i still wonder why the shc and lbc get to use the stadium improvements being paid for by the university gratis? the stadium lease is up after this year i think - could be interesting times ahead.

What stadium improvements did we (the university) pay for?

I think FedEx actually paid for the scoreboard, didn't they? If so, maybe they said so.

If'n a new 60,000 seat stadium were built in Desoto County, the Liberty Bowl powers that be would break their necks moving down here. That's why the best long term solution for the Tigers is an on-campus stadium. Let the city & the Liberty Bowl pay for keeping that old concrete pit up. YMMV!

I agree with the goal to have an on-campus stadium 100% and also agree if the bowl game chooses to walk away from our university's conference, there's no reason for Tiger fans to support the game.

However, many folks look at the Liberty Bowl stadium and Liberty Bowl game as the same entity. One just happens to play in a stadium with the same name. The bowl game choosing to align with another conference and the fact that they ignored us many times when we were eligible shouldn't have a positive or negative affect on our feelings about the stadium itself.

if they have the sec-big xii matchup they wont give a ratzazz whether or not tiger fans come.

fish on b....

while he does usually fish, on this one, he is correct.

What about the renovations the University paid for....guess that don't give a rats ass about that either. F earhart

When is Desoto building a 60K stadium? The city would be better off in that case building a 55k as part of a new convention center.

Unless Desoto is planning on building a 1 mill ft center and is aiming its commerce building eyes on the Vegas, Orlando, New Orleans convention biz. In that case it may be better off in Tunica, unless Tunica changes course and promotes more cooperation (unlike their American Queen myopia) where high speed transport options are made available between Memphis and Tunica, making Desoto a middle point?

This region does not need another standalone stadium that's in the middle of oceans of asphalt without a connection to anything else but the car culture. At least the Liberty Bowl as it is now is connected to Cooper Young. Maybe Central to Cooper can develop more bars and restaurants too.

Memphis fans:

Are you all doing anything about this decision. Are your boosters and athletic dept personnel letting Ehrhart know this is an uacceptable decision. Are city leaders backing the UofM. Are they letting the Liberty Bowl folks know about it. Is FedEx stepping in to back Memphis. What is going on, on the ground. Thanks.

We realize that the "American" is basically a temporary thing and we are wooing the Big XII much like we wooed the LB to invite Cincy so we could get into the Big East. At least that's what I hope we are doing.

I think FedEx actually paid for the scoreboard, didn't they? If so, maybe they said so.

Quote:The University of Memphis and FedEx will help fund $9 million in improvements to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, according to a plan approved Tuesday by the City Council.

Under the plan, the city will apply to the state for Tourist Development Zone status for the Fairgrounds area, allowing tax revenues to be spent to pay off the bonds that will fund the improvements. Officials didn’t seem overly concerned that receiving TDZ status from the state would be difficult, but the UofM is offering a $500,000 annual guarantee over 15 years in case there is a snag and FedEx plans to cover the costs for a $2.5 million video board.

Quote:The University of Memphis’ status as a Big East team means more televised games and an increase in TV contract money. The University has committed to using $500,000 of this revenue each year for 15 years to pay for improvements to the stadium

well, we do use it 7 out of the 9 times it is used during the year. That number should be reduced to $389k and let the other two games fill the difference.

This and I also have to wonder if FedEx (Fred Smith and company) would have used their influence to get the city pony up 17 million to build Tiger Lane --- or his influence to get FedEx to build our two jumbotrons.

I do think too many fans are playing Don Quixote concocting imaginary demons to fight. SEC vs Big 12 will draw more than any AAC matchup that doesn't invove us. And draw more out of towners than any AAC matchup including us. I wish I had more faith that, except for a few schools, the AAC does not seem like it will travel. Hopefully visitors experience a great time with the emerging Midtown entertainment loop and everything downtown has to offer. Maybe soon Highland will emerge as well as a legitimate entertainment thoroughfare. And then the univ can be an even bigger part of drawing and benefitting from visitors beyond alums and direct opponents.
