on face value alone.

With MB at the helm, I thought we would have a good shot against Akron. Hopefully one of the backups steps up and seizes the opportunity.

Go Dukes
I refuse to believe that we were a likely loser to one of the 3 worst teams in all of FBS. I wouldn't say a definite winner either, just that it's probably a toss up. However, if we are forced to go w/ a one dimensional offense ( even more than we're used to), I don't see any way we could beat any FBS team.

As said. A. Of course B. you GOT to the effing kidding me. AND C. Better now than in 4 weeks or something, or not getting to it quickly.
We should be fine, but let's not rush him back either. Make sure he's 100% before he starts getting hit.

I did not expect to lose to Akron with Birdsong under center.

Stoss: It's still unclear how well Lafonte throws it.
Oh boy. On the plus side, Birdsong was quoted in the DNR today as saying that Lafonte has "a rocket for an arm."

Yes it sucks , but is birdsong that proven anyway? I think will will be ok, with bridsong we really didn't have experience anyway . So all of these guys to reps to see who can step up and be the backup.

RE: Birdsong out
Scratching my head thinking MM is going into a season with a QB who has 2 starts and was/is moving the back up to RB, in a year in which he might be coaching for his job. How is it possible that there isn't a clear #2?
